LOVE GOD

“The kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure buried in a field, which a person finds and hides again, and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.” –
Matthew 13:44

Bannered in the front page of a local newspaper was the story about a local millionaire who gave up his thriving motel business for the love of God. Very inspiring! He is a Christian.
As Catholics, what are we willing to do for our God? Why do we pay for every minute of a phone call but skip on a free conversation with the Lord i prayer? Why do we listen to hours of mangled facts in a senate inquiry but sit restlessly for just one hour in Holy Mass to hear the truth? Why can we budget for flowers that wilt but withhold on a donation that will forever warm a soul? Why are we willing to swallow our pride in apology for hurting our best friend but stay away from confession to be reconciled with our Lord?
We find ways to please our family and friends to prove our love to them and win their approval and affection. If we say we love God, shouldn’t we be doing the same for Him? No need for grand actions. There are simple things within our reach. Marie Franco (rfranco@its.jnj.com)

REFLECTION:
Am I complacent in loving God knowing that He is merciful?

For the times I take You for granted, Lord, forgive me.

1st READING

Jeremiah laments the lack of response of the people and so questions his role as God’s spokesman. A prophet is often faced with a virtually impossible task — one man against all of the rest. However, the seed of truth needs to be planted and tended. As the seed grows perhaps people will be attracted to its fruit and the shade of its boughs. Slowly people will be drawn to it and more seeds will be planted and a forest will result.

Jeremiah 15:10, 16-21
10 Woe to me, mother, that you gave me birth! a man of strife and contention to all the land! I neither borrow nor lend, yet all curse me. 16 When I found your words, I devoured them; they became my joy and the happiness of my heart, because I bore your name, O LORD, God of hosts. 17 I did not sit celebrating in the circle of merrymakers; under the weight of your hand I sat alone because you filled me with indignation. 18 Why is my pain continuous, my wound incurable, refusing to be healed? You have indeed become for me a treacherous brook, whose waters do not abide! 19 Thus the LORD answered me: If you repent, so that I restore you, in my presence you shall stand; if you bring forth the precious without the vile, you shall be my mouthpiece. Then it shall be they who turn to you, and you shall not turn to them; 20 and I will make you toward this people a solid wall of brass. Though they fight against you, they shall not prevail, for I am with you, to deliver and rescue you, says the LORD. 21 I will free you from the hand of the wicked, and rescue you from the grasp of the violent.

P S A L M
Psalm 59:2-3, 4, 10-11, 17, 18
R: God is my refuge on the day of distress.
1 [2] Rescue me from my enemies, O my God; from my adversaries defend me. 2 [3] Rescue me from evildoers; from bloodthirsty men save me. (R) 3 [4] For behold, they lie in wait for my life; mighty men come together against me. Not for any offense or sin of mine, O LORD. (R) 9 [10] O my strength! for you I watch; for you, O God, are my stronghold, 10 [11] As for my God, may his mercy go before me; may he show me the fall of my foes. (R) 16 [17] But I will sing of your strength and revel at dawn in your mercy; you have been my stronghold, my refuge in the day of distress. (R) 17 [18] O my strength! your praise will I sing; for you, O God, are my stronghold, my merciful God! (R)

G O S P E L

What is your greatest desire? Is it something holy and righteous — something fit for the Kingdom of God and promotes its growth? If not, then perhaps it is time to rethink your greatest desire. Perhaps it is time to refocus your life on the Kingdom of God. It is up to you how you live your life, just remember that one day you will have to give an account of all that you did for in this life.

Matthew 13:44-46
44 Jesus said to his disciples: “The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field, which a person finds and hides again, and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. 45 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant searching for fine pearls. 46 When he finds a pearl of great price, he goes and sells all that he has and buys it.”

my reflections
t h i n k : Is your deepest desire holy and righteous?

SABBATH

THE PEARL OF GREAT PRICE

My father is an oyster farmer. I have spent thousands of hours working closely with him on the oyster farm and we have never discovered a pearl. Well, that is at least partly because the species of oyster he farms is not one that cultivates pearls. Nevertheless we have discovered a different pearl that is worth far more than anything that an oyster can produce — our relationship as father and son. There is something healthy about working with one’s father where there is mutual trust. The respect that has grown between me and my father over 25 years endures up to now.
Our relationships with our parents are something to be treasured, respected and enjoyed. Too often, the busyness of life and the demands of economic reality lead to a weakening in the familial ties to the point that they are sometimes lost. This is a tremendous loss for both the individual and society. If the family unit is weakened, society is weakened. If the family unit collapses, it won’t be long before this happens to society as well. We see the results of family breakdown in society today in terms of the lack of respect that children have for their elders, the lack of responsibility in various sectors of society, drugs, alcoholism and other extreme forms of behavior. We can throw all the money that we want in looking for solutions to these problems but the only real solution will be derived from the strengthening of the family unit. Restoring relationships within families and instilling the necessary formation into children will stand them in good stead later in life and a better society will emerge.Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
How well do I treasure the relationships within my family? Do I put enough effort into making them grow and developing them in healthy and sustainable ways?

Holy Spirit, help me to treasure each member of my family, even those I do not get along with so well. Help me to work harder at developing my relationship with them.

St. Innocent I, pray for us.
