MY HANGNAIL

There was a woman afflicted with hemorrhages for twelve years. – Mark 5:25

When I was a teen, I had a lingering hangnail in my right big toe. It lasted for two years. The hangnail kept re-growing, puncturing my wound again and again. The wound got infected.
One day, my mother scared me to death and said that if the wound doesn’t get well, we might have to cut off my toe. So I asked a doctor to pull out my entire toenail. I still remember the day very well. How could I forget the big metal pliers? But it worked. My wound became free to heal by itself. What lasted for two years took only a few days to heal.
Friend, the hurt in your heart is as real as a wound in your body. Your anger, if it stays too long, becomes  bitterness. It infects the wound. Soon, your inner wound becomes deeper. If the wound continues, it will end up amputating a part of you, little by little, until it kills you.
God invented the greatest cleansing ointment in the world — forgiveness. He uses it all the time. He never hangs on to old hurts. Once you forgive, your wound starts to heal. Forgiveness doesn’t heal the wound instantly. You’ll still feel the pain, but it lessens over time. Bo Sanchez (bosanchez@kerygmafamily.com)

REFLECTION:
Are you nurturing a hurt in your heart? Why not let it go now and start the process of healing?

Lord, it isn’t easy to forgive. Please grant me the grace to let go of my hurts and to forgive the people who have wronged me.

1st READING

Here we are encouraged to persevere in our faith until the end. It seems that the author of this Letter believes that death in resisting sin is better than giving in to sin no matter what type of sin we are considering. Herein lies a truth that is very important for us to grasp fully – nothing is more important in the face of temptation than denying it! There is no real excuse for sin, ever. We must seek to put it to death completely.

Hebrews 12:1-4
1 Brothers and sisters: Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us rid ourselves of every burden and sin that clings to us and persevere in running the race that lies before us 2 while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the leader and perfecter of faith. For the sake of the joy that lay before him he endured the cross, despising its shame, and has taken his seat at the right of the throne of God. 3 Consider how he endured such opposition from sinners, in order that you may not grow weary and lose heart. 4 In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding blood.

P S A L M

Psalm 22:26-27, 28, 30, 31-32
R: They will praise you, Lord, who long for you.
25 [26] I will fulfill my vows before those who fear him. 26 [27] The lowly shall eat their fill; they who seek the LORD shall praise him: “May your hearts be ever merry!” (R) 27 [28] All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the LORD; all the families of the nations shall bow down before him. 29 [30] To him alone shall bow down all who sleep in the earth; before him shall bend all who go down into the dust. (R) And to him my soul shall live; 30 [31] my descendants shall serve him. Let the coming generation be told of the LORD 31 [32] that they may proclaim to a people yet to be born the justice he has shown. (R)

G O S P E L

Jesus is not concerned about the limits people seem to think He has. He knows that as His will is united with His Father’s will, that whatever He asks His Father will be given to Him when it comes to healing the sick or even raising the dead! Did He heal the girl or raise her from the dead? It does not really matter; all that matters is that she is alive! It is important that we focus on the truth that Jesus both heals and raises people from death (there is no doubt of this in the case of Lazarus [John 11]), and that we align our lives with His will so that we will work with His power and not against it.

ALLELUIA
R: Alleluia, alleluia
Christ took away our infirmities and bore our diseases.
R: Alleluia, alleluia

