Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God

HAVE A SUPER BLESSED YEAR!

The Lord bless you and keep you! – Numbers 6:24

My sons love playing with clay. It’s a great toy because you can shape it any way you want.
My boys would ask, “Dad, make a ball!” and I’d roll it on my hands and make a ball. Then they’d say, “Dad, make a hotdog!”and I’d rub it between my palms and make a hotdog. Then they’d ask, “Dad, make an Optimus Prime Transformer robot!” and I’d tell them, “Nah, that’s too simple for me. Here, why don’t you try it?”
Friend, here’s the truth that you may not know. Your life is like clay in your hand.
Because God has given you the power to shape your life.
And this new year is no different.
How do you want your 2012 to look like? It’s really up to you. It’s your choice. You call the shots. You decide your destiny.
I repeat. Your life is a clump of clay. And God has given you two powerful tools to shape your life: your faith and your action. Actually, faith and action are one.
Because the clearest expression of your faith is when you act on what you believe.
And you’ll discover that life — and all of God’s creation — will adjust to your faith and action. Have a blessed 2012!Bo Sanchez (bosanchez@kerygmafamily.com)

REFLECTION:
Check your actions. Do they match your faith?

Lord, give me the audacity to act as my faith dictates.

Mary, Mother of God, pray for us

COMPANION

Be Renewed by His Word

The Letter to the Hebrews tells us that the Word of God is alive and active, sharper than a double-edged sword. The question is whether or not we allow the Word of God to take root in our lives and so cut away our sins and form us from within.
Paul tells us that conversion is all about the renewal of our minds according to the will of God and the grace and power of the Holy Spirit (Romans 12:1-2). Francis Martin, an OFM priest, believes that the biggest challenge the Church faces in the 21st century is the battle for the minds of people. The devil works to distract the people of God from matters of truth with his lies and the pursuit of pleasure over responsibility. We see this already happening in the compromises that people take with regard to sexual ethics and life issues such as abortion and euthanasia.
The Holy Spirit works to form men and women in the mind of Christ according to the truth of our being created in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:26-27). If we believe this, we will be constantly challenged to make a stand against the world’s values, which see life as another commodity to be traded according to the desires of the economy. We have to stand up for the truth. This is why daily reflection of the Scripture is important. It will form us in the mind of Christ and we will know what God asks of us — to be men and women of the light, of the truth, and of the Gospel, commissioned to bring the Good News of salvation to the ends of the earth.
God bless you all and may you remain faithful to forming your minds and hearts according to the mind and heart of God. Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

1st READING

Blessings are always a sign of God’s pleasure. We forget about this at times, therefore, we do not fully appreciate the significance of receiving a blessing from Him. When we meet someone we greet them and ask them how they are doing. It is a sign of politeness to do this, just as it is a sign of God’s favour when we receive His blessing. Let us open our hearts anew this year with greater expectation and openness to receiving the blessings of God in whatever form they may come.

Numbers 6:22-27
22 The Lord said to Moses: 23 “Speak to Aaron and his sons and tell them: This is how you shall bless the Israelites. Say to them: 24 The Lord bless you and keep you! 25 The Lord let his face shine upon you, and be gracious to you! 26 The Lord look upon you kindly and give you peace! 27 So shall they invoke my name upon the Israelites, and I will bless them.”

P S A L M

Psalm 67:2-3, 5, 6, 8
R: May God bless us in his mercy.
1 [2] May God have pity on us and bless us; may he let his face shine upon us. 2 [3] So may your way be known upon earth; among all nations, your salvation. (R) 4 [5] May the nations be glad and exult because you rule the peoples in equity; the nations on the earth you guide. (R) 5 [6] May the peoples praise you, O God; may all the peoples praise you! 7 [8] May God bless us, and may all the ends of the earth fear him! (R)

2nd READING

We are subject to all types of laws. How do we understand the blessing of these laws? They are a blessing as they help us to understand what theCdemands of God, society or life in general make upon us. It is not for us to determine right and wrong in an absolute sense. The Law does this for us. It is up to us how we follow the law in our lives.

