THE YOKE OF PURITY

“Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God.” – Matthew 5:8

On the second day of the Kerygma Conference 2008, God woke me up early and told me to totally change my talk. I didn’t have much time to prepare. On stage, I opened the Bible to Matthew 11:28: “Come to me all of you who are weary and tired and I will give you rest.” That passage is so familiar but the verse that follows is a bit hard to understand. It says, “Take my yoke upon you.”
A yoke is a wooden beam that you put on an animal so it can pull a plow or a wagon. Not very restful, I assure you. So what did Jesus want me to talk about?
Many people are tired either because of their trials or their sins. And people carry either the yoke of God or the yoke of sin — the yoke of purity or the yoke of impurity.
As I spoke, the crowd was more silent than usual. Then I led all over 6,000 people to kneel down. We repented of our sins and received God’s forgiveness. We made a solemn commitment to live a life of purity. Many were set free that day.
Friends, I invite you to make the same commitment today. Take the yoke of purity. Jesus wants to set you free.Bo Sanchez (bosanchez@kerygmafamily.com)

REFLECTION:
What yoke am I carrying now? Is it leading me to Jesus or away from Him?

Today, Jesus, I make a solemn commitment to let go of the yoke of impurity and instead take on Your yoke. I am tired of the yoke of sin and I want to rest in You.

1st READING

Just thinking about the Communion of the Saints ought to bring great joy to our hearts. Why? Because we have so many friends in heaven interceding for us. What more can you ask for? If we cannot manage to live our Christian lives with all that help, what hope is there for us? We have everything to live for because Jesus has poured His love into our hearts (Romans 5:5).

Revelation 7:2-4, 9-14
2 I, John, saw another angel come up from the East, holding the seal of the living God. He cried out in a loud voice to the four angels who were given power to damage the land and the sea, 3 “Do not damage the land or the sea or the trees until we put the seal on the foreheads of the servants of our God.” 4 I heard the number of those who had been marked with the seal, one hundred and forty-four thousand marked from every tribe of the Israelites: 9 After this I had a vision of a great multitude, which no one could count, from every nation, race, people, and tongue. They stood before the throne and before the Lamb, wearing white robes and holding palm branches in their hands. 10 They cried out in a loud voice: “Salvation comes from our God, who is seated on the throne, and from the Lamb.” 11 All the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures. They prostrated themselves before the throne, worshipped God, 12 and exclaimed: “Amen. Blessing and glory, wisdom and thanksgiving, honor, power, and might be to our God forever and ever. Amen.” 13 Then one of the elders spoke up and said to me, “Who are these wearing white robes, and where did they come from?” 14 I said to him, “My lord, you are the one who knows.” He said to me, “These are the ones who have survived the time of great distress; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.”

P S A L M
Psalm 24:1b-2, 3-4ab, 5-6
R: Lord, this is the people that longs to see your face.
1 The LORD’s are the earth and its fullness; the world and those who dwell in it. 2 For he founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers. (R) 3 Who can ascend the mountain of the LORD? Or who may stand in his holy place? 4 He whose hands are sinless, whose heart is clean, who desires not what is vain. (R) 5 He shall receive a blessing from the LORD, a reward from God his savior. 6 Such is the race that seeks for him, that seeks the face of the God of Jacob. (R)

2nd READING

God’s love makes us His children. Therefore, all the people in heaven interceding for us are family. We do not yet fully understand what that means. However, we can begin to live this truth by participating as fully as we can in our own faith communities. The way we love our blood brothers and sisters should be the model of our love for our brothers and sisters in faith.

1 John 3:1-3
1 Beloved: See what love the Father has bestowed on us that we may be called the children of God. Yet so we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we shall be has not yet been revealed. We do know that when it is revealed we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. 3 Everyone who has this hope based on him makes himself pure, as he is pure.

G O S P E L

The beatitudes describe what our Christian character should be like. It might be a good idea if each of us writes out a copy of the beatitudes and puts it in a place where we can read it each day. In this way, we will be reminded of how we should be living our lives. Sometimes we need to be able to see the goal clearly before us in order to be inspired by it.

Matthew 5:1-12a
1 When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain, and after he had sat down, his disciples came to him. 2 He began to teach them, saying: 3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land. 6 Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied. 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. 8 Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. 10 Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven.”

