AMERICAN GRACE

“See, I place my words in your mouth.” – Jeremiah1:9

“Are you American?” someone asked me after my talk in Victoria, Canada.
“No, madame, I am Filipino,” I answered.
“You sound like you’re American. Your accent is very American.”
That blew my mind.
Why? Because English is not my first or second language. I think it’s my fifth.
Even though I frequent the USA — a street in our village (I pass there on my way home) — my thoughts are in Filipino and I speak to myself in Filipino.
But I have been preaching God’s Word in English to different countries all over the world. How was I able to do that?
Just one word.
Grace.
God graces me with words to say. He graces me with how to speak His Word.
He even graces with understanding those who listen to me.
It’s all about His Grace.Arun Gogna (gognaa1@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
What area in your life do you think you need more of God’s grace?

Thank You for Your abounding grace, Lord! I am nothing apart from You.

COMPANION

1st READING

Jeremiah speaks for many of us when he voices his reluctance and fear to be a prophet; even some of the reasons he gives would ring true with us today. The fact is, it is never easy to be a spokesperson for the Lord. It is never going to be a highly popular vocation. But it is essential that the Church raises up men and women willing to speak out to the secular authorities and put the truth before them.

Jeremiah 1:1, 4-10
1 The words of Jeremiah, son of Hilkiah, of a priestly family in Anathoth, in the land of Benjamin. 4 The word of the LORD came to me thus: 5 Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I dedicated you, a prophet to the nations I appointed you. 6 “Ah, Lord GOD!” I said, “I know not how to speak; I am too young.” 7 But the LORD answered me, say not, “I am too young.” To whomever I send you, you shall go; whatever I command you, you shall speak. 8 Have no fear before them, because I am with you to deliver you, says the LORD. 9 Then the LORD extended his hand and touched my mouth, saying, ‘See, I place my words in your mouth! 10 This day I set you over nations and over kingdoms, to root up and to tear down, to destroy and to demolish, to build and to plant.’

Psalm 71:1-2, 3-4a, 5-6ab, 15, 17
R: I will sing of your salvation.
1 In you, O LORD, I take refuge; let me never be put to shame. 2 In your justice rescue me, and deliver me; incline your ear to me, and save me. (R) 3 Be my rock of refuge, a stronghold to give me safety, for you are my rock and my fortress. 4 O my God, rescue me from the hand of the wicked. (R) 5 For you are my hope, O Lord; my trust, O God, from my youth. 6 On you I depend from birth; from my mother’s womb you are my strength. (R) 15 My mouth shall declare your justice, day by day your salvation. 17 O God, you have taught me from my youth, and till the present I proclaim your wondrous deeds. (R)

One of the biggest dangers to our faith today is the busyness of our daily lives. This busyness tends to marginalize our faith to the point that we even consider it to be an option. We need to realize that the busier we are, the more we need to spend time with God in prayer. A lot of our busyness is pointless and avoidable if only we would sit down and be a bit more reflective in the choices we make. Socrates reminds us that an unreflected life is not worth living. Busyness is the first step towards this lack of reflection.

Matthew 13:1-9
1 On that day, Jesus went out of the house and sat down by the sea. 2 Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat down, and the whole crowd stood along the shore. 3 And he spoke to them at length in parables, saying: “A sower went out to sow. 4 And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path, and birds came and ate it up. 5 Some fell on rocky ground, where it had little soil. It sprang up at once because the soil was not deep, 6 and when the sun rose it was scorched, and it withered for lack of roots. 7 Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it. 8 But some seed fell on rich soil, and produced fruit, a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold. 9 Whoever has ears ought to hear.”

my reflections
t h i n k : An unreflected life is not worth living.

BEARING THE RIGHT FRUIT IN OUR LIVES

Some people will argue that the result is not that important — rather, it is the intention that counts. This is both true and false because it is the intention that counts when we determine the moral rectitude of particular acts. When we examine the morality of a particular course of action, we actually have to ask ourselves three questions. The first concerns the intention of the person; the second the objective nature of the act itself; and thirdly, the situation or circumstances of the act. All three must be good or appropriate if the act as a whole is to be good. That is, if there is deficiency in one aspect, the whole act is deficient. Let us focus here on the second aspect: the objective nature of the act.
The objective nature of what we do is always governed by the fruits of the act. The problem with today’s parable is that it might encourage a sort of quantitative measurement of the fruits of an act — whereas, when it comes to morality, our first concern is at the level of truth. It is completely immoral to do something evil in order to achieve greater fruitfulness of an act. We are morally obliged to consider the truth as paramount and non-negotiable when it comes to examining the goodness or value of an act. We can only compare levels of fruitfulness once the goodness of both acts has been ascertained.
In today’s utilitarian world, we often prefer the larger return even if the means of obtaining it are morally questionable. In the years to come, as the financial meltdown of October 2008 is examined, we will discover that greed was the governing factor that led people to create more and more questionable transactions (to the point of both economic and moral irresponsibility) to obtain greater profits. Yes, we always need to be concerned about the fruits of our action, but not at the expense of truth (economic or otherwise) and, hence, morality. Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
Do I neglect to examine the means by which I achieve a fruitful end when I act? Have I placed fruitfulness above truth in my moral life?

Holy Spirit, help me to keep my eyes on the prize — eternal life — as it is only then that I will fully realize that truth is more important than expediency.

St. Julia of Troyes, pray for us.