Galatians 4:4-7
4 Brothers and sisters: When the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to ransom those under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. 6 As proof that you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!” 7 So you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son then also an heir, through God.

G O S P E L

Mary is the Mother of God, the Mother of Jesus. What does this mean? It means that she has been given a special role in mediating between the Son of God and us. Through her humility and obedience, she brings Jesus into the world. Each of us can also do this through our own obedience to God’s will. We can all be mediators of God to the world by witnessing to His presence in our lives through following His will for us.

gospel acclamation
In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets; in these last days, he has spoken to us through the Son.

Luke 2:16-21
16 The shepherds went in haste to Bethlehem and found Mary and Joseph, and the infant lying in the manger. 17 When they saw this, they made known the message that had been told them about this child. 18 All who heard it were amazed by what had been told them by the shepherds. 19 And Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart. 20 Then the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, just as it had been told to them. 21 When eight days were completed for his circumcision, he was named Jesus, the name given him by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

JUST AS WE HAVE BEEN TOLD

You are certainly thankful you have reached this point in your life. You wonder how things would have been had you not listened to your parents. Their words still reverberate in your mind, “Just focus on the good that awaits you. Don’t allow the distractions of the present to take your mind away from what is essential and important. You’ll see — all your hardships will pay off in the future.”
And so now you’re here — your heart overflowing with gratitude to the ones who saw you through. “I told you so,” your mom enthuses. You just smile in agreement, for your heart cannot contain the joy of seeing yourself with all these blessings at your fingertips just as you have been told. Imagine the joy of the shepherds seeing the Infant Jesus lying in the manger. They have been told all these by the angel — the personages, the dimly lit cave, the animals, the lights, the star, the angels, the melodic sound coming from above. They all marveled at these, for they are exactly how the angel had told them.
The joy of a promise fulfilled — a vow kept, a pact realized, a covenant faithfully followed. There is no explaining how much joy there can be in the hearts of those who have seen these realized in their own lives. But the story in today’s Gospel is no ordinary story. It is an account of the beginning of God’s redeeming act. The promise of salvation has long been told. And in these events they gradually unfold just as it has been told. Just imagine how things would be when our vindication happens — to the poor in spirit, the kingdom of heaven; to the meek, the earth; to the mourning, consolation; to the hungry, satisfaction; to the merciful, mercy; to the pure of heart, beatific vision; to the peacemakers, divine sonship. How our hearts will be filled with joy, when all these are realized, at the end of our life’s journey, just as we have been told.Fr. Sandy V. Enhaynes

REFLECTION QUESTION:
Are you still waiting for the fulfillment of a promise made to you — either by God or another person? Don’t lose hope — it may happen this year.

Lord Jesus, thank You for the new year. May this year bring us renewed hope and trust in the fulfillment of Your promises to us.

Reason for the Season

“ And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us...” – John 1:1,14

It used to be so much fun spending Christmas with relatives. I watched a lot of Christmas-themed cartoons with cousins, went to family reunions and received a lot of gifts.
Years went by. Some relatives have passed away, others migrated or have their reasons for skipping reunions. The excitement, the thrill, the joy have become a rarity.
What’s wrong with this picture? I’ve been missing the whole point. Today’s Gospel puts everything in perspective. The reason for the season. It’s Christmas, the day Jesus was born, that’s the most intense and awesome gift to us. God in all His greatness was born in a very humble manger, a wrinkly baby, needing to be fed, taken cared of, helpless. All that, just to save us from hell.
Hey, maybe next Christmas will be different. Maybe next Christmas, I might just share about Jesus in our family reunion. It’s something we already know but I think we ought to talk about over and over again, and feel the profound love God showed us. It might feel a bit awkward but, what the heck, I’ll just do it, and start making Christmases more about Jesus. Really about Jesus. Carlo Lorenzo (carloflorenzo@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
What do I look forward to this Christmas season? What should I do to make Christmas more meaningful in line with the Reason for the Season?

