MY TRUE WEALTH

“Thus will it be for the one who stores up treasure for himself but is not rich in what matters to God.” – Luke 12:21

In 2008, I went to Macau and spent five days with six fantastic buddies of mine: Hermie Morelos, Jill Ramiscal, Pio Español, Roy Pasimio, Tim Duran and Carl Fontanilla, and our wives. They also happen to be the pioneer leaders of my community, Light of Jesus. We had no talks, no meetings, no sessions. Instead, we talked, laughed, bonded and ate lots of Chinese food. We had enormous fun just being together.
Here’s the secret: I’ve discovered that we should first of all be friends before we’re fellow leaders. Once the leaders of a community stop being friends, the organization will divide. Guaranteed. Not that we don’t fight — we do. But we’ve stuck together like glue because we’ve decided to grow old together, no matter what happens. A long time ago, I’ve defined that my wealth is my relationships — not my money, properties or investments. My wealth is my relationship with God, my family, my friends, my community, and with the spiritually and materially poor that I minister to daily. Friends, that’s the reason why I’m rich. Bo Sanchez (bosanchez@kerygmafamily.com)

REFLECTION:
What matters most to you in life — riches or relationships?

Lord, help me to focus on the things that truly matter: the people You send to cross my path.

COMPANION

1st READING

To think we can achieve something worthwhile without the help of God is not just vanity; it is tantamount to blasphemy and heresy. God is the author of all that is good; we are totally dependent upon Him in doing good, even if we are unaware of this truth. As we seek to follow the Lord, let us never forget that we owe the opportunity for discipleship to His mercy.

Ecclesiastes 1:2; 2:21-23
2 Vanity of vanities, says Qoheleth, vanity of vanities! All things are vanity! 2: 21 Here is a man who has labored with wisdom and knowledge and skill, and to another, who has not labored over it, he must leave his property. This also is vanity and a great misfortune. 22 For what profit comes to a man from all the toil and anxiety of heart with which he has labored under the sun? 23 All his days sorrow and grief are his occupation; even at night his mind is not at rest. This also is vanity.

P S A L M

Psalm 90:3-4, 5-6, 12-13, 14, 17
R: If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
3 You turn man back to dust, saying, “Return, O children of men.” 4 For a thousand years in your sight are as yesterday, now that it is past, or as a watch of the night. (R) 5 You make an end of them in their sleep; the next morning they are like the changing grass, 6 which at dawn springs up anew, but by evening wilts and fades. (R) 12 Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain wisdom of heart. 13 Return, O LORD! How long? Have pity on your servants! (R) 14 Fill us at daybreak with your kindness, that we may shout for joy and gladness all our days. 17 And may the gracious care of the Lord our God be ours; prosper the work of our hands for us! Prosper the work of our hands! (R)

2nd READING
There is no place for sin in the life of a disciple of Jesus. As simple as this truth may be to understand, it is a whole lot more difficult to live out. Only by the grace of God are we able to both know and live this truth. Let us give thanks to Him for His merciful love that puts sin to death in our lives for good.

Colossians 3:1-5, 9-11
1 Brothers and sisters: If you were raised with Christ, seek what is above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2 Think of what is above, not of what is on earth. 3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ your life appears, then you too will appear with him in glory. 5 Put to death, then, the parts of you that are earthly: immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and the greed that is idolatry. 9 Stop lying to one another, since you have taken off the old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed, for knowledge, in the image of its creator. 11 Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all and in all.

G O S P E L

Possessions, earthly goods and material things cannot accompany us to heaven. They may give us pleasure now, but if that pleasure is not directed towards eternal life it is fruitless, useless and possibly even sinful. Discipleship is a serious business — following the will of God is all about making choices; are you up to it? Are you ready to forsake the pleasures of the world for the sake of the Kingdom of God?

