BLESSED BY A SINNER

Is it not you alone, O Lord, our God, to whom we look? You alone have done all these things. – Jeremiah 14:22

I shook the hand of a murderer.
The old man with the tender stare who spoke humbly. No one would have thought he was capable of killing people.
Mang Pilo (not his real name) was a hit man in his younger days. With a pregnant wife and one child, he earned a living as a hired killer from Tondo. He was later caught and put behind bars. Like many convicts, he found God again in prison. He recalled growing up in a Catholic school and reviewed the sinful life he led as an adult. He realized that he didn’t want his children to suffer the same fate. And so, when he was released after six years for good conduct, he went on to live a God-fearing life.
Through his wife and their parish priest, Mang Pilo found his purpose. He has since been ministering to prisoners in different jails, bringing to them the message of hope that God’s love and mercy renew broken spirits.
Listening to Mang Pilo’s testimony made me cry. He kept telling me that he was blessed to have met me. But really, I was the one he blessed.
When we put our hope in God, He keeps His promise that we will find rest in Him. Nova Arias (nova.svp@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
We are all sinners in God’s eyes. But with mercy He sees the goodness in our hearts. There is hope for us in God.

I put my hope in You, Lord, today and always. Remind me that beautiful days are ahead, for You are with me.

COMPANION

1st READING

Is there any among the false gods of the nations that can bring rain? The resounding answer to this is “NO!” Of course only the God of Life can bring blessings to His people. How long will it take Israel or us to learn this truth? A very long time, or so it seems. Even today we are still offering up the sacrifice of our lives to all sorts of different gods — sports, sex, drugs, pleasure of all kinds and so on. When is it going to end?

Jeremiah 14:17-22
17 Let my eyes stream with tears day and night, without rest, over the great destruction which overwhelms the virgin daughter of my people, over her incurable wound. 18 If I walk out into the field, look! those slain by the sword; if I enter the city, look! those consumed by hunger. Even the prophet and the priest forage in a land they know not. 19 Have you cast Judah off completely? Is Zion loathsome to you? Why have you struck us a blow that cannot be healed? We wait for peace, to no avail; for a time of healing, but terror comes instead. 20 We recognize, O LORD, our wickedness, the guilt of our fathers; that we have sinned against you. 21 For your name’s sake spurn us not, disgrace not the throne of your glory; remember your covenant with us, and break it not. 22 Among the nations’ idols is there any that gives rain? Or can the mere heavens send showers? Is it not you alone, O LORD, our God, to whom we look? You alone have done all these things.

Psalm 79:8, 9, 11, 13
R: For the glory of your name, O Lord, deliver us.
8 Remember not against us the iniquities of the past; may your compassion quickly come to us, for we are brought very low. (R) 9 Help us, O God our savior, because of the glory of your name; deliver us and pardon our sins for your name’s sake. (R) 11 Let the prisoners’ sighing come before you; with your great power free those doomed to death. 13 Then we, your people and the sheep of your pasture, will give thanks to you forever; through all generations we will declare your praise. (R)

G O S P E L
Jesus’ explanation of the parable of the weeds among the wheat is quite easy to understand. Are we going to respond to it? What are the weeds that are flourishing in your life? How is the Gospel life being compromised by sin in your life? We need to ask these questions and others like them daily. It is only by doing this that we will become aware enough of our sinfulness to repent and change. Conversion is the key to holiness but how can we be converted if we are not aware of our sins?

Matthew 13:36-43
36 Jesus dismissed the crowds and went into the house. His disciples approached him and said, “Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field.” 37 He said in reply, “He who sows good seed is the Son of Man, 38 the field is the world, the good seed the children of the kingdom. The weeds are the children of the evil one, 39 and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels. 40 Just as weeds are collected and burned up with fire, so will it be at the end of the age. 41 The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will collect out of his kingdom all who cause others to sin and all evildoers. 42 They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth. 43 Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Whoever has ears ought to hear.”

my reflections
t h i n k : Conversion is the key to holiness but how can we be converted if we are not aware of our sins?

SABBATH

DESIRED AND UNDESIRED EFFECTS

All of us have probably experienced being caught in the dilemma of having to choose a particular course of action that will bring about results, both desired and undesired. It is part of living in an imperfect world where sin exists and still wreaks havoc in the lives of men and women. Yes, there are times when we are happy with the consequences of a particular action. Let us pray that these types of situations increase and the former types decrease.
The moral life is rarely completely black or completely white; there are many shades of grey owing to the variety of circumstances and the life situations of the individuals. However, we live in a world where there are no moral absolutes. God has given us a clear moral direction in our humanity and it is this truth of our personhood that guides us along the path of righteousness. The truth of the human person can be known by everyone and is not so obscure as to be that difficult to discover and understand. We are called to be diligent and untiring in our search for the truth, particularly moral truth, as the way we act determines our character. It creates us to be the people we are and hence plays an enormous part in our Christian witness.
If we doubt how we should act in a particular moral situation, we should defer to the teaching of the Church or refrain from acting until we have  reached a reasonable degree of certainty that what we are about to do is the correct thing. Too many times today we see people deciding on moral issues through emotional arguments that rarely plumb the depths of truth. Sometimes the right answer can be achieved, but not often enough. We must be willing to scrutinize our moral situations with the gift of our reason and search out the truth according to the mind of God. Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
How well do I understand the moral teaching of the Church? Do I need to seek out a deeper understanding of the issues that affect my life?

Holy Spirit, lead and guide me in the ways of truth. Help me to never be satisfied until I have discovered the truth of the matter at hand.

Sts. Natalie & Aurelius, pray for us.
