IS IT TORTURE OR IS IT BLISS?

But He said to them, “To the other towns also I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God, because for this purpose I have been sent.” – Luke 4:43

Fly. Preach. Fly. Preach. And inhale oxygen somewhere in between. If I can also catch a small meal between engagements, praise God. If not, a banana will do.
Everywhere I go, people ask me, “How can you do all that you do?” They say my calendar is torture. No, it’s not. I love what I do. So to me, my calendar is not torture but a thrilling adventure.
I do something that I learned from Olympic champions: In my mind, I visualize what I want to happen.
So before each trip, I imagine that in every talk I’ll give, my audience will receive God’s love. People will be spiritually nourished. People will experience God as never before. They’ll feel so blessed, they’ll tell their friends about the experience.
And it happens! Because I am doing what I believe is my mission in life, God has been pouring grace upon grace, blessing upon blessing not only upon me but upon my family and ministries as well.
Discover your mission and be open to unimagined blessings in your life. Bo Sanchez (bosanchez@kerygmafamily.com)

REFLECTION:
What is that God-ordained mission that He meant for you when He created you?

Dear Lord, open my heart and mind to see Your purpose for my life, and grant me the courage to do it.

COMPANION

1st READING

Paul talks about the nature of conversion — its beginning, growth and maturity. There is division along the lines of who the people think is the more important evangelist, as they are divided into the camps of Apollos and Paul. Paul thinks this is ridiculous and a sign of great immaturity, for the only thing that really counts is Jesus. It is Jesus who saves and the Holy Spirit who brings the growth. Both he and Apollos are mere servants of God.

1 Corinthians 3:1-9
1 Brothers and sisters, I could not talk to you as spiritual people, but as fleshly people, as infants in Christ. 2 I fed you milk, not solid food, because you were unable to take it. Indeed, you are still not able, even now, 3 for you are still of the flesh. While there is jealousy and rivalry among you, are you not of the flesh, and behaving in an ordinary human way? 4 Whenever someone says, “I belong to Paul,” and another, “I belong to Apollos,” are you not merely human? 5 What is Apollos, after all, and what is Paul? Ministers through whom you became believers, just as the Lord assigned each one. 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God caused the growth. 7 Therefore, neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who causes the growth. 8 The one who plants and the one who waters are equal, and each will receive wages in proportion to his labor. 9 For we are God’s co-workers; you are God’s field, God’s building.

P S A L M

Psalm 33:12-13, 14-15, 20-21
R: Blessed the people the Lord has chosen to be his own.
12 Blessed the nation whose God is the LORD, the people he has chosen for his own inheritance. 13 From heaven the LORD looks down; he sees all mankind. (R) 14 From his fixed throne he beholds all who dwell on the earth, 15 he who fashioned the heart of each, he who knows all their works. (R) 20 Our soul waits for the LORD, who is our help and our shield, 21 for in him our hearts rejoice; in his holy name we trust. (R)

G O S P E L

Healing the sick is one of the signs expected to accompany the coming of the Messiah. Jesus’ life of ministry certainly fits the bill here. I wonder how well the Church lives this reality today. We are very good at caring for the sick. Many hospitals around the world are run by the Church, but do we have the faith to pray for the miracle of healing the sick? There are times when we are too hesitant, maybe lacking in faith, and fail to pray for healing when we could.

Luke 4:38-44
38 After Jesus left the synagogue, he entered the house of Simon. Simon’s mother-in-law was afflicted with a severe fever, and they interceded with him about her. 39 He stood over her, rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up immediately and waited on them. 40 At sunset, all who had people sick with various diseases brought them to him. He laid his hands on each of them and cured them. 41 And demons also came out from many, shouting, “You are the Son of God.” But he rebuked them and did not allow them to speak because they knew that he was the Messiah. 42 At daybreak, Jesus left and went to a deserted  place. The crowds went looking for him, and when they came to him, they tried to prevent him from leaving them. 43 But he said to them, “To the other towns also I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God, because for this purpose I have been sent.” 44 And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.

my reflections
think: lIt is Jesus who saves and the Holy Spirit who brings the growth.

Soul Food , Anyone ?

