SWEET BURDEN

“For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.” – Matthew 11:30

“You can only do this job if you love the person you are caring for,” testified a woman who lovingly cared for her husband to the very end of his 10-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
I took much comfort from her words as I took care of my dad who had lung cancer. Dad succumbed to his illness after only four months from his diagnosis but still I experienced the emotional and physical demands of caring for a seriously-ill loved one. Day and night I was “on call” for him. In prayer I asked the Lord, “Do You really believe I can carry this load on my own? Help me! I’m going to break down.” But His abundant grace enabled me to go on. He reminded me to look to Jesus, His beloved Son, who lovingly embraced the Cross.
During the last two weeks of his life, I remained at his side, prayed with him and made each moment count. I was blessed to witness Dad breathe his last and peacefully return to His Maker no matter how painful it was to see him die. I then realized that all those months of sacrifice and service for Dad were a lesson in selflessness, a sweet burden made easy and light by Jesus who loved him infinitely more than I ever could.Dina Pecaña (dpecana@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
Make each moment count with the people you love.

“Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” (Psalm 90:12)

COMPANION

1st READING

God yearns for the person who is righteous, who acts with a humble and contrite heart. This is good news for us as it makes it possible for us to move in that spirit, if we allow the Holy Spirit to inspire such motivations within us. That is what He wants to do; it is not as if we have to convince Him that such things are necessary.

Isaiah 26:7-9, 12, 16-19
7 The way of the just is smooth; the path of the just you make level. 8 Yes, for your way and your judgments, O LORD, we look to you; your name and your title are the desire of our souls. 9 My soul yearns for you in the night, yes, my spirit within me keeps vigil for you; when your judgment dawns upon the earth, the world’s inhabitants learn justice. 12 O LORD, you mete out peace to us, for it is you who have accomplished all we have done. 16 O LORD, oppressed by your punishment, we cried out in anguish under your chastising. 17 As a woman about to give birth writhes and cries out in her pains, so were we in your presence, O LORD. 18 We conceived and writhed in pain, giving birth to wind; salvation we have not achieved for the earth, the inhabitants of the world cannot bring it forth. 19 But your dead shall live, their corpses shall rise; awake and sing, you who lie in the dust. For your dew is a dew of light, and the land of shades gives birth.

P S A L M

Psalm 102:13-14ab, 15, 16-18, 19-21
R: The Lord will not abandon his people.
12 [13] You, O LORD, abide forever, and your name through all generations. 13 [14] You will arise and have mercy on Zion, for it is time to pity her. 14 [15] For her stones are dear to your servants, and her dust moves them to pity. (R) 15 [16] And the nations shall revere your name, O LORD, and all the kings of the earth your glory, 16 [17] when the LORD has rebuilt Zion and appeared in his glory; 17 [18] when he has regarded the prayer of the destitute, and not despised their prayer. (R) 18 [19] Let this be written for the generation to come, and let his future creatures praise the LORD: 19 [20] “The LORD looked down from his holy height, from heaven he beheld the earth, 20 [21] To hear the groaning of the prisoners, to release those doomed to die.” (R)

G O S P E L

Jesus does not promise us that there will be no burdens in the life of a disciple but that if we entrust them to Him, they become bearable and even light. This is good news as we probably have enough burdens in life already without them being anymore associated with the life of faith. This is just another sign of God’s great love for us — a further proof of His commitment to our welfare. Let us seek to entrust all our burdens to Him.

Matthew 11:28-30
28 Jesus said: “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for your selves. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.”

my reflections
t h i n k : Jesus does not promise us that there will be no burdens in the life of a disciple but that if we entrust them to Him, they will become bearable and even light.

SABBATH

ST. BONAVENTURE AND THE MIND OF GOD

St. Bonaventure is one of the greatest theologians of the Franciscan Order. His writings on the mind and heart of God are still important sources of thought hundreds of years after his death. It shows that the truth is immutable and endures from age to age. This is why we need to seek the truth and make it the foundation of our lives and reject the fads of our time which are usually shallow and meaningless.
The Saints of the Church discover truths about the Christian life that command their attention and energy. These truths set them on a path that serves as an example for all to follow. This is what sets apart lives that will be remembered for their everlasting significance and those that will be forgotten by the next generation. I think there is something in us that desires to leave a legacy for the generations to come, but are we willing to focus our lives so that this will be realized? Sportsmen have a singular purpose in life — to set a record — and so often they are forgotten once their world record is broken or their career is over. Yet, these people train several hours a day to earn a wreath that is going to wither and die and be passed to another person. This is a challenge to Christians today to get serious about their faith and focus on living their lives to the full rather than allowing themselves to be distracted by the fads around us.
If all Christians were as committed to their faith as some sportsmen are to their sport, I am sure the world would be a very different place. A Christian lifestyle 24/7 is not an option for Christians; it is a must! Let us be faithful to our calling and be the Christian witness we are meant to be in the world. Let us live and create a Christian sub-culture that will challenge the materialistic hedonism that is fast consuming humanity today. Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
Is my life dedicated to living the fullness of the Christian Gospel or am I given over, even partially, to the hedonistic materialism of our day?

Father, help me to realize that there is nothing more satisfying than giving my life in Your service. Help me to remain faithful to the Gospel 24/7.

St. Vladimir, pray for us.