Mark 5:21-43
21 When Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around him, and he stayed close to the sea. 22 One of the synagogue officials, named Jairus, came forward. Seeing him he fell at his feet 23 and pleaded earnestly with him, saying, “My daughter is at the point of death. Please, come lay your hands on her that she may get well and live.” 24 He went off with him, and a large crowd followed him and pressed upon him. 25 There was a woman afflicted with hemorrhages for twelve years. 26 She had suffered greatly at the hands of many doctors and had spent all that she had. Yet she was not helped but only grew worse. 27 She had heard about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak. 28 She said, “If I but touch his clothes, I shall be cured.” 29 Immediately her flow of blood dried up. She felt in her body that she was healed of her affliction. 30 Jesus, aware at once that power had gone out from him, turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who has touched my clothes?” 31 But his disciples said to him, “You see how the crowd is pressing upon you, and yet you ask, ‘Who touched me?’ ” 32 And he looked around to see who had done it. 33 The woman, realizing what had happened to her, approached in fear and trembling. She fell down before Jesus and told him the whole truth. 34 He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has saved you. Go in peace and be cured of your affliction.” 35 While he was still speaking, people from the synagogue official’s house arrived and said, “Your daughter has died; why trouble the teacher any longer?” 36 Disregarding the message that was reported, Jesus said to the synagogue official, “Do not be afraid; just have faith.” 37 He did not allow anyone to accompany him inside except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James. 38 When they arrived at the house of the synagogue official, he caught sight of a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. 39 So he went in and said to them, “Why this commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but asleep.” 40 And they ridiculed him. Then he put them all out. He took along the child’s father and mother and those who were with him and entered the room where the child was. 41 He took the child by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise!” 42 The girl, a child of twelve, arose immediately and walked around. [At that] they were utterly astounded. 43 He gave strict orders that no one should know this and said that she should be given something to eat.

THE MYSTERY OF JESUS: RELATIONSHIPS
The twin stories we have in the Gospel today give us a glimpse into the mystery of Jesus.
A crowd follows Jesus on His way back to Galilee. Jairus, a synagogue official, approaches Jesus to plead Him to heal his critically ill 12-yearold daughter. Jesus says nothing to him; the Lord simply goes with him quietly. That is enough.
But their steps are halted by another suffering — that of a woman who has been bleeding for 12 years already. That means that she started bleeding on the same year Jairus’s critically ill daughter was born. The sufferings mirror each other.
The Gospel tells us that the woman already spent all that she had in search of healing but to no avail. Her disease renders her and all those whom she touches as ritually unclean. Today, she touches Jesus. That is enough.
Jesus turns around, looking for whoever touched Him and asks, “Who touched Me?” He feels the suffering ofa desperate father; why should He not feel the suffering of a woman who has been bleeding for 12 years?
The happy event of her healing is interrupted by messengers from Jairus’s house: his daughter has stopped breathing. This time, Jesus finally talks to Jairus: “Be not afraid; just believe.”
With His three disciples and the girl’s parents, Jesus holds the deceased child by the hand and commands her, “Little girl, I tell you, rise!” And she rises not only from the mattress of sickness but from the world of the dead as well.
As Jesus gives back the girl to her parents, He tells them to give her something to eat. It shows us how thoughtful Jesus is. The dead is no more. Feed the living. After all, relationships are built and nourished best in table fellowships.
“Who touched Me?” “Give her something to eat.” These statements are both about creating relationships. And that is what Jesus values most: our relationship with God and with one another. Often, our relationships need healing just like the bleeding woman or need to be restored to life like the little girl. Fr. Bobby Titco

Reflection Question:
How are my relationships? Are they Christ-centered?

Thank You, Jesus, for blessing my relationships. Where they need healing, please intervene and heal them. Where they need life, please touch them and make them life-giving. Amen.

St. Cinnia, pray for us.

BLESSING EXPERT

“Go home to your family and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” – Mark 5:19

Are you a blessing expert or a problem expert? A blessing expert highlights the positive things that happens throughout the day and even finds something encouraging about the not-so-positive events. A problem expert focuses more on things that didn’t turn out so well, the complaints and the mishaps.
I used to be a problem expert. But the Bible says I should tell people about the things the Lord has done for me. So I decided to list down daily five things I was thankful for that day. Oh boy, the feeling of gratitude was overwhelming. It kept my spirits up. Before I knew it, I was infecting the people around me, sharing with them the great and simple things happening to me on a daily basis.
I kept deciding every day to count my blessings, enumerate and describe them in detail, and feel God’s presence with gratitude and delight. I list them down in my “Victory Updates,” my gratitude journal.
Emphasizing the blessings regularly over the problems is not automatic. It’s a daily decision I have to make. Know what I realized? Being a blessing expert made me a happier person. Carlo Lorenzo (carloflorenzo@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
Decide today to be a blessing expert.

