Joachim and Anne, parents of the Virgin Mary SEEK GOD INTENTIONALLY “I will open my mouth in parables...” – Matthew 13:35 Whenever I meet children, just for fun I always ask them this question, “How old were you when you were born?” Before they answer, I follow up with this statement, “Remember, you were nine months inside your mother’s womb before you were born.” And that confuses them even more. Some of them would answer, “Nine months.” Others reply, “I was born when I was one year old.” Most of them insist, “Zero — no age yet!” In any case, at all times, I tell them to ask their parents the answer. Why do I confuse them? So that they will learn to seek an answer to a query they thought was obvious. Why do you think Jesus used parables to proclaim the Kingdom of God? Why did He not just use plain, easy-to-understand stories? He did this because He wanted us to seek Him intentionally. If you have questions about life, go to your Father, seek Him and you will find the real answers. | | COMPANION | 1st READING Who are the heroes of faith that you look up to for inspiration? Now compare them with the so-called heroes of the present day — the sports, music and entertainment heroes. Whose life is more inspiring? Who among them have had the greater and better influence on more number of people? Jeremiah 13:1-11 1 The LORD said to me: Go buy yourself a linen loincloth; wear it on your loins, but do not put it in water. 2 I bought the loincloth, as the LORD commanded, and put it on. 3 A second time the word of the LORD came to me thus: 4 Take the loincloth which you bought and are wearing, and go now to the Parath; there hide it in a cleft of the rock. 5 Obedient to the LORD’s command, I went to the Parath and buried the loincloth. 6 After a long interval, he said to me: Go now to the Parath and fetch the loincloth which I told you to hide there. 7 Again I went to the Parath, sought out and took the loincloth from the place where I had hid it. But it was rotted, good for nothing! 8 Then the message came to me from the LORD. 9 Thus says the LORD: So also I will allow the pride of Judah to rot, the great pride of Jerusalem. 10 This wicked people who refuse to obey my words, who walk in the stubbornness of their hearts, and follow strange gods to serve and adore them, shall be like this loincloth which is good for nothing. 11 For, as close as the loincloth clings to a man’s loins, so had I made the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah cling to me, says the LORD; to be my people, my renown, my praise, my beauty. But they did not listen. P S A L M Deuteronomy 32:18-19, 20, 21 R: You have forgotten God who gave you birth. 18 You were unmindful of the Rock that begot you, you forgot the God who gave you birth. 19 When the LORD saw this, he was filled with loathing and anger toward his sons and daughters. (R) 20 “I will hide my face from them,” he said, “and see what will then become of them. What a fickle race they are, sons with no loyalty in them!” (R) 21 “Since they have provoked me with their ‘no-god’ and angered me with their vain idols, I will provoke them with a ‘no-people’; with a foolish nation I will anger them.” (R) G O S P E L It takes effort on our part to hear and see the words and works of God in our time. If we are not willing to pay the cost of discipleship, we will fail to reap its benefits as well. Ultimately the cost is very little when we consider that the reward is eternal life. Jesus paid for His discipleship with His life. I hope we are willing to do the same. Matthew 13:31-35 31Jesus proposed a parable to the crowds. “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that a person took and sowed in a field. 32 It is the smallest of all the seeds, yet when full-grown it is the largest of plants. It becomes a large bush, and the ‘birds of the sky come and dwell in its branches.’ ” 33 He spoke to them another parable. “The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed with three measures of wheat flour until the whole batch was leavened.” 34 All these things Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables. He spoke to them only in parables, 35 to fulfill what had been said through the prophet: “I will open my mouth in parables, I will announce what has lain hidden from the foundation of the world.” Judith 9-12 my reflections think: If we are not willing to pay the cost of discipleship, we will fail to reap its benefits as well. _________________________________________________________

| | SABBATH | THE PRECIOUS GIFT OF LIFE The readings for today speak of how seeds grow into shrubs or trees. The same is true for the seed of life from which each human being begins. We celebrate today the Feast of Sts. Joachim and Anne, the parents of Mary. It is difficult to discern any greater gift we can give to a person than the gift of life itself, yet we seem to be living in a world that no longer upholds the sanctity of this gift. More and more each day, we discover the degree to which the utilitarian concept of the human person has taken over the way we think as a society. The debate between abortionists and pro-lifers continues. Is an embryo just an amorphous mass of cells or actually a human life? The problem is that it is never simply an indeterminate mass of cells. From the very beginning, the gametes carry the genetic programming from which a new human life can develop. The only sensible and defensible position to take is to say that human life is there right from the start and thus we must treat any embryo with the same degree of respect that we give to any human being that is born into the world. If we lose this fundamental respect for life, it will not be long before society implodes on itself in an ever growing spiral of self-absorption. It is precisely here that we begin to close in on the heart of the matter. We become more obsessed with our own concerns and comfort that we are less willing to sacrifice for the good of another person, even our own offspring. A child now would be an added burden to our finances — a cry that is often heard in justifying abortion. It may be true that another child is a financial burden to the family; well then, it is time to be more sexually responsible by abstaining from sex when there is a high likelihood of pregnancy.Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL Reflection Question: Today the world is experiencing a crisis in peoples’ willingness to act responsibly. Am I part of this problem or am I an example of the solution? Holy Spirit, help me to live a responsible life by recognizing the effects of my actions and thus choosing to avoid the acts that will result to things I am not ready to embrace.
