AGNOSTIC NO MORE

“For it is time to seek the Lord, till he come and rain down justice upon you.” – Hosea 10:12

It was startling to know that this woman who was born and raised a Catholic once turned agnostic. She was an intelligent learner, always questioning things — especially the teachings of the Church. But when she couldn’t find the answers that satisfied her queries, she doubted God’s existence. She breezed through life as a non-believer.
But when she faced a very difficult trial in her marriage, she went to a church to confront this so-called God. “Do you really exist? If you’re so powerful, manifest yourself to me and help me out here,” she demanded. A voice inside her head seemed to answer all her questions. She could not explain it, but it seemed that God finally manifested Himself to her. Her life was never the same. She is now a devout Catholic. She goes around the world to bear witness to her faith and to His love. She sought God, and He transformed her completely.
Our verse for today reads, “It is time to seek the Lord.” Let us seek Him out every day and allow Him to work in our lives.Nova Arias (nova.
REFLECTION:
Were there times in your life when you doubted God’s existence? How did He manifest Himself  to you?

Forgive me, Lord, for the times I doubted Your presence in my life.

1st READING

Israel at the time of Hosea was a mixture of faithfulness and idolatry. Portions of the Kingdom were flourishing while others were not. This is very much the same for the Church and the world today. It is the last line of the reading we need to heed. God calls us to seek and sow righteousness in our lives for that is the only means by which we will  permanently bear good fruit.

Hosea 10:1-3, 7-8, 12
1 Israel is a luxuriant vine whose fruit matches its growth. The more abundant his fruit, the more altars he built; The more productive his land, the more sacred pillars he set up. 2 Their heart is false, now they pay for their guilt; God shall break down their altars and destroy their sacred pillars. 3 If they would say, “We have no king” — Since they do not fear the LORD, what can the king do for them? 7 The king of Samaria shall disappear, like foam upon the waters. 8 The high places of Aven shall be destroyed, the sin of Israel; thorns and thistles shall overgrow their altars. Then they shall cry out to the mountains, “Cover us!” and to the hills, “Fall upon us!” 12 “Sow for yourselves justice, reap the fruit of piety; Break up for yourselves a new field, for it is time to seek the LORD, till he come and rain down justice upon you.”

P S A L M
Psalm 105:2-3, 4-5, 6-7
R: Seek always the face of the Lord.
2 Sing to him, sing his praise, proclaim all his wondrous deeds. 3 Glory in his holy name; rejoice, O hearts that seek the LORD! (R) 4 Look to the LORD in his strength; seek to serve him constantly. 5 Recall the wondrous deeds that he has wrought, his portents, and the judgments he has uttered. (R) 6 You descendants of Abraham, his servants, sons of Jacob, his chosen ones! 7 He, the LORD, is our God; throughout the earth his judgments prevail. (R)

G O S P E L
Jesus tells His apostles to take the Gospel to the “lost sheep of the House of Israel.” It seems today, with Mass attendance hovering somewhere below 25 percent in most parts of the world, that there is plenty of opportunities available to take the Gospel to the lost sheep of the House of the Church. It seems that there is a compelling case for the re-evangelization of the nations, not just a first evangelization.

Matthew 10:1-7
1 Jesus summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits to drive them out and to cure every disease and every illness. 2 The names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon called Peter, and his brother Andrew; James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John; 3 Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James, the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddeus; 4 Simon the Cananean, and Judas Iscariot who betrayed him. 5 Jesus sent out these twelve after instructing them thus, “Do not go into pagan territory or enter a Samaritan town. 6 Go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 7 As you go, make this proclamation: ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’”

my reflections
think: God calls us to seek and sow righteousness in our lives for that is the only means by which we will permanently bear good fruit.

EVANGELIZATION: LIKE TO LIKE

Experience down through the centuries tells us that the most effective evangelizers of teens, generally speaking, are also teens. The same is true of nationalities and so on. Each person is an individual and that the best way to bring the truth of the Gospel to him is through his natural relationships. This is why social networks are effective tools in bringing people to Christ.
Jesus sends out His apostles to the Jewish people because He knows that this is the social and cultural group they know best. Yes, there are men and women who can work in cross-cultural situations, but they are of a relatively rare breed. It takes a certain selflessness to let go of one’s culture of origin and embrace a new one. Down through the centuries of Church mission work, God has raised up individuals to spearhead works in different cultures. But if you read the history of such efforts you will begin to realize the difficulties they faced. These heroic men and women are to be commended for their perseverance and courage.
In the work of evangelization, it is the Gospel that judges the culture and not the other way around. We have to respect the culture of a people. Nevertheless, every culture must ultimately be subject to the truths of morality that are essential not just to the Gospel message, but also to human flourishing per se. Jesus is aware that the Jewish faith, as expressed in its religion, needed correction and the Gospels relate many cases to point. We must be ready to stand firm in the truth of the Gospel in the face of any attack that may be directed against us. The Church has been entrusted not just with the truth of the Gospel but also with the truth of who we are as human beings —true human morality. We must always remain in dialogue with other cultures but never at the cost of the truth. Let us pray that we will remain faithful both to the Gospel and the truth of the human person, created in the image and likeness of God. Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
How am I witnessing to the truth of the Gospel to my friends and those with whom I have frequent contact? Am I always faithful to the truth?

Jesus, help me to understand better the truths of the Gospel and humanity so that I will be better able to stand for them in all my relationships and efforts of evangelization.

Blessed Ralph Milner, pray for us.
