REVERSE TITHING

“Give and gifts will be given to you…” – Luke 6:38

After 30 years of giving, I now earn enough to the point that I give 40 percent of my income to God and to the poor. (Hey, I know I’ll lose a few rewards in heaven for telling you how much I give. But I don’t care. I want to inspire people to give more to God and to the poor.)
This is why I say I’m truly rich: because I’m a giver.
But here’s my real dream: To do a reverse tithe.
I want to earn so much that I can give 90 percent — and live on the remaining 10 percent. (Yes, I’ve got it all plotted out, written down in my 15-page Dream Book that I’ve been reading each morning for more than 10 years now.)
I’m not saying that you should give 40 percent of your income to God and the poor. That’s my personal decision. My life has been so involved in ministry and service and I know its many needs. That’s why I made that my dream.
But this is my challenge to you: Earn to give.
And it’s true: God cannot be outdone in giving. Bo Sanchez (bosanchez@kerygmafamily.com)

REFLECTION:
What do you have that isn’t from God?

To You, O Lord, I owe all that I am and allthat I have. Grant me a generous heart and spirit so I can give to those who need my help.

COMPANION

1st READING

Daniel expresses the truth of Israel’s sinfulness and God’s integrity. In so doing, he captures the essence of the dilemma that all human beings must confront at one time or another: in the face of the holiness of God and our own sin, what will we do? The correct response is to accept God’s offer of forgiveness and repent of our sins. This Lent, let us pray for the grace to open our hearts to the merciful forgiveness of our loving God.

Daniel 9:4b-10
4 “Lord, great and awesome God, you who keep your merciful covenant toward those who love you and observe your commandments! 5 We have sinned, been wicked and done evil; we have rebelled and departed from your commandments and your laws. 6 We have not obeyed your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings, our princes, our fathers, and all the people of the land. 7 Justice, O Lord, is on your side; we are shamefaced even to this day: the men of Judah, the residents of Jerusalem, and all Israel, near and far, in all the countries to which you have scattered them because of their treachery toward you. 8 O LORD, we are shamefaced, like our kings, our princes, and our fathers, for having sinned against you. 9 But yours, O Lord, our God, are compassion and forgiveness! Yet we rebelled against you 10 and paid no heed to your command, O LORD, our God, to live by the law you gave us through your servants the prophets.”

P S A L M

Psalm 79:8, 9, 11, 13
R: Lord, do not deal with us according to our sins.
8 Remember not against us the iniquities of the past; may your compassion quickly come to us, for we are brought very low. (R) 9 Help us, O God our savior, because of the glory of your name; deliver us and pardon our sins for your name’s sake. (R) 11 Let the prisoners’ sighing come before you; with your great power free those doomed to death. 13 Then we, your people and the sheep of your pasture, will give thanks to you forever; through all generations we will declare your praise. (R)

G O S P E L
God’s generosity and love is beyond questioning. Yes, there is suffering and hardship in the world but none of it can be blamed on God. The suffering in the world is mostly a result of the choices human beings have made — choices of refusing to love God and our neighbor. Let us resolve to always choose the path of love when faced with the difficult decisions of life.

Luke 6:36-38
36 Jesus said to his disciples: “Be merciful, just as [also] your Father is merciful. 37 “Stop judging and you will not be judged. Stop condemning and you will not be condemned. Forgive and you will be forgiven. 38 Give and gifts will be given to you; a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing, will be poured into your lap. For the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you.”

my reflections
think: Let us resolve to always choose the path of love when faced with the difficult decisions of life.