Open my eyes, heart and mind to the wonderful things all around me, Lord. Holy Spirit, fill me with courage and enthusiasm to recognize and be truly grateful for the blessings all around me every day.

1st READING

We continue the litany of heroes of faith. Let us never forget that we do not stand alone – we stand side by side with these men and women of the Old Testament and all the saints of the Church. As this is true we should not worry about doing what God calls us to as we know that all the saints are interceding for us. We have friends who are seated with God in glory – apart from being there ourselves, could we possibly ask for more?

Hebrews 11:32-40
32 Brothers and sisters: What more shall I say? I have not time to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets, 33 who by faith conquered kingdoms, did what was righteous, obtained the promises; they closed the mouths of lions, 34 put out raging fires, escaped the devouring sword; out of weakness they were made powerful, became strong in battle, and turned back foreign invaders. 35 Women received back their dead through resurrection. Some were tortured and would not accept deliverance, in order to obtain a better resurrection. 36 Others endured mockery, scourging, even chains and imprisonment. 37 They were stoned, sawed in two, put to death at sword’s point; they went about in skins of sheep or goats, needy, afflicted, tormented. 38 The world was not worthy of them. They wandered about in deserts and on mountains, in caves and in crevices in the earth. 39 Yet all these, though approved because of their faith, did not receive what had been promised. 40 God had foreseen something better for us, so that without us they should not be made perfect.

P S A L M

Psalm 31:20, 21, 22, 23, 24
R: Let your hearts take comfort, all who hope in the Lord.
19 [20] How great is the goodness, O LORD, which you have in store for those who fear you, and which, toward those who take refuge in you, you show in the sight of the children of men. (R) 20 [21] You hide them in the shelter of your presence from the plottings of men; you screen them within your abode from the strife of tongues. (R) 21 [22] Blessed be the LORD whose wondrous mercy he has shown me in a fortified city. (R) 22 [23] Once I said in my anguish, “I am cut off from your sight”; yet you heard the sound of my pleading when I cried out to you. (R) 23 [24] Love the LORD, all you his faithful ones! The LORD keeps those who are constant, but more than requites those who act proudly. (R)

G O S P E L

Jesus is willing to take on the unclean spirits and He is never defeated in battle. Jesus knows that He has the victory because He knows He is a Son of the Father. This is true of us as well and thus we need never fear the battle with the devil as we have victory in Christ. Sometimes it might be prudent to flee a battle that looks overwhelming so that we can live to fight another day, but most of the time if we stand firm in faith, Satan will flee as he is a coward and a thief.

ALLELUIA
R: Alleluia, alleluia
A great prophet has arisen in our midst and God has visited his people.
R: Alleluia, alleluia

Mark 5:1-20
1 Jesus and his disciples came to the other side of the sea, to the territory of the Gerasenes. 2 When he got out of the boat, at once a man from the tombs who had an unclean spirit met him. 3 The man had been dwelling among the tombs, and no one could restrain him any longer, even with a chain. 4 In fact, he had frequently been bound with shackles and chains, but the chains had been pulled apart by him and the shackles smashed, and no one was strong enough to subdue him. 5 Night and day among the tombs and on the hillsides he was always crying out and bruising himself with stones. 6 Catching sight of Jesus from a distance, he ran up and prostrated himself before him, 7 crying out in a loud voice, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me!” 8 (He had been saying to him, “Unclean spirit, come out of the man!”) 9 He asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “Legion is my name. There are many of us.” 10 And he pleaded earnestly with him not to drive them away from that territory. 11 Now a large herd of swine was feeding there on the hillside. 12 And they pleaded with him, “Send us into the swine. Let us enter them.” 13 And he let them, and the unclean spirits came out and entered the swine. The herd of about two thousand rushed down a steep bank into the sea, where they were drowned. 14 The swineherds ran away and reported the incident in the town and throughout the countryside. And people came out to see what had happened. 15 As they approached Jesus, they caught sight of the man who had been possessed by Legion, sitting there clothed and in his right mind. And they were seized with fear. 16 Those who witnessed the incident explained to them what had happened to the possessed man and to the swine. 17 Then they began to beg him to leave their district. 18 As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed pleaded to remain with him. 19 But he would not permit him but told him instead, “Go home to your family and announce to them all that the Lord in his pity has done for you.” 20 Then the man went off and began to proclaim in the Decapolis what Jesus had done for him; and all were amazed.