A young boy approached his old wise pastor about his struggle with purity. “I’m getting frustrated, Father,” he said, “I’ve been having problems with impure thoughts for as long as I can remember.” He continued, “Sometimes I feel there are two wolves fighting within me, pulling me into different directions, one towards the good and the other towards the bad. How do I know who will win?” The pastor simply replied, “The one you are constantly feeding.”
The pastor’s advice was profound yet practical. Those who live according to the flesh constantly feed the flesh to the neglect of the Spirit. Those who live according to the Spirit feed themselves with food that nourishes the soul as well.
This is what Paul means in today’s first reading, when he chastises the community at Corinth for their childish ways and the constant divisions brought about by jealousy. Paul reminds them to live according to the dignity they have been given in Christ, to live in the spirit and not be men and women of the flesh.
Let us note, however, that when Paul speaks of living according to the Spirit, he does not mean that the flesh is the principle of evil and is essentially opposed to the spirit. To live according to the Spirit means that the flesh is permeated by the Spirit, the flesh living in harmony and not in opposition with the Spirit. How does this happen?
I once read a documentary that compared eagles with vultures. It said that eagles feed only on live things while vultures feed on dead things, mostly the decaying remains of dead animals. This is the reason why vultures do not fly high. They constantly feed on things that are dead. On the contrary, eagles soar high up to heaven. Fr. Joel O. Jason

Reflection Question:
1. Do you feed yourself regularly with soul food, i.e, food that nourishes your spirit? How often do you nourish yourself with God’s Word, with prayer and with the Eucharist? 2. Have you identified the “dead” things that are present in your diet?

Lord Jesus, enkindle in me a hunger for You, the Bread of Life. Give me the strength of will to eliminate the “dead” things in my diet — sin, vice and the love for inordinate pleasure — that I may soar like an eagle to the heavens. Amen.

St. Beatrice da Silva Meneses, pray for us.

our ama zing brain

But we have the mind of Christ. – 1 Corinthians 2:16

I remember the first personal computer our family ever had. It was an Apple that had a RAM of 4 kilobytes. It ran on floppy disks that could hold 360 kilobytes of information. Let me put this in easier terms. At any one time, that computer could only hold information equivalent to two pages of typed, double-spaced text. That’s why it couldn’t even keep programs in its memory. We had to run a program from a 5 ¼ disk and replace it with a data disk when we had to save our file.
What a far cry from the computers we use today! Now we talk in terms of gigabytes (1 million kilobytes) and soon, in terabytes (1,000 gigabytes).
Now think of this: the human brain is estimated to have the storage capacity 500 to 1,000 terabytes! And that’s just for an ordinary, average person. We have not yet begun to explore the limits of our own mind.
Now meditate on this: We have the mind of Christ.
Mind-boggling, huh, but true. Believe it and use it! Rissa Singson-Kawpeng (justbreatherissa@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
We give credit to human wisdom when we should give credit to the divine guidance of God being exhibited through childlike people who were “foolish” enough to trust God’s wisdom and His supernatural equipment.

Lord, let me use the wisdom You give me as I live my life every day.

1st READING

To be a truly spiritual person one has to be open to the influence and guidance of the Holy Spirit. This means admitting that the wisdom of humanity is not enough to bring meaning to one’s life. The world cannot offer the same satisfaction that a life of faith offers. The world can only offer us death as an end whereas God offers us eternity with Him.

1 Corinthians 2:10b-16
10 Brothers and sisters: The Spirit scrutinizes everything, even the depths of God. 11 Among human beings, who knows what pertains to a person except the spirit of the person that is within? Similarly, no one knows what pertains to God except the Spirit of God. 12 We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit that is from God, so that we may understand the things freely given us by God. 13 And we speak about them not with words taught by human wisdom, but with words taught by the Spirit, describing spiritual realities in spiritual terms. 14 Now the natural person does not accept what pertains to the Spirit of God, for to him it is foolishness, and he cannot understand it, because it is judged spiritually. 15 The spiritual person, however, can judge everything but is not subject to judgment by anyone. 16 For “who has known the mind of the Lord, so as to counsel him?” But we have the mind of Christ.