Holy Spirit, whisper to me what I can do to make Christmas more Jesus-centered and more meaningful in my life and in the lives of my loved ones.

COMPANION

1st READING

St. John the Apostle was called by Jesus when he and his brother were busy mending their nets. This is a prefiguring of the future ministry of St. John as one who would bring us back to the basics when we are beginning to get sidetracked. John speaks of the centrality of love in the Christian life and of remaining faithful to Christ and His Word. The world and all its enticements can lead us away from following Christ and so St. John warns us against falling in love with this world.

1John 2:18-21
18 Children, it is the last hour; and just as you heard that the antichrist was coming, so now many antichrists have appeared. Thus we know this is the last hour. 19 They went out from us, but they were not really of our number; if they had been, they would have  remained with us. Their desertion shows that none of them was of our number. 20 But you have the anointing that comes from the holy one, and you all have knowledge. 21 I write to you not because you do not know the truth but because you do, and because every lie is alien to the truth.

P S A L M

Psalms 96:1-2, 11-12, 13
R: Let the heavens be glad and the earth rejoice!
1 Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all you lands. 2 Sing to the LORD; bless his name; announce his salvation, day after day. (R) 11 Let the heavens be glad and the earth rejoice; let the sea and what fills it resound; 12 let the plains be joyful and all that is in them! Then shall all the trees of the forest exult before the LORD. (R) 13 The LORD comes; he comes to rule the earth. He shall rule the world with justice and the peoples with his constancy. (R)

G O S P E L

John the Evangelist sees that Christ Jesus is the Word that dwelt with the Father for all time. As the Word, He was with the Father at the beginning of creation and was the instrument through whom everything was made. He comes among us as the light of the world, such that, for John, the word and light are one. When we receive Jesus into our lives, we receive the light of the world, which casts out the darkness. Let us today allow the wonderful light of Christ to fill our minds and hearts.

ALLELUIA
R: Alleluia, alleluia
The Word of God became flesh and dwelt among us. To those who accepted him he gave power to become the children of God.
R: Alleluia, alleluia
John 1:1-18
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be. What came to be 4 through him was life, and this life was the light of the human race; 5 the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. 6 A man named John was sent from God. 7 He came for testimony, to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. 8 He was not the light, but came to testify to the light. 9 The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world came to be through him, but the world did not know him. 11 He came to what was his own, but his own people did not accept him. 12 But to those who did accept him he gave power to become children of God, to those who believe in his name, 13 who were born not by natural generation nor by human choice nor by a man’s decision but of God. 14 And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us, and we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father’s only Son, full  of grace and truth. 15 John testified to him and cried out, saying, “This was he of whom I said, ‘The one who is coming after me ranks ahead of me because he existed before me.’” 16 From his fullness we have all received, grace in place of grace, 17 because while the law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God. The only-begotten Son, God, who is at the Father’s side, has revealed him.

Year Ender

Today is the last day of the year 2011. In less than 24 hours, we will bid goodbye to 2011 and welcome 2012. If you are reading this reflection, then you are probably one of the many who do not want 2011 to pass by unnoticed and unreflected.
They say there are two ways of seeing the year end. There are those who stay up to make sure the old year leaves. There are those who stay up until midnight to see the New Year come in. They say the first group are the pessimists, the second optimists. The first group ends and begins the year with regret and bitterness. The second group ends and begins the year with hope and positive attitude.
To which do you belong?
Choose to be an optimist. Your 2011 may not be perfect. Many things may have happened in 2011 that you would rather forget. An optimist does not try to forget 2011; he tries to transform it. An optimist cannot change the past, but he can change the way the past affects him. An optimist chooses to be a victor, not a victim. He chooses to see his mess as a message. He chooses to see his setbacks as opportunities to make a grand comeback.
So what will it be for you for 2012?
You have the power to choose.  Fr. Joel O. Jason

Reflection Question:
I’ve shared this with you before: “The best way to predict your future is to create it.” What are you doing now to create your future?

Lord Jesus, for all that has been, thanks! For all that will be, amen!

St. Melania, pray for us.
