HEART OF SERVICE

“A prophet is without honor except in his native place and in his own house.” – Matthew 13:57

I grew up serving the church as a choir singer. I am used to committed service that it is not a task for me anymore. I’ve embraced humility and consider it a real beautiful thing to assume, especially since I’ve always believed that my accountability is to God and not to any human. However, it’s remarkable to note that in more than half the time I served for the parishes and communities I once belonged to, it’s usually the human expectations that are used as a yardstick. And it has resulted to my feeling of being unappreciated and less needed. So usually, I do the inevitable — leave and serve somewhere else, where I may be of use.
This is disheartening for me, and probably to many others who share the same heart to serve, but the important thing is not to give up. Never lose the passion and drive. Just as Jesus did, I think it’s pertinent that we continue the journey and search for the proper venue to serve. It’s not going to be a walk in the park, but that’s what I strive to do myself. Eugene Cailao (eugenecailao@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
How many times have I let go of a chance to serve just because others doubted my intention and sincerity?

Lord God, walk with me and nurture this heart of service that I have; that I may not lose sight of every opportunity where I may be of service, even when I am persecuted and discouraged; so Your kingdom may be glorified through me.

TO EMBRACE change OR NOT

We live in a world of rapid change. Sometimes change is for the good; other times it is not. Sometimes we should embrace change; other times we should stick with what we know. The real dilemma is discerning when to accept change and when to reject it. We need to look to the wisdom of the Holy Spirit as well as the tried and tested wisdom of the Church to help us here. Yes, the Church has made mistakes and rejected change when it should have embraced it, but it has not done that bad a job over the years as it is still around after 2,000 years. There are no existing monarchies or dynasties that lived longer than the Church today.
Jesus tells us that the wise person knows when to embrace change and when to retain a particular aspect of our lifestyle. Generally speaking, human beings resist change as we prefer the things we know rather than those with which we are unfamiliar. It is up to those desiring change to justify that what they are proposing will not damage society. It is up to the elder statesmen and women entrusted with preserving and conserving the good in society to listen with an open mind and be willing to dialogue until an agreement is reached.
Those entrusted with conserving truth or traditions have an important task, but any student of history quickly discovers that one generation does not have a mortgage on truth when it comes to life or faith. God knows this and so raises up saints in every age to witness to the essence of faith so that we may be guided well in our choices. Both those desiring change and those with the power to reject or accept it must ensure that they achieve their ends with due respect for the other. No one gains much when intolerance rules the day.Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
Do I tend to be a supporter of change or someone who likes to maintain the status quo? Is the position I take one of expediency or truly in the quest for truth?

Jesus, You constantly challenged the religious understandings and interpretations of Your day, not just for the sake of challenging it, but in the search or revelation of the truth. Help me to seek the truth in all that I do.

St. Rufinus, pray for us.