The Defects of the Saints

Many pious souls may find shocking the above title of a book by Fr. Jesus Urteaga (Sinag-Tala Publishers, Inc. Manila). Defects of the saints? Are saints not all-holy and without defects, you may ask. With all our weaknesses, failures, sins and shortcomings, becoming saints seem impossible for us.
Fr. Urteaga writes in the introduction to his book, “Those saints on the altars are not made of wax and plaster, but are mortals like us.”
Saints were not born with a halo. St. Peter was a coward when he denied the Lord, St. Paul persecuted the Church. St. Augustine was a playboy who seemingly mocked heaven when he called his illegitimate son Adeodatus (Given by God). St. Therese of the Child Jesus was a very stubborn kid. Blessed Mother Teresa lived for decades without feeling God near her…. And so we could go on.
What then made them saints? Their struggle! When they sinned, they went to Confession, seriously determined not to commit the same sin again. When they fell, they stood up without giving up.
Like those known saints, we cannot avoid to struggle and like them conquer our weaknesses in the end. “For every fall, God leaves us a basketful of hope,” Fr. Urteaga writes. That’s good news for us.
St. Paul wrote, “God wants everybody to become holy.” When God wants something we have no right to say, “Impossible.” He provides the means to reach this goal: Confession, the Eucharist, reading the Bible, praying regularly, and avoiding persons, places and things that cause us easily to sin.
Today, we honor all those unknown saints who were never canonized but reached the joys of heaven because they never gave up in their struggle but tried to live out Christ’s values in daily life. May November 1 also become your feastday and mine!  Fr. Rudy Horst,SVD

Reflection Question:
Am I easily discouraged by my weaknesses and sins? Do I trust the Lord enough to get up and go on like the saints did?

Lord, in my weaknesses I feel often discouraged. When I fall, I lack the courage to stand up and go on struggling. Lord, when You fell under the weight of the Cross, You got up and went on. Help me to follow Your example when I fall under the weight of my weaknesses and sins and so reach the goal: heaven.

Blessed Paul Navarro, pray for us.

MISSIONARIES WITHOUT BORDERS

… That our God may make you worthy of his calling and powerfully bring to fulfillment every good purpose and every effort of faith, that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you. – 2 Thessalonians 1:11-12

“When the angels stop singing, when stars stop shining, when the three kings are able to reach home through another route, so the missionary task begins.” This was Archbishop Angel Lagdameo’s final words during a Mass to launch an out-of-school youth program.
The lyrical words remind us that, indeed, Jesus came in order to send us forth — to make us missionaries. Just like the Mass is said to be a commissioning, so our baptism calls us to bring glory to our Lord through our good works. We don’t always belong to organizations that produce big projects. Nor are we required to do so. What the Lord calls us to, however, is to have big hearts so that even in seemingly “small” acts, we will love in a great way. And in the process, we glorify our Lord.
Do we think that our circumstances prevent us from serving the Lord? Because of lack of funds? Or perhaps because of lack of education? In truth, nothing can stop us from glorifying the Lord if we really want to. We set our own boundaries. Are we missionaries without borders?Joy Sosoban (jsosoban@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:

1st READING

Compared to You, Lord, all creation is as nothing. Yet, You are the one who chose to create all living things out of love and the desire to share Your love with others. As I reflect upon the wonders of Your mercy and love, help me to open my life to their transforming power and so become an instrument of them for others.

Wisdom 11:22-12:2
22 Before the LORD the whole universe is as a grain from a balance, or a drop of morning dew come down upon the earth. 23 But you have mercy on all, because you can do all things; and you overlook the sins of men that they may repent. 24 For you love all things that are and loathe nothing that you have made; for what you hated, you would not have fashioned. 25 And how could a thing remain, unless you willed it; or be preserved, had it not been called forth by you? 26 But you spare all things, because they are yours, O LORD and lover of souls, 12: 1 for your imperishable spirit is in all things! 2 Therefore you rebuke offenders little by little, warn them, and remind them of the sins they are committing, that they may abandon their wickedness and believe in you, O LORD!

P S A L M

Psalm 145:1-2, 8-9, 10-11, 13, 14
R: I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God.
1 I will extol you, O my God and King, and I will bless your name forever and ever. 2 Every day will I bless you, and I will praise your name forever and ever. (R) 8 The LORD is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and of great kindness. 9 The LORD is good to all and compassionate toward all his works. (R) 10 Let all your works give you thanks, O LORD, and let your faithful ones bless you. 11 Let them discourse of the glory of your kingdom and speak of your might. (R) 13 The LORD is faithful in all his words and holy in all his works. 14 The LORD lifts up all who are falling and raises up all who are bowed down. (R)

2nd READING

It is the work of God through the Holy Spirit to make us worthy to be His disciples, to make us worthy of salvation. Let us never tire in responding to the Spirit’s call and always seek to open our hearts to His grace as He leads us on the journey of a lifetime. Jesus, You are the only way to the Father; help me to enter into a deeper relationship with You as well.