Luke 12:13-21
13 Someone in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, tell my brother to share the inheritance with me.” 14 He replied to him, “Friend, who appointed me as your judge and arbitrator?” 15 Then he said to the crowd, “Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of  possessions.” 16 Then he told them a parable. “There was a rich man whose land produced a bountiful harvest. 17 He asked himself, ‘What shall I do, for I do not have space to store my harvest?’ 18 And he said, “This is what I shall do: I shall tear down my barns and build larger ones. There I shall store all my grain and other goods 19 and I shall say to myself, “Now as for you, you have so many good things stored up for many years, rest, eat, drink, be merry!”’ 20 But God said to him, ‘You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?’ 21 Thus will it be for the one who stores up treasure for himself but is not rich in what matters to God.”

my reflections
t h i n k : T here is no place for sin in the life of a disciple of Jesus.

HARDEN NOT YOUR HEARTS

Traditionally, greed is one of the seven deadly sins. It seems old fashioned calling it by name but greed (covetousness) raises its ugly head every now and then. Sometimes it is obvious; other times, so hidden until given a chance to manifest itself, however subtle. As human beings, we tend to be naturally selfish but in the life of grace we become purified and selfless. Our desires must be constantly purified and put in right order. Greed is a disorder of the human person, a manifestation of concupiscence or our tendency to sin.
Reflect upon the attitude of the man in the Gospel.
Life is successful for him. He lives in prosperity and fortune. He enjoys the benefits of his harvest that he does not know how to accommodate the abundance of provision given him. “What shall I do?” he asks himself. There is no mention of God in his good fortune. No thanksgiving or offering to others for God’s kindness. Look at how selfish and greedy he really is. He says to himself, “Now as for you…” But God always has other ideas. What a pity for this self-centered, greedy and inward-looking man. God, the Maker and Giver of all things, demands an account of this man’s life. He cannot take his wealth to his grave. The things he prepared for so long, who would they belong to when he dies? The man is controlled by his possessions that he lacks the most important thing that only the Lord can grant him: eternal life. He has become so fixated on worldly treasures but has forgotten the purpose of his existence, which is to love God and be with him forever in heaven.
Like this man, we do not know when God will call us to His heavenly home. What account will we give when we meet this Judge of the Living and the dead? Let us take care and guard ourselves against greed. “Teach us, Lord, the number of our days that we may gain wisdom of heart” (Psalm 90:12). Fr. Brian Steele, MGL

Reflection Question:
Am I filled with greed? What are the things that I see as taking possession over my life?

Lord God, You are the Giver of all good things. I thank You for entrusting to me so many things. May I use them wisely for Your glory and not my own. Amen.

St. Hope, pray for us.

“Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.”– Matthew 14: 8

Our group had two hours to kill while waiting to board our plane back to Manila. We had a lively exchange of stories about the company’s performance, bosses and their leadership styles, the economy and the protest rallies. Then, out of the blue, someone asked, “Anybody here attending the Kerygma Conference?” Silence. “I will!” I volunteered. Another seconded. Silence again. In less than 10 seconds, the topic was squashed.
Even as Catholics, the Scripture or any reference to the faith does not make interesting conversation topic. Ashamed to be branded as old fashioned, we sometimes choose to be private about our beliefs and remain passive in proclaiming them. Worried about being misinterpreted, we are hesitant to enjoin colleagues in our work with the marginalized community.
In contrast, martyrs died in defense of their faith. St. John lost his head for the truth. Our Lord God, out of His great love for us, gave up His only Son for our salvation. But we, who are most unworthy, are timid to acknowledge and stand up for Him, much less sacrifice for Him. What a shame!Marie Franco (rfranco@its.jnj.com)

REFLECTION:
I say now that I will stand up for Jesus. But in the moment of truth, will I?

Grant me, dear Lord, the courage to be proud to be a Catholic.

1st READING

Verse 16 is a sign of the work of the Lord — at least they spare Jeremiah’s life. They have not chosen to repent, yet, but at least they are not going to multiply their sins and take the life of an innocent man. It is not the same for Jesus. There will always be enemies of the truth in the world. There will always be people who seek to enrich themselves at the cost of others’ lives. We cannot remain silent as disciples of Jesus. We must speak up against injustice and sin.

