Feast of St. Thomas, Apostle

“... but you are fellow citizens with the holy ones and members of the household of God.” – Ephesians 2:19

In the kerygmafamily.com/forum was a cry for help. “My sister, who is INC (Iglesia ni Cristo), is debating with me that I’m not saved.” It was followed by someone who said, “Discuss it with her.” Another said, “In my experience, you can’t reason with the INC; they’re illogical.”
But what really got my attention was a post with a long list of complaints that the INC held against the Catholics. It was then followed by another posting with explanations of each complaint and the Catholic response based on the Bible, history and church documents. To me these messages are a fulfilment of what the passage above and Ephesians 2:22 say, “But you are also being built into a dwelling place of God.”
Even if it’s just an Internet forum — where most people haven’t even met each other physically — I can feel that the Kingdom of God is alive and well online. Believers support each other and encourage one another in their trials through their advice. They share their faith to build up others.
Yes, it is truly a community. Jomar Hilario (jomar.hilario@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
How are you supporting others in their faith walk?

Lord, use me to build up Your body. Amen.

COMPANION

1st READING

We all need to remember that we are only passing through the earth on our journey through life. We need to avoid getting too attached to things here as they distract us in our faith in God. Our minds and intellect can be the biggest distraction if we allow it to become proud and haughty due to acquired knowledge. It is important that we allow our faith the freedom to believe without having to test everything all the time.

Ephesians 2:19-22
19 Brothers and sisters: You are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the holy ones and members of the household of God, 20 built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the capstone. 21 Through him the whole structure is held together and grows into a temple sacred in the Lord; 22 in him you also are being built together into a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.

Psalm 117:1bc, 2
R: Go out to all the world and tell the Good News.
1 Praise the LORD, all you nations; glorify him, all you peoples! (R) 2 For steadfast is his kindness toward us, and the fdelity of the LORD endures forever. (R)

G O S P E L

The apostle Thomas is a very likeable chap — he is so real. I find him relatively easy to relate to because he says how he feels. I reckon he was annoyed that he was not there when Jesus first appears to the apostles and his reluctance to believe was more of annoyance than disbelief. How would you react in his situation?

John 20:24-29
24 Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples said to him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nailmarks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” 26 Now a week later his disciples were again inside and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, although the doors were locked, and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe.” 28 Thomas answered and said to him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus said to him, “Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.

SABBATH

THE TRAGEDY OF MISUNDERSTANDING

St. Thomas the Apostle is probably one of the most misunderstood characters in all of the Scriptures. He is dubbed as “the doubter,” which is probably an unfair label to ascribe to him. Put yourself in his shoes and ask yourself how you would have responded to the claim that Jesus had risen from the dead. It is not as if rising from the dead was a common occurrence. I think I would have reacted similarly, thinking that the others were having a bit of fun at my expense.
What can we learn from all this? I think it is to never underestimate the power of God to do the unexpected. Yes, Jesus had mentioned to His disciples that He was going to rise from the dead but it is fairly clear from the Gospels that the disciples did not really understand what Jesus was telling them. Jesus proceeds with His plan and leaves the disciples to work out, with the grace and assistance of the Holy Spirit, how they will respond to the fact of the resurrection.
One of the strongest secular arguments about the resurrection is that it is such a ridiculous position to take and only the insane would try and defend the seemingly indefensible. Yet this is what the disciples chose to do. They proclaimed a Risen Lord Jesus and not just a Crucified Christ. This extraordinary doctrine then spread like fire under the patronage of such great evangelizers as Paul and many others. The seemingly ridiculous message was taken on by thousands and eventually millions. Why? Because of the innate power of the truth.
The truth goes into the heart of a person and will not leave it no matter how much one tries to deny it. It is the truth the disciples proclaimed and as Jesus told them, it is the truth that allows us to live freely and fully.
One of the saddest sights in today’s world is watching people living a half-life existence because they refuse to acknowledge the truth. Let us pray that we will never be counted among their ranks.Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
Do I live the truth of the resurrection without compromise, or has the world’s way of thinking infiltrated my life to the point that it is stunted by untruth?

Holy Spirit, come and enlighten my mind and heart so that I will know the truth and be free to live it every day of my life.

St. Anatolius, pray for us.