Correcting Our Own Exams
Way back in our grade school days in Paco Catholic School, the average class size was around 49 to 52 students. Teachers taught the same subject to a good number of sections and this meant monitoring the progress of many students. At that time, Paco Catholic School was already known as the biggest parochial school in terms of student population.
Our teachers were very innovative in their efforts to lighten their workloads. For example, the task of correcting numerous homeworks, seatworks and quizzes was greatly simplified by the practice of “exchanging notebooks or papers” with our seatmates. The right answers were read by the teacher, and we took on the responsibility of checking our seatmate’s work. Later, we were evenasked to check our own seatworks and quizzes and, in the end, tally our own scores and grades.
Looking back now, I realize that those practices did not only lighten the teacher’s work. Those practices also developed in us the appreciation of the value of honesty — to others, and most especially to self. This last one proves to be the most challenging. There were instances when one would be tempted to quickly right a wrong answer, most especially when that one answer spelled the difference between passing or failing the exam.
Jesus’ teachings today underscore this: hard and challenging as it may seem, values and virtues do begin with oneself. We can read, listen to, and learn about moral and spiritual disciplines from books, and from other people’s testimonies. However, to truly live moral and spiritual uprightness, the measures should flow from a personal and interior conviction. No outside measures and pressures can effect goodness that lasts. Fr. Domie Guzman, SSP

Reflection Question:
Lent is not just a season for external sacrifices. It is a time of grace to journey into ourselves. What values and virtues do you need to appreciate more as interior measures,
rather than external disciplines?

Father, let the good works that I do stem from my personal convictions, and not just for show.

St. Aubin, pray for us.

Trust Him, Please HIM

Abraham put his faith in the Lord, who credited it to him as an act of righteousness. – Genesis 15:6

God promised Abraham that he will be the father of many nations even though he was advanced in age and his wife was barren. That promise kept Abraham hoping and believing. Just like Abraham, there will be situations in our lives when we seemingly face the impossible. Do you remember how many times you worried about having a shortage in finances for education, rent, food or even business only to see yourself getting over them? You can’t quite explain how it happened but that was God tying up loose ends.
How many times does God have to prove Himself to us that He will never forsake or abandon us? He will always make a way even in the “dead ends” of our life. He parted the Red Sea so the Israelites could cross and escape sure death. He will make a way for you and me today.
We serve a God whose expertise is doing the impossible. Let’s put our faith in Him today. For where there is faith, God works His miracles.Jess Santos (jesus_santos_07@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
What area in your life today requires your faith muscles to work? Exercise them to the max for God works miracles in the face of His people’s faith.

Dear God, increase my faith. Help my unbelief at times. May I experience fully Your favor in my life in Your own perfect time, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

1st READING

The promises that God gives to Abraham are worth reflecting upon as they give us an idea of the scope of God’s power and the depth of His love for us. (See also Genesis 12:1-3). God promises Abraham as many descendants as the stars, if he can count them. In other words, his descendents shall be innumerable. This is good news for us as it means that we are counted among them provided we live our lives with faith, in imitation of Abraham, our Father in faith.

Genesis 15:5-12, 17-18
5 The Lord God took Abram outside and said: “Look up at the sky and count the stars, if you can. Just so,” he added, “shall your descendants be.” 6 Abram put his faith in the LORD, who credited it to him as an act of righteousness. 7 He then said to him, “I am the LORD who brought you from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land as a possession.” 8 “O Lord GOD,” he asked, “How am I to know that I shall possess it?” 9 He answered him, “Bring me a three-year-old heifer, a three-year-old she-goat, a three-year-old ram, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.” 10 He brought him all these, split them in two, and placed each half opposite the other; but the birds he did not cut up. 11 Birds of prey swooped down on the carcasses, but Abram stayed with them. 12 As the sun was about to set, a trance fell upon Abram, and a deep, terrifying darkness  enveloped him. 17 When the sun had set and it was dark, there appeared a smoking brazier and a flaming torch, which passed between those pieces. 18 It was on that occasion that the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying: “To your descendants I give this land, from the Wadi of Egypt to the Great River the Euphrates.

P S A L M
Psalm 27:1, 7-8, 8-9, 13-14
R: The Lord is my light and my salvation.
1 The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom should I fear? The LORD is my life’s refuge; of whom should I be afraid? (R) 7 Hear, O LORD, the sound of my call; have pity on me, and answer me. 8 Of you my heart speaks; you my glance seeks. (R) Your presence, O LORD, I seek. 9 Hide not your face from me; do not in anger repel your servant. You are my helper: cast me not off. (R) 13 I believe that I shall see the bounty of the LORD in the land of the living. 14 Wait for the LORD with courage; be stouthearted, and wait for the LORD. (R)

2nd READING

Paul knows where the focus of his life must be and what this means as far as living his daily Christian walk. Nothing in this life has meaning if it is removed from our faith in Christ. Even eating is a useless task if we do not believe in Christ as all it does is prolong our mortal life for a few more hours. If we believe in Christ, it gives us added time to experience God’s love, discern His will and give our lives in His service. What a difference faith in God makes.