P S A L M

Psalm 145:8-9, 10-11, 12-13ab, 13cd-14
R: The Lord is just in all his ways.
8 The LORD is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and of great kindness. 9 The LORD is good to all and compassionate toward all his works. (R) 10 Let all your works give you thanks, O LORD, and let your faithful ones bless you. 11 Let them discourse of the glory of your kingdom and speak of your might. (R) 12 Making known to men your might and the glorious splendor of your kingdom. 13 Your kingdom is a kingdom for all ages, and your dominion endures through all generations. (R) The LORD is faithful in all his words and holy in all his works. 14 The LORD lifts up all who are falling and raises up all who are bowed down. (R)

G O S P E L

The authority of Jesus amazed the people of His time, especially those who thought they were the ones that were supposed to have authority. And therein lies one of the paradoxes of the Gospel — God uses the small to shame those who think they are important. So often in the Gospels it is the underdog who wins out in the end. Let us remember that it is not whether we are big or powerful in this world that matters; rather it is whether or not we stand with God that will make the difference.

Luke 4:31-37
31 Jesus then went down to Capernaum, a town of Galilee. He taught them on the sabbath, 32 and they were astonished at his teaching because he spoke with authority. 33 In the synagogue there was a man with the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out in a loud voice, 34 “Ha! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are — the Holy One of God!” 35 Jesus rebuked him and said, “Be quiet! Come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down in front of them and came out of him without doing him any harm. 36 They were all amazed and said to one another, “What is there about his word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.” 37 And news of him spread everywhere in the surrounding region.

my reflections
t h i n k : To be a truly spiritual person, one has to be open to the influence and guidance of the Holy Spirit.

SABBATH

LIGHT AND DARKNESS

Early risers appreciate the morning — it’s a wonderful part of the day when dawn breaks forth and the first rays of the sun catch the tall trees glistening after the night moisture. If ever I am up at that time, I appreciate these times of God’s glory. We all know the power of the sun to illumine the day, the soft light of the moon at night. Scripture is flooded with these two images of darkness and light.
Light overshadows darkness and that is precisely what happens when Jesus the Son of God is in town. Even the demons shudder as they are exposed to the brilliant light of the Son. They scream and call out, knowing that their reign of darkness has been conquered by the light of Jesus’ coming. Jesus speaks in the power of light and acts in the light. All that comes to Him is exposed by the light of day.
The image of darkness and light is also within us. Anyone who sins lives in darkness. Anyone who seeks to follow the teachings of Jesus in obedience and faith will always have the light of life. We need to be constantly vigilant in prayer, sacraments, reading and spiritual direction in order to remain in the light. It is a good thing every day to examine our conscience and enhance our discernment between darkness and light — to see what spirit is operating at our lives, whether good or bad. We owe our lives to Jesus who has delivered us from the darkness of sin and transferred us to the Kingdom of light. Fr. Brian Steele, MGL

Reflection Question:
What are the areas of darkness in your life? Expose them to the Lord for healing and grace so that His light may overcome the darkness within you.

Lord, You are brilliant light to a world in darkness. You are the Son who has rays of mercy and love. Illumine and enlighten me with the power of Your Holy Spirit. May I always live as a child of the light. Amen.

St. Dominic del Val, pray for us.

“THE UNLIKELY VESSEL”

... and my message and proclamation were not with persuasive (words of) wisdom, but with demonstration of spirit and power. – 1 Corinthians 2:4

Hillsong Conference was drawing to a close that winter of 2007 in Sydney. A dozen heavyweight speakers from different parts of the world took turns on the pulpit before a 10,000-strong audience. As the night progressed, the people got bored and couldn’t wait for the proceedings to end. Then at last, an odd-looking black guy, possessing an image far different from the other speakers who came before him, made his way to the pulpit. Everyone was dumbfounded. The guy, due to his lack of “charm” and high profile, spoke of how intimidated and terrified he was to come after all the brilliant speakers. He went to tell of how much the Holy Spirit reassured and humbled Him to just proceed in sharing the truth of God’s Word. He sang and spoke in layman’s language and slang, presented his life in amusing circumstances and made fun of himself to the delight of the people. Then he closed and blessed the crowd.
In the end, the audience got what they needed that cold night to bring home to their loved ones — warmth of God’s powerful words through the person of TD Jakes.Eugene Cailao (eugenecailao@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
How much of God’s wisdom and power do I allow to work in my life?

Grant me the grace to seek You constantly, Lord. To allow You to work Your way through my life and make it a powerful testament of Your wisdom and glory. Amen.

