DIDACHE

HEALED BY TOUCH

“She said to herself, ‘If only I touch his cloak I shall be cured.’” – Matthew 9:21

She bled for 12 years and I can only imagine her frustration at the doctors who could not help her find a cure. I think of her helplessness, her fear of wasting away and her inevitable demise as blood continued to flow from her weakened body. For someone on the brink of death, her desire was simple enough — to touch Jesus.
Maybe it was desperation or an act of surrender that drove her to push her way through the crowd until she was close enough. Then she reached out and touched Jesus’ cloak. What a miraculous healing that gentle, tentative touch brought her. What awesome power from Jesus that simple desire unleashed.
I want to be like this woman — forgiven, healed and with hope in her heart restored. Unbelievably simple as it seems, all I need to do is reach out and touch my Savior.Dina Pecaña (dpecana@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
How has the Lord’s healing hand touched you today?

As I reach out and touch the wound on Your side, heal me, Jesus, and make me whole.

COMPANION

1st READING

Hosea’s prophecies are said to be from the Deuteronomic school. By this the scholars mean that Hosea stands in the tradition that interprets the covenant God made with Israel in terms of love and not just law. It is no wonder that Hosea appeals to us, as it is love that takes center stage in his prophecies concerning God’s relationship with His people.

Hosea 2:16, 17c-18, 21-22
16 Thus says the LORD: I will allure her; I will lead her into the desert and speak to her heart. 17 She shall respond there as in the days of her youth, when she came up from the land of Egypt. 18 On that day, says the LORD, She shall call me “My husband,” and never again “My baal.” 21 I will espouse you to me forever: I will espouse you in right and in justice, in love and in mercy; 22 I will espouse you in fidelity, and you shall know the LORD.

Psalm 145:2-3, 4-5, 6-7, 8-9
R: The Lord is gracious and merciful.
2 Every day will I bless you, and I will praise your name forever and ever. 3 Great is the LORD and highly to be praised; his greatness is unsearchable. (R) 4 Generation after generation praises your works and proclaims your might. 5 They speak of the splendor of your glorious majesty and tell of your wondrous works. (R) 6 They discourse of the power of your terrible deeds and declare your greatness. 7 They publish the fame of your abundant goodness and joyfully sing of your justice. (R) 8 The LORD is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and of great kindness. 9 The LORD is good to all and compassionate toward all his works. (R)

G O S P E L

Jesus willingly heals the daughter of the ruler who comes to Him with that request. We are not told who the ruler is, whether he is Jewish or not; we are told nothing of his origins. What does this tell us about God’s love? It tells us clearly that God gives His love and salvation to all people regardless of who they are. God is not going to choose one person over another; neither should we as we seek to proclaim the Gospel to all men and women.

Matthew 9:18-26
18 While Jesus was speaking, an official came forward, knelt down before him, and said, “My daughter has just died. But come, lay your hand on her, and she will live.” 19 Jesus rose and followed him, and so did his disciples. 20 A woman suffering hemorrhages for twelve years came up behind him and touched the tassel on his cloak. 21 She said to herself, “If only I can touch his cloak, I shall be cured.” 22 Jesus turned around and saw her, and said, “Courage, daughter! Your faith has saved you.” And from that hour the woman was cured. 23 When Jesus arrived at the official’s house and saw the flute players and the crowd who were making a commotion, 24 he said, “Go away! The girl is not dead but sleeping.” And they ridiculed him. 25 When  the crowd was put out, he came and took her by the hand, and the little girl arose. 26 And news of this spread throughout all that land.

my reflections
think: God is not going to choose one person over another; neither should we as we seek to proclaim the Gospel to all men and women.

SABBATH

A TRULY EXTRAORDINARY STORY

I believe we make a mistake when we reflect upon the Gospel and Scriptural narratives and recognize their extraordinary nature and then conclude that we are not worthy to experience the same or similar actions of God. Perhaps we do this to lessen our expectations regarding the desire of God to intervene in our lives? If this is the case, we are wrong. God desires to work fully in our lives. He has no favorites, so to speak. His miracles and extraordinary graces are for everyone and not just for some. If we can accept this truth then we are one step closer to releasing the infinite power of God’s love in our lives.
One of the secrets of the saints is their openness to the power of God. It is not that some are chosen to be witnesses of God’s power and others are not. Rather, some choose to believe and open their lives to the work of God while others do not. God always responds to our openness. How does one quantify faith or openness to God? Faith or depth of relationship with God is not something that you can quantify. It is essentially a relationship and so always has an element of mystery attached to it. Why are we drawn to some people and not to others? What matters here is that we believe God wants to work in our lives and so we open ourselves to Him so He can do so in the way that He desires.
This is the second of the secrets of the saints: they never try to control God — they simply accept His grace and use it as He directs them. It is this acceptance of the control and power of God that is often difficult for us to accept. We do not like to be subject to another’s will even when that person happens to be God. At one level we know this is a ridiculous way to feel; at another level we are reluctant to accept this truth. We are complicated beings. Let us seek the grace of simplicity and obedience to God’s will and see what a difference it makes in our lives.Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
What is my opinion on surrendering my life to the will of God? Am I willing to follow His will or do I want to forge my own way and path in life?

Holy Spirit, help me to realize that it is only in living according to God’s will that I will experience true and total fulfilment in this life.

St. Edana, pray for us.