Philippians 3:17-4:1 or 3:20-4:1
17 Join with others in being imitators of me, brothers, and observe those who thus conduct themselves according to the model you have in us. 18 For many, as I have often told you and now tell you even in tears, conduct themselves as enemies of the cross of Christ. 19 Their end is destruction. Their God is their stomach; their glory is in their “shame.” Their minds are occupied with earthly things. 20 But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we also await a savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. 21 He will change our lowly body to conform with his glorified body by the power that enables him also to bring all things into subjection to himself. 4: 1 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, in this way stand firm in the Lord.

G O S P E L

At the Transfiguration, a feast we celebrate every second Sunday of Easter, we are invited to recognize the divine origins of Jesus and see His place in the plan of salvation. No matter how important the Law and the Prophets may have been to Israel, Jesus surpasses them both; He fulfills them and draws them together  in His person as the definitive revelation of God’s love for us. Let us draw great hope and inspiration from this story; hope that we will become one with Jesus as are Moses and Elijah; inspiration that we will give our lives in the service of the Gospel as the great men and women of faith have done in the past.

Luke 9:28b-36
28 Jesus took Peter, John, and James and went up the mountain to pray. 29 While he was praying his face changed in appearance and his clothing became dazzling white. 30 And behold, two men were conversing with him, Moses and Elijah, 31 who appeared in glory and spoke of his exodus that he was going to accomplish in Jerusalem. 32 Peter and his companions had been overcome by sleep, but becoming fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. 33 As they were about to part from him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good that we are here; let us make three tents, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” But he did not know what he was saying. 34 While he was still speaking, a cloud came and cast a shadow over them, and they became frightened when they entered the cloud. 35 Then from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is my chosen Son; listen to him.” 36 After the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. They fell silent and did not at that time tell anyone what they had seen.

my reflections
t h i n k : Nothing in this life has meaning if it is removed from our faith in Christ.

Mountain Experiences
Since my childhood, I have liked mountain climbing. One of the greatn experiences was when I climbed Mount Sinai with a pilgrim group. Three hours up and up and up. Mount Sinai is in the desert and so you don’t have trees or bushes, only stones and rocks. The last part was exceptionally difficult. But then, once on top of the mountain, all effort and pain and suffering was forgotten. The sunrise and the splendid view were more than a reward. On top of a high mountain, you get a wider perspective; you see things not anymore narrowly as in the valley.
Jesus had spoken about His approaching suffering and death. He had mentioned His resurrection but obviously His disciples did not understand what it meant. They focused on His suffering, on His death only.
And so Jesus took them up a high mountain to widen their perspective. For a few moments, they were graced to have a glimpse of His divine glory; they began to understand what He meant with resurrection. Suffering and death would not be the end; something beautiful, something indescribable was waiting beyond death. They saw the light of eternal life at the faraway horizon.
The Church presents us every year on the second Sunday of Lent with the gospel of the Transfiguration. Last Sunday we heard how Christ was tempted and remembered our own temptations. We are called to resist Satan and repent of our sins. All this can be dark and hard to take. And so we are invited today to join the three apostles up a mountain. We are reminded that sufferings are not the end of our journey through life. Something beautiful lies ahead. Facing the reality of suffering in daily life, God provides us again and again with moments of peace and joy, with moments of feeling ourselves close to God. Cherish these moments; thank God for such moments because He grants them to give us the strength to face and conquer what lies ahead. Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD

Reflection Question:
Do I focus only or too much on suffering and problems? Do I appreciate when God grants me moments of joy and inner peace?

Lord, life is difficult. Thank You for granting me “mountain experiences” once in a while when You let me realize that actually life is beautiful, foreshadowing the even more beautiful eternal life. May suffering never blind me to this truth.

Blessed Villana, pray for us.