2 Thessalonians 1:11-2:2
11 Brothers and sisters: We always pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling and powerfully bring to fulfillment every good purpose and every effort of faith, 12 that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, in accord with the grace of our God and Lord Jesus Christ. 2: 1 We ask you, brothers and sisters, with regard to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our assembling with him, 2 not to be shaken out of your minds suddenly, or to be alarmed either by a “spirit,” or by an oral statement, or by a letter allegedly from us to the effect that the day of the Lord is at hand.

G O S P E L
Zacchaeus responds to Jesus’ inviting himself to eat at his house by repenting of his sin. How do I know he repented? I know because Zacchaeus freely offers to make reparation for his sinful practices. When we repent of our sins we ought to do everything we can to repair any of the damage our sin has done. This is not always possible or easy, but we should seriously look at the issue before we dismiss it too easily.

Luke 19:1-10
1 At that time, Jesus came to Jericho and intended to pass through the town. 2 Now a man there named Zacchaeus, who was a chief tax collector and also a wealthy man, 3 was seeking to see who Jesus was; but he could not see him because of the crowd, for he was short in stature. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree in order to see Jesus, who was about to pass that way. 5 When he reached the place, Jesus looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down quickly, for today I must stay at your house.” 6 And he came down quickly and received him with joy. 7 When they all saw this, they began to grumble, saying, “He has gone to stay at the house of a sinner.” 8 But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, “Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I shall give to the poor, and if I have extorted anything from anyone I shall repay it four times over.” 9 And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house because this man too is a descendant of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save what was lost.”
Psalm 19-23

Reparation Is Constitutive of Repentance

The story of Zacchaeus gives us a very good picture of how a truly repentant sinner should reparate. Zacchaeus, a tax collector, was considered an enemy by his fellow Jews because of the excessive taxes he collected from them. For this reason, a tax collector during Jesus’ time was also considered a great sinner. That is why the Pharisees and the Scribes were scandalized when Jesus partied at Matthew’s house. But that is another story.
Going back to Zacchaeus, Jesus must have felt Zaccahaeus’ desire to see Him. So, when He saw Zaccaheus on the sycamore tree, He approached him and told him the good news that He would visit his house. Jesus’ gesture was enough for Zacchaeus to realize His care and his own need for repentance. Then, everybody heard the pronouncements of a reformed man, “Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I shall give to the poor, and if I have extorted anything from anyone, I shall repay it four times over.” How we wish all repentant sinners would do the same. We should not only say sorry, but reparate if we have done any damage and repay if we have stolen something. There lies the true sign of a repentant sinner.
Unknowingly maybe, the elements of the Sacrament of Reconciliation is present in this story: Examination of Conscience, Confession of Sins, Penance and Absolution. The Examination of Conscience is found in Zacchaeus’ condition before and when he met Jesus. Confession was when he mentioned what he had done to others in terms of fraud and extortion. Penance happened when he promised to repay what he had taken and offered to give to the poor. Absolution happened when Jesus declared that salvation has come to his house.
Zacchaeus helped us understand the true essence of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The reparation part is often taken for granted. Justice requires that we at least do something to atone for our mistakes. It is the true and effective sign of repentance. Anything short of it makes our repentance questionable. God forgives unconditionally but He expects full contrition if we are to benefit His complete forgiveness. Let us pray for more Zacchaeuses. Fr. Benny Tuazon

Reflection Question:
How do you approach the Sacrament of Reconciliation? Do you prepare well by making an examination of conscience? Are you fully honest in repenting for all the sins you have committed? Do you promise not to do them again?

Lord, grant me a contrite heart and the courage to make full reparation for my wrongdoings.

St. Bega, pray for us.

LESSONS ON HUMILITY

“For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” – Luke 14:11

Just the other night, my Catholic Korean student and I were talking about false humility. Being a cellgroup leader, too, she asked me how to differentiate true humility from false humility. So I told her about what I learned in my faith walk so far.
I told her that true humility is all about following Christ’s footsteps, keeping one’s feet on the ground and never being a “braggadocio.” Of course, I didn’t use those big words with my student but I said something close to that.
False humility, on the contrary, arises when we decline opportunities to serve at church because we think that we’re not good enough or others are better than us, even though we know that we are capable of doing the tasks at hand.
I related to her how I was encouraged to pastor six professional single women even though I doubted my own capabilities, abilities and leadership skills. With God’s anointing, I took on the responsibilities of being a care group head because I know this was part of what God had called me to do. Leeanne Sy (emeraldsychan@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
Are you practicing true humility or merely sporting false humility because the evil one has planted seeds of doubt in your heart? Acknowledge your God-given talents to serve more people.

Father, teach me to keep my feet on the ground and to be truly humble like Your Son.

