GOD-HEALER

“I have heard your prayer and seen your tears. I will heal you…” – Isaiah 38:5

I have shared our journey of infertility for eight years in my reflections here a couple of times. Through email, Facebook and text messages, I have received words of thanks for the assurance that our story has brought. (As I write, I have a 16-month-old daughter and am about to give birth to our son.) I myself have been inspired by stories from couples who have been blessed with children after many years of waiting. A number of them had experiences as miraculous as ours.
Still, I receive requests for prayers for those who remain childless. There’s one woman who always asks me to pray for her son and daughter-in-law to finally have their little angel.
There is a neighbor couple who has been trying for so long, and has tried all means to conceive only to be frustrated.
There is one couple-friend who is pondering adoption.
I would like to claim God’s powerful Word for these friends today. The Lord hears and sees. He is God-Healer.
May the child they pray for come at His best time, wrapped in His finest packaging. Lallaine Gogna (lallygogna@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
Is there anybody who needs healing whom you need to pray for today?

Work miracles in our lives, Lord. We look to You for the perfect answer to our prayers.

COMPANION

1st READING

God desires us to have repentant hearts that desire conversion. This is the way of life that the saints have discovered pleases God most. It is the way that each of us must seek to cultivate if we want to be pleasing to God. This is why the saints were so adamant that we must excise all sin from our lives, including the small ones. Let us take this principle to heart and put it into practice.

Isaiah 38:1-6, 21-22, 7-8
1 When Hezekiah was mortally ill, the prophet Isaiah, son of Amoz, came and said to him: “Thus says the LORD: Put your house in order, for you are about to die; you shall not recover.” 2 Then Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the LORD: 3 “O LORD, remember how faithfully and wholeheartedly I conducted myself in your presence, doing what was pleasing to you!” And Hezekiah wept bitterly. 4 Then the word of the LORD came to Isaiah : 5 “Go, tell Hezekiah: Thus says the LORD, the God of your father David. I have heard your prayer and seen your tears. I will heal you, in three days you shall go up to the LORD’s temple; I will add fifteen years to your life. 6 I will rescue you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria; I will be a shield to this city.” 7 [21] Isaiah then ordered a poultice of figs to be taken and applied to the boil, that he might recover. 8 [22] Then Hezekiah asked, “What is the sign that I shall go up to the temple of the LORD?” 9 [7] Isaiah answered: “This will be the sign for you from the LORD that he will do what he has promised. 10 [8] See, I will make the shadow cast by the sun on the stairway to the terrace of Ahaz go back the ten steps it has advanced.” So the sun came back the ten steps it had advanced.

Isaiah 38:10, 11, 12abcd, 16
R: You saved my life, O Lord; I shall not die.
12 [10] Once I said, “In the noontime of life I must depart! To the gates of the nether world I shall be consigned for the rest of my years.” (R) 13 [11] I said, “I shall see the LORD no more in the land of the living. No longer shall I behold my fellow men among those who dwell in the world.” (R) 14 [12] My dwelling, like a shepherd’s tent, is struck down and borne away from me; you have folded up my life, like a weaver who severs the last thread. (R) 18 [16] Those live whom the LORD protects; yours is the life of my spirit. You have given me health and life. (R)

G O S P E L
The Sabbath is a day of rest when we are to refrain from servile work. Picking crops and milling them was considered servile work and thus banned. However, if the hunger pangs are at your stomach’s door, I doubt you would consider the Sabbath Law too seriously. Hunger is a very big motivator. We need to remember that the laws of God are supposed to be at the service of the person to guide our actions towards human fulfillment. Satisfying one’s hunger fits this bill, I think, and is not wrong in itself.

Matthew 12:1-8
1 Jesus was going through a field of grain on the sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick the heads of grain and eat them. 2 When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, “See, your disciples are doing what is unlawful to do on the sabbath.” 3 He said to them, “Have you not read what David did when he and his companions were hungry, 4 how he went into the house of God and ate the bread of offering, which neither he nor his companions but only the priests could lawfully eat? 5 Or have you not read in the law that on the sabbath the priests serving in the temple violate the sabbath and are innocent? 6 I say to you, something greater than the temple is here. 7 If you knew what this meant, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned these innocent men. 8 For the Son of Man is Lord of the sabbath.”
Ezra 6-10

SABBATH

THE TRUE MEASURE OF THE LAW

In the world today people seem to be less and less ready to accept the Law as God presents it in the Scriptures and through the teaching authority of the Church. On other hand, they are more and more ready to embrace an interpretation of human nature that is expedient and “for the present moment,” rarely looking to the long-term welfare of humanity. You only have to walk the streets of a big city for a few minutes and you’d see someone flaunt the law to his own advantage, confident that he is unlikely to be called to account for his transgression, such as beating the red light, throwing litter out of the car, fudging the books, and so on.
These acts see only the immediate future and do not consider the lasting effects they have — that is, teaching the youth and children to disregard the law, destroying the environment one garbage at a time, and encouraging corruption. It’s true, one act may not be that significant in the overall scheme take that attitude then we have a very serious problem no matter how hard we try to rationalize away our individual actions.
The Gospel makes very clear to us that the Law is there to serve humanity, that is, for the common good. While laws may be an inconvenience at times for individuals, they are instituted to serve the greater good of all humanity. Only with an eye for the common good will we develop within us a truly responsible manner of living and acting.
There is a need to bring common good to the fore of political thought and action if society is going to regain its moral character and witness. Individuals must decide to submit themselves to the common good, not just out of concern for others but as a moral imperative. Without concern for the common good, a society of individuals acting without concern for others will self-destruct, and do so rather more quickly than we would like to think!Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
What understanding of the common good do I have? How do I make my choices in life while respecting this fundamental principle?

Father, You have created us to be communal beings. Never allow us to forget our duty to the common good of humanity.

St. Marie Magdalene Postel, pray for us.
