JOB WOES

“A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not quench, until he brings justice to victory. “ – Matthew 12:20

There was a time, while working for my old job, when I thought that I deserved what I was doing. I thought that since I was a fresh graduate and didn’t have enough experience to back me up, I had no right to be choosy.
The job wasn’t bad, really. It was just that I wasn’t doing what I wanted to do. But I wanted to follow God’s will, and if that meant that I had to stay there, then I would. I really meant it, but at the back of my mind, I cried at the possibility that God would want me to stay there forever. I kicked, fought and struggled with that thought, looking for new jobs that I might like and saying not-so-good things about my job, until finally I surrendered. My prayer changed from “I want to get out of here” to “Help me to see You here.”
Then one day, after I decided to give it all to Him so He could move, God showed me the way. It wasn’t much of a clear path at first, just a possible job I could apply for, but He led me every step of the way. Before I knew it, I had a new job — and one that I liked!Tina Matanguihan (tina.matanguihan@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
“… And after you have suffered a little, He will bring you to perfection.” (1 Peter 5:10)

Lord, help me to remember that You want the best for me.

COMPANION

1st READING

Micah is a contemporary of both Amos and Isaiah. He is also particularly concerned with those who live the “good life” with little or no concern for the poor and suffering. God does not bless a person without also giving him the moral responsibility and duty to use those blessings to help others. The rich like to bless each other, as they know there will be blessings in return. How selfish can one get? We need to ensure that we do not fall into this trap of material acquisitiveness.

Micah 2:1-5
1 Woe to those who plan iniquity, and work out evil on their couches; in the morning light they accomplish it when it lies within their power. 2 They covet fields, and seize them; houses, and they take them; they cheat an owner of his house, a man of his inheritance. 3 Therefore thus says the LORD: Behold, I am planning against this race an evil from which you shall not withdraw your necks; nor shall you walk with head high, for it will be a time of evil. 4 On that day a satire shall be sung over you, and there shall be a plaintive chant: “Our ruin is complete, our fields are portioned out among our captors, the fields of my people are measured out, and no one can get them back!” 5 Thus you shall have no one to mark out boundaries by lot in the assembly of the LORD.

P S A L M

Psalm 10:1-2, 3-4, 7-8, 14
R: Do not forget the poor, O Lord.
1 Why, O LORD, do you stand aloof? Why hide in times of distress? 2 Proudly the wicked harass the afflicted, who are caught in the devices the wicked have contrived. (R) 3 For the wicked man glories in his greed, and the covetous blasphemes, sets the LORD at nought. 4 The wicked man boasts, “He will not avenge it”; “There is no God,” sums up his thoughts. (R) 7 His mouth is full of cursing, guile and deceit; under his tongue are mischief and iniquity. 8 He lurks in ambush near the villages; in hiding he murders the innocent; his eyes spy upon the unfortunate. (R) 14 You do see, for you behold misery and sorrow, taking them in your hands. On you the unfortunate man depends; of the fatherless you are the helper. (R)

G O S P E L

We are told explicitly that there are men plotting against Jesus. We are all aware that Satan is at work in our lives and the world to destroy us. We need to be alert to his strategies and works so that we can recognize and reject them. We need to learn how to discern his hand so that we can run in the opposite direction and seek the help of the Holy Spirit to overcome his work.

Matthew 12:14-21
14 The Pharisees went out and took counsel against Jesus to put him to death. 15 When Jesus realized this, he withdrew from that place. Many people followed him, and he cured them all, 16 but he warned them not to make him known. 17 This was to fulfill what had been spoken through Isaiah the prophet: 18 “Behold, my servant whom I have chosen, my beloved in whom I delight; I shall place my spirit upon him, and he will proclaim justice to the Gentiles. 19 He will not contend or cry out, nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets. 20 A bruised reed he will not break, a smoldering wick he will not quench, until he brings justice to victory. 21 And in his name the Gentiles will hope.”

my reflections
t h i n k : We need to learn how to discern the work of Satan’s hands in our daily lives so we can run in the opposite direction and seek the help of the- Holy Spirit to overcome his work.

SABBATH

NOT QUENCHING A SMOLDERING WICK

I love the image of a smoldering wick. We have all experienced struggling to keep a candle alive when it seems that it just does not want to burn. This can be likened to the faith of a person struggling to believe for one reason or another. Among our challenges as Christians is to be on the lookout for those who are struggling in our midst. Sometimes people simply lose their faith or slip out of the faith community unnoticed because we are not sensitive enough to what they may be going through.
Perhaps we might argue that we, too, are struggling with our faith in an ever more hostile world, but that is not an excuse. In fact, we should even be more attentive to those who are going through the same struggles as we do so that we can either help them or be inspired by them.
In the Gospels, Jesus seems to be drawn to the “little ones” (anawim). Their concerns are never too small for Him to address. We need to imitate this concern and love of Jesus for His people as we relate to one another in our communities. Even if we look at this issue from a purely resource-based solution, it is far less costly to maintain a person’s faith through good care, than to have to disciple a person from scratch — that is to evangelize them and then lead them to a mature faith.
Church leaders need to be aware and to be sensitive to those who are struggling in their faith and provide the means to help them persevere. A person whose faith has been tested in the fires of purification and suffering will be a great asset to the community when they pull through. Iron is hardened into steel through the addition of carbon and further firing; likewise our faith is strengthened and deepened through our experience of struggle and purification. Let us never neglect those who struggle. It is only a matter of time and support until they will become an even greater asset to our community.Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
Am I struggling in my faith? Have I asked others for support and help? Do I seek to support those who may be struggling with their faith?

Holy Spirit, help me to develop a compassionate heart for those who are struggling so that I can support them and help them to persevere in their faith.

St. Marcellina, pray for us.
