SIMPLY WISE

“…for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them…” – Matthew 11:25

I remember the tension and the sleepless nights my group mates and I had when we did our college thesis. But when our defense came, we were ready.
One of my group mates introduced our thesis entitled “The Portable Multi-Tester.” The all-in-one tester could measure voltage, resistance, etc. We were becoming increasingly confident as we saw the panel nodding their heads. Then the question and answer portion came. One of the panelists asked a critical question. “Your thesis is a tester that is used to test current from outlets but the title of your thesis is ‘Portable Multi-Tester.’ If it’s portable, why do you need to plug it to a current to be able to use it?”
We looked at each other. Why did we even call it portable? The brightest in our group couldn’t answer. Because of our title, our professor’s initial verdict was that we needed major revisions in our thesis. We were devastated. That’s almost like a failing mark! Then I said, “Sir, do you have a portable TV? Why do you call it portable even if you need to plug it? That‘s why even if we need to plug it, we called ours portable.” We were asked to make minor revisions instead.Arun Gogna (gognaa1@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
Is there any question in your mind now that you feel you need God’s counsel for the answer?

Help me to grow in wisdom, Lord. May I seek You in all I think, say and do.

COMPANION

1st READING

God is not impressed with Israel’s attitude of self-sufficiency and their distancing themselves from Him. The last verse or so of today’s text makes this very clear. These are fundamental sins, as alive today as they have ever been. We need to be conscious of this and seek to move in the opposite spirit so that we will grow in dependence on God and holiness.
Isaiah 10:5-7, 13b-16
5 Thus says the LORD: Woe to Assyria! My rod in anger, my staff in wrath. 6 Against an impious nation I send him, and against a people under my wrath I order him to seize plunder, carry off loot, and tread them down like the mud of the streets. 7 But this is not what he intends, nor does he have this in mind; rather, it is in his heart to destroy, to make an end of nations not a few. 13 For he says: “By my own power I have done it, and by my wisdom, for I am shrewd. I have moved the boundaries of peoples, their treasures I have pillaged, and, like a giant, I have put down the enthroned. 14 My hand has seized like a nest the riches of nations; as one takes eggs left alone, so I took in all the earth; no one fluttered a wing, or opened a mouth, or chirped!” 15 Will the axe boast against him who hews with it? Will the saw exalt itself above him who wields it? As if a rod could sway him who lifts it, or a staff him who is not wood! 16 Therefore the Lord, the LORD of hosts, will send among his fat ones leanness, and instead of his glory there will be kindling like the kindling of fire.

P S A L M

Psalm 94:5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 14-15
R: The Lord will not abandon his people.
5 Your people, O LORD, they trample down, your inheritance they afflict. 6 Widow and stranger they slay, the fatherless they murder. (R) 7 And they say, “The LORD sees not; the God of Jacob perceives not.” 8 Understand, you senseless ones among the people; and, you fools, when will you be wise? (R) 9 Shall he who shaped the ear not hear? or he who formed the eye not see? 10 Shall he who instructs nations not chastise, he who teaches men knowledge? (R) 14 For the LORD will not cast off his people, nor abandon his inheritance; 15 but judgment shall again be with justice, and all the upright of heart shall follow it. (R)

G O S P E L

Some of the mysteries of the Kingdom of God and its true nature are best understood with simplicity of heart and mind as though we are children. Sometimes it is better to simply accept the mystery surrounding God and His actions than trying to understand them as the mind and heart of God are often beyond our understanding anyway! There were times when we just trusted that our parents knew best and got on with life; surely we can accept that most times we should relate to God in this way, too!

Matthew 11:25-27
25 At that time Jesus exclaimed: “I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the childlike. 26 Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will. 27 All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him.”

my reflections
t h i n k : Some of the mysteries of the Kingdom of God and its true nature are best understood with simplicity of heart and mind as though we are children.

SABBATH

GOD: SIMPLE OR COMPLEX BEING?

One of the great dilemmas of Christianity is that its theology is so complex, yet the call to be a Christian is so simple. Why the disparity between the two? It is because God caters to all types of people. There are some who are satisfied with a simple understanding of God and the call to do His will is simply that — discern what God wants you to do and then do it. However, there are others who are more interested in plumbing the depths of the nature o f God and His relationship with us, His creation, and they will not settle for anything less than the best understanding they can get. Is one the right way and the other the wrong way? No. Each of us is created as an individual and no two relationships with God are ever going to be the same. It is similar to how some people are happy to put the key in the ignition and drive the car, and others want to pull the engine apart and figure out how it works. One of the critical things to remember is that it is up to the individual to direct the nature of his or her relationship with God — it is not up to us to say what it should be for someone else.
Jesus calls us to entrust ourselves to His mercy and grace and He will give us rest. Taken literally, this is a very comforting promise and we should take it at face value and entrust all to God. However, this does not absolve us of responsibility to work out our salvation in fear and trembling as Paul tells us in his epistles. There is always a fine line between two heresies at either side of the spectrum and it is here that the life of discipleship lies.
Yes, salvation is a free gift coming from God but it is a gift that is not without consequences for our life. Discipleship is never going to be easy or smooth sailing, so to speak. We will have our struggles and trials as we seek to implement God’s will in our lives. It is precisely at this point that we need to hear God’s call to rest in Him and let His grace work in our lives. Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
Do I have a problem with entrusting my will to God’s will and giving Him priority in my life?

Holy Spirit, help me to understand that God’s will is the path of perfection for me and that I should never be afraid to entrust everything to Him.

Blessed Richard Langhorne, pray for us.
