Memorial of Mary Magdalene, disciple of the Lord

because of love

Mary of Magdala went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord.” – John 20:18

It was bad enough to be engaged in the flesh trade. What’s worse was that she was caught in the act. And just like a sex video scandal, she was exposed to the public for condemnation. But I wonder, how did Mary Magdalene take that cosmic leap from selling her flesh to being a staunch follower of Jesus?
I can think of only one thing. Because Someone loved her. Jesus loved her. That was all she needed to make a 180-degree turn from her old ways.
In my case, when I started attending The Feast, our weekly prayer gathering, I was happy to join the ushers ministry. But someone had a greater vision for me in the Light of Jesus Family that even I didn’t dream for myself. I was invited to join a discipleship course to raise up future leaders and servants in the community and, because of that, I’ve had a paradigm shift.
My focus is no longer limited to enjoying the Lord at The Feast. I now enjoy serving Him and ministering to others through music, leading others in worship and allowing Him to use me as His mighty, inspiring and fun-loving instrument to reach others. Carlo F. Lorenzo (cflorenzo@gmanetwork.com)

REFLECTION:
How can I love someone deep in sin the way Jesus loved Mary Magdalene?

Lord God, teach my heart to love wrongdoers, considering them sacred while hating the sin. Let my heart separate the sin from the sinner. Amen.

COMPANION

1st READING

The jealous love of a lover for his beloved is the love of God for each of us. How about your love for God? Does it go as deep as this? If not, what is holding you back? If it is sin or any other type of obstruction, you need to get rid of it. God has so much more for us than we know or have experienced from the world.

Jeremiah 2:1-3, 7-8, 12-13 (or Song of Songs 3:1-4b or 2 Corinthians 5:14-17)
1 This word of the LORD came to me: 2 Go, cry out this message for Jerusalem to hear! I remember the devotion of your youth, how you loved me as a bride, following me in the desert, in a land unsown. 3 Sacred to the LORD was Israel, the first fruits of his harvest; should anyone presume to partake of them, evil would befall him, says the LORD. 7 When I brought you into the garden land to eat its goodly fruits, you entered and defiled my land, you made my heritage loathsome. 8 The priests asked not, “Where is the LORD?” Those who dealt with the law knew me not: the shepherds rebelled against me. The prophets prophesied by Baal, and went after useless idols. 12 Be amazed at this, O heavens, and shudder with sheer horror, says the LORD. 13 Two evils have my people done: they have forsaken me, the source of living waters; they have dug themselves cisterns, broken cisterns, that hold no water.

Psalm 36:6-7ab, 8-9, 10-11 (or Psalm 63:2,3-4, 5-6, 8-9)
R: With you is the fountain of life, O Lord.
5 [6] O LORD, your mercy reaches to heaven; your faithfulness, to the clouds. 6 [7] Your justice is like the mountains of God; your judgments, like the mighty deep. (R) 7 [8] How precious is your  mercy, O God! The children of men take refuge in the shadow of your wings. 8 [9] They have their fill of the prime gifts of your house; from your delightful stream you give them to drink. (R) 9 [10] For with you is the fountain of life, and in your light we see light. 10 [11] Keep up your mercy toward your friends, your just defense of the upright of heart. (R)

The first person to proclaim the resurrection of Jesus was a woman. All of us are called to be evangelists. We just need to discover our gifts for evangelization and then use them at every opportunity. We should pray for the courage to proclaim the Gospel when the chance arises. God has changed our lives through the gift of salvation; let us be willing to offer that gift to others freely.

John 20:1-2, 11-18 (or Matthew 13:10-17)
1 On the first day of the week, Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning, while it was still dark, and saw the stone removed from the tomb. 2 So she ran and went to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and told them, “They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don’t know where they put him.” 11 But Mary stayed outside the tomb weeping. And as she wept, she bent over into the tomb 12 and saw two angels in white sitting there, one at the head and one at the feet where the body of Jesus had been. 13 And they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken my Lord, and I don’t know where they laid him.” 14 When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus there, but did not know it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?” She thought it was the gardener and said to him, “Sir, if you carried him away, tell me where you laid him, and I will take him.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to him in Hebrew, “Rabbouni,” which means teacher. 17 Jesus said to her, “Stop holding on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am going to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’ ” 18 Mary of Magdala went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord,” and what he told her.

my reflections
t h i n k : G od has changed our lives through the gift of salvation; let us be willing to offer that gift to others freely.

SABBATH

OUR GOD IS A GOD OF THE LITTLE ONES

God is not really interested in the status of a person — just their faith. It does not matter to Him whether one is the richest and most powerful person in the world or someone who ekes out a living on a small plot of land in a rural area that has no access to modern amenities. With God, it is not a matter of who or what you know, but how deep is your faith. Jesus chose to appear before Mary Magdalene, whose feast we celebrate today, after He rose from the dead before He showed Himself to the apostles. Why is this the case?
I think Jesus chose this order because He wants to emphasize that it does not matter who we are or what we were before we became His disciple; what matters is that we have faith in Him and are truly seeking His will for our lives. Traditionally, the Church believes that Mary Magdalene is the same woman as the one caught in adultery — she is very blessed to be alive. Yet He appears to her before His apostles.
Mary Magdalene teaches us the value of faith and perseverance. She is an example of gratitude, for why else would she still be among the followers of Jesus? She has encountered Jesus and the encounter has changed her life to the point of being a believer. Mary has made a decision that to be with Jesus, wherever He may be, is the most important desire of her life. Can we say the same of ourselves?
We want to experience the benefits of our faith but are we prepared to make decisions that naturally accompany a life of faith? And it is here that we confront the critical issue: discipleship makes demands on our time and resources. Are we ready to respond accordingly? Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
Am I willing to make the necessary and difficult decisions that will accompany my becoming a disciple of Jesus? Am I serious about my life of faith?

Holy Spirit, open my heart to the grace God offers me to become His disciple and help me to respond to it with a generous and obedient heart.

St. Wandrille, pray for us.