It is important that we learn how to place our lives under the grace and power of the Holy Spirit so that what we do for the Kingdom of God will be built on God and not on the shifting sands of our own wisdom and talents. The key to doing this is humility. We need to entrust our lives to the will of God, understanding that His will is the best way for us. We may not always understand His ways, but they will always be better than our own.

1 Corinthians 2:1-5
1 When I came to you, brothers and sisters, proclaiming the mystery of God, I did not come with sublimity of words or of wisdom. 2 For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified. 3 I came to you in weakness and fear and much trembling, 4 and my message and my proclamation were not with persuasive words of wisdom, but with a demonstration of spirit and power, 5 so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God.

Psalm 119:97, 98, 99, 100, 101, 102
R: Lord, I love your commands.
97 How I love your law, O LORD! It is my meditation all the day. (R) 98 Your command has made me wiser than my enemies, for it is ever with me. (R) 99 I have more understanding than all my teachers when your decrees are my meditation. (R) 100 I have more discernment than the elders, because I observe your precepts. (R) 101 From every evil way I withhold my feet, that I may keep your words. (R) 102 From your ordinances I turn not away, for you have instructed me. (R)

This is like preparing a mission statement for your life. Jesus takes the scroll of Isaiah and proclaims to all in the synagogue His mission in life. Read it again and see that Jesus holds nothing back. The world and the Church needs men and women who are as equally committed to the call God has on their lives.

Luke 4:16-30
16 Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had grown up, and went according to his custom into the synagogue on the sabbath day. He stood up to read 17 and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written: 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, 19 and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.” 20 Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him. 21 He said to them, “Today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.” 22 And all spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They also asked, “Isn’t this the son of Joseph?” 23 He said to them, “Surely you will quote me this proverb, ‘Physician, cure yourself,’ and say, ‘Do here in your native place the things that we heard were done in Capernaum.’ ” 24 And he said, “Amen, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own native place. 25 Indeed, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah when the sky was closed for three and a half years and a severe famine spread over the entire land. 26 It was to none of these that Elijah was sent, but only to a widow in Zarephath in the land of Sidon. 27 Again, there were many lepers in Israel during the time of Elisha the prophet; yet not one of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.” 28 When the people in the synagogue heard this, they were all filled with fury. 29 They rose up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town had been built, to hurl him down headlong. 30 But he passed through the midst of them and went away.

my reflections
t h i n k : The world and the Church needs men and women who are as equally committed as Jesus to the call God has on their lives.

TAKE UP THE CHALLENGE

The synagogue was a central place in the Jewish religious culture. There, people would go to hear the Word of God proclaimed and expounded. It was an important aspect of Jewish culture. Our Sunday Eucharist had its humble beginnings through the practice of synagogue worship. The rabbis would gather the faithful and expound sound doctrine. There was time for discussion and worship. People would come with great expectation to hear the Word from the holy Rabbi as if God Himself was speaking.
How odd it must have been this day to hear Jesus simply say, “Today this passage is fulfilled in your hearing.” Gracious words indeed! Did Jesus really know what He was saying? Was that all He had to say? Did He mean what He said? There was an awe that spread through the synagogue. But that soon changed to indignation as they heard that challenge from the lips of Jesus to them. Jesus reiterates stories of people and prophets with the view to awaken their senses. Their senses were awakened and inflamed as they intended to hurl him down.
Sometimes it seems OK when we hear the nice words, the gracious words. But whenever we are challenged, there is always something that rises within for revenge at any accusation, good or bad. We don’t like to be challenged. We know it’s good but, in a sense, it is awkward. We see ourselves for who we really are, like the townsfolk in Jesus’ village. They were listening to His kind words of inspiration, then, having been challenged, they were quick to judge and reject this newcomer in their midst. “We know him, the son of a carpenter!”
Let us take up the challenge to hear the Word of God and practice it. Let us respond in faith and confidence to the will of God in our lives. Let us not be angry or resentful that we are challenged but embrace it as a call of the Lord to grow and develop in our lives. Fr. Brian Steele, MGL

Reflection Question:
Where do we feel challenged by the Lord? Where in our lives is the passage of Scripture being fulfilled?

Lord, let Your Spirit anoint me. Remove the blindness from my eyes and set me free that I might be Your eyes and love to others. Amen.

Blessed Edward Shelley, pray for us.