Jeremiah 26:11-16, 24
11 The priests and prophets said to the princes and to all the people, “This man deserves death; he has prophesied against this city, as you have heard with your own ears.” 12 Jeremiah gave this answer to the princes and all the people, “It was the LORD who sent me to prophesy against this house and city all that you have heard. 13 Now, therefore, reform your ways and your deeds; listen to the voice of the LORD your God, so that the LORD will repent of the evil with which he threatens you. 14 As for me, I am in your hands; do with me what you think good and right. 15 But mark well: if you put me to death, it is innocent blood you bring on yourselves, on this city and its citizens. For in truth it was the LORD who sent me to you, to speak all these things for you to hear.” 16 Thereupon the princes and all the people said to the priests and the prophets, “This man does not deserve death; it is in the name of the LORD, our God, that he speaks to us.” 24 So Ahikam, son of Shaphan, protected Jeremiah, so that he was not handed over to the people to be put to death.

P S A L M

Psalm 69:15-16, 30-31, 33-34
R: Lord, in your great love, answer me.
14 [15] Rescue me out of the mire; may I not sink! may I be rescued from my foes, and from the watery depths. 15 [16] Let not the flood-waters overwhelm me, nor the abyss swallow me up, nor the pit close its mouth over me. (R) 29 [30] But I am afflicted and in pain; let your saving help, O God, protect me. 30 [31] I will praise the name of God in song, and I will glorify him with thanksgiving. (R) 32 [33] “See, you lowly ones, and be glad; you who seek God, may your hearts revive! 33 [34] For the LORD hears the poor, and his own who are in bonds he spurns not.” (R)

G O S P E L
What a way to go! Having one’s head severed simply because a young girl has pleased the king with a dance must go down as one of the most frivolous reasons ever for beheading someone. Yet, this is the nature of sin even up to now — pleasure winning out over the pursuit of righteousness and holiness. We have to be the ones to put a stop to it. And the only way to do this is to live the life of the Gospel without compromise.

Matthew 14:1-12
1 Herod the tetrarch heard of the reputation of Jesus 2 and said to his servants, “This man is John the Baptist. He has been raised from the dead; that is why mighty powers are at work in him.” 3 Now Herod had arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, 4 for John had said to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.” 5 Although he wanted to kill him, he feared the people, for they regarded him as a prophet. 6 But at a birthday celebration for Herod, the daughter of Herodias performed a dance before the guests and delighted Herod 7 so much that he swore to give her whatever she might ask for.  8 Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.” 9 The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and the guests who were present, he ordered that it be given, 10 and he had John beheaded in the prison. 11 His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl, who took it to her mother. 12 His disciples came and took away the corpse and buried him; and they went and told Jesus.

STRENGTH AND COURAGE

Herod is a weakling and a coward, with very little character worth mentioning. On the other hand, Ignatius of Loyola, whose feast we celebrate today, is exactly the opposite. Herod does not even have the strength to defend the life of a man whom he knows is innocent. Ignatius stands for the truth in the face of persecution and suffering because he knows the truth is worth any price that he personally might have to pay.
People would probably look at Herod and say he was a strong man, after all he was the ruler of Galilee and its environs. He also holds the lives of many people in his hands, as John the Baptist would later find out. But the opposite is true. All the armies in the world are incapable of storming the gates of heaven to force entry; a righteous man will enter without even having to raise his voice. It all depends on how we measure strength. What do we focus on when we talk about strength of character? Who do you think are the strongest men and women to walk the earth?
In my book, Mother Theresa, barely five feet tall, was one of the most powerful and strongest people to live. Her strength of character and integrity would put most people to shame. No doubt she was a righteous woman, even if she had her fair share of flaws, and she was never afraid to stand for the truth and to live by it. This is what makes a person worth emmulating. This is the example that we ought to put before the youth of today.
Jesus spoke and lived with authority because He spoke and lived the truth no matter what it cost him. Francis of Assisi renounced his inheritance to embrace Lady Poverty and live a poor man’s life and so witness to us God’s providential care. All the saints heard a call from God and followed it to the best of their ability. That, too, is what we are all called to do: follow the will of God to the best that we can. Anything we can’t do, the grace of God will surely help us do it.Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
What do I see as strength and courage when it comes to assessing such characteristics in the lives of others?

Lord Jesus, help me to grow in strength of character so that my life will serve as beacon of righteous living — a light for all to see.

St. Justin de Jacobis, pray for us.