COMPANION

1st READING

Paul speaks about a division in his heart – of wanting to depart the earth for the life of heaven and at the same time, desiring to be a minister of the Gospel. I tend to think the better desire is the latter one as dying will come no matter how long we stay here working at the latter. Better to be generous in giving our lives for the sake of the Gospel while we can in order to store up grace and blessings for ourselves in heaven.

Philippians 1:18b-26
18 Brothers and sisters: As long as in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is being proclaimed. And in that I rejoice. Indeed I shall continue to rejoice, 19 for I know that this will result in deliverance for me through your prayers and support from the Spirit of Jesus Christ. 20 My eager expectation and hope is that I shall not be put to shame in any way, but that with all boldness, now as always, Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death. 21 For to me life is Christ, and death is gain. 22 If I go on living in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. And I do not know which I shall choose. 23 I am caught between the two. I long to depart this life and be with Christ, for that is far better. 24 Yet that I remain in the flesh is more necessary for your benefit. 25 And this I know with confidence, that I shall remain and continue in the service of all of you for your progress and joy in the faith, 26 so that your boasting in Christ Jesus may abound on account of me when I come to you again.

P S A L M

Psalm 42:2, 3, 5cdef
R: My soul is thirsting for the living God.
1 [2] As the hind longs for the running waters, so my soul longs for you, O God. (R) 2 [3] Athirst is my soul for God, the living God. When shall I go and behold the face of God? (R) 4 [5] I went with the throng and led them in procession to the house of God, amid loud cries of joy and thanksgiving, with the multitude keeping festival. (R)

G O S P E L

Similar to yesterday’s Gospel, today’s Gospel has many parallels. Jesus is constantly reminding His disciples (and us) of the need for humility in the life of a disciple. Humility is often one of the most difficult virtues to cultivate. However, Catherine of Siena reminds us that it is one of the most important as it is the basis for the ordering of the Christian life. That is, it is through humility that the Spirit of God works most powerfully within us.

Luke 14:1, 7-11
1 On a sabbath Jesus went to dine at the home of one of the leading Pharisees, and the people there were observing him carefully. 7 He told a parable to those who had been invited, noticing how they were choosing the places of honor at the table. 8 “When you are invited by someone toa wedding banquet, do not recline at table in the place of honor. A more distinguished guest than you may have been invited by him, 9 and the host who invited both of you may approach you and say, ‘Give your place to this man,’ and then you would proceed with embarrassment to take the lowest place. 10 Rather, when you are invited, go and take the lowest place so that when the host comes to you he may say, ‘My friend, move up to a higher position.’ Then you will enjoy the esteem of your companions at the table. 11 For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

my reflections
t h i n k : It is through humility that the Spirit of God works must powerfully within us.

SABBATH

Humbly Saved

The Gospel today happened on a Sabbath day and Jesus gave a lesson on humility. He was criticizing the Pharisees for their misguided values. Because of their fanatic adherence to the laws, they had become unconcerned about the conditions of their fellow human beings. They believed that fulfilling the law, no matter who was concerned, was the ultimate purpose.
Jesus told the parable to send the message that salvation is not determined by individuals, is not guaranteed in the fulfillment of the laws and is not received first by those who are righteous. In the same way that the humble is exalted and the exalted is humbled, those who had gone astray and repented would go ahead of those who had been righteous but were not repentant. This is stressed so many times in the Gospels this month. This was Jesus’ main Gospel — repentance. As soon as He embarked on His ministry after His baptism at the River Jordan, He went about preaching repentance. He was not devaluing nor ignoring the importance of the law and pious activities. But if these were done merely externally and from an arrogant and righteous heart, they will not gain the favor of God.
Jesus gives us a warning in the parable of the wedding banquet. Be careful in determining yourself as already worthy of the Kingdom. You might be surprised. The parable of Jesus about the sheep and the goats reminds us that on the dayof judgment, we will be judged according to how we treated our neighbors. Jesus clarified there that our service to God is done through our neighbors. Charity counts big in our discipleship. However small our services to our neighbors are, those are rendered to God. Any service rendered to God is always big. The Lord’s stress on humility now becomes clear. Humility entails service. Service is always making oneself available for the needy other. Whether it is time, talent or treasure in whatever measure, when done out of love, it is always very precious to God. Bear in mind and keep in our hearts that we are creatures who are always dependent on God. That alone should remind us to be humble always.Fr. Benny Tuazon

Reflection Question:
What is humility for you? Are you humble in accepting the truth about yourself and others? Does your humility lead to more service and love for others?

Awaken me from my complacency, Lord. Humble my heart and let me see the way to salvation.

St. Herbert, pray for us.