What’s my Mission?

Again and again, we read in the Gospels that Jesus invites people to follow Him, or that people who were healed by Him decided to follow Him and join His band of disciples, even women — something unheard of in the society and culture in His time. In today’s Gospel, we read the unique event that the healed man wants nothing more than to follow Jesus, yet He does not allow him. He sends him home to share what he has experienced in the presence of the Lord. In today’s language, we would say: The healed man got a different vocation from that of the other disciples.
We discover here a very profound message for us. Each of us has a different vocation and we should be content with it, make the best out of it, and never envy other Christians who got a different vocation. Last September, Pope Benedict beatified in England the convert from the Anglican Church, Cardinal John Henry Newman. In one of his homilies, the Cardinal said, “Everyone who breathes, high and low, educated and ignorant, young and old, man and woman, has a mission, has a work. We are not sent into this world for nothing; we are not born at random… God sees everyone of us; He creates every soul, He lodges it in a body, one by one, for a purpose. He needs, He deigns to need, everyone of us.”
It would be wrong to think that if you are neither a nun, a priest, a catechist, a lector nor commentator during Mass, you are good for nothing in the church and only a member. Nobody baptized into the Body of Christ is “only a member.” St. Paul makes us aware that in a body, each member has a different and important function. Anyone who belongs to the Church, the mystical Body of Christ, has a function.
The sending away of the healed man on a special mission makes us reflect on our own distinct vocation in the Church — be it in the family, among friends or wherever God has placed us. Jesus tells us, too, “Go to your home… and tell all that the Lord has done for you!”  Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD

Reflection Question:
Do I feel useless in the Church? What could be my special mission?

Lord, You made me aware that I have a mission, different from that of others. Help me to discover it and do it well.

St. Julius of Novara, pray for us.

HEAVENLY PRESENT

“Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven.” – Matthew 5:12

Our wedding anniversary fell on a Sunday, a day of ministry service for us. We were busy practically the whole of the week so I didn’t have time to buy my wife an anniversary present. I wasn’t even able to get her a bouquet of flowers which I traditionally do. But my wife understood because we dedicated our time to service. We ended the day happy despite the absence of our usual anniversary “trimmings.”
The following morning when we opened our front door, the scent of narra flowers rushed through our house. Our narra tree, which we had waited long to blossom, was in full bloom. It filled our house with its sweet smell. It had so much flowers that the road was almost covered in yellow and those passing by underneath the tree thought yellow snow was precipitating.
So much joy filled our married hearts as we realized that God greeted us on our anniversary not just with a bouquet of flowers but a tree full of blossoms. God honored our special day with an even more special token for those who serve Him.Rolly España (rnespana@nwineskin.com)

REFLECTION:
Do you regret giving your “prime” time to God?

Father, I pray that You give value to my life through my service. Accept it as my form of worship.

COMPANION

1st READING
Integrity is perhaps one of the least understood aspects of the moral life. Perhaps this is because we seem to be taught from an early age to compartmentalize our lives and thus have developed the capacity to rationalize away our sin with sentiments such as: “It is only a little amount of money I am stealing,” or “I usually do my tax return properly” or “Every one else is doing it” and so on. None of these excuses has even a minute amount of validity. Sin is sin and we need to be strong and honest enough to call it as such.

Zephaniah 2:3; 3:12-13
3 Seek the LORD, all you humble of the earth, who have observed his law; seek justice, seek humility; perhaps you may be sheltered on the day of the LORD’s anger. 3: 12 But I will leave as a remnant in your midst a people humble and lowly, who shall take refuge in the name of the LORD: 13 the remnant of Israel. They shall do no wrong and speak no lies; nor shall there be found in their mouths a deceitful tongue; they shall pasture and couch their flocks with none to disturb them.

