Can I not do to you, house of Israel, as this potter has done? says the Lord. Indeed, like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, house of Israel. – Jeremiah 18:6
 
“Lord, I am unworthy of Your love! I am a sinful person!” A newly baptized sister in our community cried profusely as we prayed for her. We whispered in her ears that our God is a merciful God. He knows all our faults and weaknesses and forgives us when we repent. He gives us the grace to stay away from sin if we ask for it.
I have encountered people who feel unworthy of joining renewal communities because they think they have committed the worst sins in their lives. But we are all unworthy; it is God who, in His infinite kindness and love, makes us worthy to receive His gifts. What is needed is for us to repent of all our sins.
We are all “works in progress” in God’s hands. Just like the clay in the potter’s hands, whenever we do not turn out to be what He wants us to be, He continues working on us and molding us. What is needed is for us to yield to God’s leading and to pray for delivery from the bondage of sin and wrongdoing. Bay Cabrera (baycabrera@yahoo.com)

Do we seek God’s mercy whenever we are tempted to fall into sin?
 
Lord, grant me the grace to surrender myself to Your molding.

1st READING
 
The epistle of love, as it is sometimes called, exhorts us to love as Christ has first loved us. Jesus did not wait for us to become good before He loved us, nor did He wait until we sinned no more. He died while we were sinners to prove that His love for us was of the highest kind possible — unconditional. Let us pray for the grace to love one another in the same way.
 
1 John 4:7-16 (or Jeremiah 18:1-6)
7 Beloved, let us love one another, because love is of God; everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God. 8 Whoever is without love does not know God, for God is love. 9 In this way the love of God was revealed to us: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might have life through him. 10 In this is love: not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as expiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also must love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God. Yet, if we love one another, God remains in us, and his love is brought to perfection in us. 13 This is how we know that we remain in him and he in us, that he has given us of his Spirit. 14 Moreover, we have seen and testify that the Father sent his Son as savior of the world. 15 Whoever acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God remains in him and he in God. 16 We have come to know and to believe in the love God has for us. Martha has great faith. How does yours compare with hers? So often our faith is lacking. This should not lead us to despair, as that is a sin. Rather it should inspire us to pray for a deeper and stronger faith. Faith is a gift of the Holy Spirit that we need to earnestly desire and seek. If we do not ask for it, we probably won’t get it.

19 And many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother. 20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him; but Mary sat at home. 21 Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 [But] even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you.” 23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise.” 24 Martha said to him, “I know he will rise, in the resurrection on the last day.” 25 Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” 27 She said to him, “Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world.”

I AM THE RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE
 
Jesus arrives only to find that Lazarus has already died. Martha then makes an interesting comment when she speaks to Jesus saying that she does not believe he would have died if Jesus had come earlier. She does not seem to be accusing Jesus of anything, just recognizing that His presence would have made a difference for Lazarus. We see a latent faith in the resurrection that Jesus draws out and makes explicit. He then calls out to Lazarus and raises him from the dead!
Jesus is not just all about words and pious platitudes — He has the power to transform a situation in ways that no man before Him has ever demonstrated. It is a miracle such as this one that gives credence to the claim that Jesus was raised from the dead by the Father. If Jesus can raise Lazarus from the dead, then it takes only a simple step to believe that God the Father has the power to do the same for His Son, Jesus.
It is important that we reflect upon the hope of the resurrection as it is this belief that sets Christianity apart from other religions. It is an extraordinary belief to put one’s life under its promise. Yet this is what our faith demands of us: belief in the impossible and trust in that which seems highly improbable. Perhaps it is not such a strange thing to demand when we consider that 99 percent of those who use computers would find it impossible to explain how it works. Yet we are quite willing to entrust our lives to computers in many different ways. With God, at least it is possible to have a relationship; with the computer, this is definitely not the case.
Martha expresses her belief in the resurrection and Jesus tells her that it is through Him, Who is the resurrection and the life, that she will experience the resurrection. This is both now, in the life of Lazarus, and later when she passes from this life. Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL
 
Reflection Question:
How does my belief in the resurrection from the dead govern the way I make choices and live my life?
 
Father, thank You for the promise of the resurrection. Help me to be so inspired by this promise that I will never hesitate to be obedient to all You ask of me.