P S A L M

Psalm 146:6-7, 8-9, 9-10
R: Blessed are the poor in spirit; the kingdom of heaven is theirs!
6 The LORD keeps faith forever, 7 secures justice for the oppressed, gives good to the hungry. The LORD sets captives free. (R) 8 The LORD gives sight to the blind; the LORD raises up those that were bowed down. The LORD loves the just. 9 The LORD protects strangers. (R) The fatherless and the widow he sustains, but the way of the wicked he thwarts. 10 The LORD shall reign forever; your God, O Zion, through all generations. Alleluia. (R)

2nd READING

Sometimes we are simply better off just accepting the way God does things than to try and understand the way His mind and will works. When we speak of God we always do so with a sense of analogy. To transfer our human experiences on to the all-powerful and all-perfect God would be to do Him a huge injustice. No matter how well I live a certain virtue, God does it better, even infinitely better. We just have to learn to accept this fact of our imperfect lives.

1 Corinthians 1:26-31
26 Consider your own calling, brothers and sisters. Not many of you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. 27 Rather, God chose the foolish of the world to shame the wise, and God chose the weak of the world to shame the strong, 28 and God chose the lowly and despised of the world, those who count for nothing, to reduce to nothing those who are something, 29 so that no human being might boast before God. 30 It is due to him that you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, as well as righteousness, sanctification, and redemption, 31 so that, as it is written, “Whoever boasts, should boast in the Lord.”

G O S P E L

It would be a good thing if every man, woman and child reflected upon one beatitude every day and sought to live it out in their life that day. It certainly would not hurt the world for this to happen. I wonder if we, as individuals, are willing to do this or something similar to this without the guarantee that anyone else will do the same. If so, then I believe that such an individual is well on the way to becoming a saint.

ALLELUIA
R: Alleluia, alleluia
Rejoice and be glad; your reward will be great in heaven.
R: Alleluia, alleluia

Matthew 5:1-12
1 When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain, and after he had sat down, his disciples came to him. 2 He began to teach them, saying: 3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land. 6 Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied. 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. 8 Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. 10 Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven.”

SABBATH

Two lists of Beatitudes

The Greek philosopher Aristotle wrote, “Happiness is that which everybody seeks.” He also observes that everything people do is what they believe will bring them happiness. But the problem is that what we think will bring us happiness does not in fact always bring us true and lasting happiness. So Aristotle says that the ethical person knows and does what can truly bring them not just excitement but true and lasting happiness.
Another word for true and lasting happiness is “blessedness” or “beatitude.” In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus shows that He wants His followers to have true and lasting happiness, the happiness that the world cannot give. The eight beatitudes constitute a road map for anyone seeking to attain this true happiness.
If the world were asked to draw up the “Beatitudes of the 21st Century,” we would get a list very different from that which Jesus gives.
“Blessed are the poor in spirit” would become “Blessed are the rich.”
“Blessed are those who mourn” would become “Blessed are those having fun.”
“Blessed are the meek” would become “Blessed are the smart.”
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness” would become “Blessed are those who wine and dine.”
“Blessed are the merciful” would become “Blessed are the powerful.”
“Blessed are the pure in heart” would become “Blessed are the slim in body.”
And so on...
We see that Jesus’ values are counter-cultural. We cannot accept His teachings and at the same time accept all the values of our society. The question for us today, therefore, is this: “Do we live our lives following the values of the world as a way of attaining happiness or do we live by the teachings of Jesus? If you live by the teachings of Jesus, then “rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven.” Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD

Reflection Question:
Where do I seek true happiness? Do I look for it in the wrong places?

Lord, I feel that I am still far from attaining the happiness You intend for me. Cleanse my heart and mind so that I will be able to follow You and hear You one day say to me, “Blessed are you.”

St. Savina, pray for us.
