“You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” – Luke 10:27

These were some of the things taught to us back in the ‘60s when we would sit down in church for our Catechism classes. Yes, that was more than 40 years ago, but I still vividly remember how we, as little children, would gather to listen to Bible stories, pray and recite the rosary, sing, etc. We learned how to love God, to obey our parents and elders, to follow the Ten Commandments, to be God-fearing and prayerful. With child-like faith, we grew up believing in God’s unconditional love and the teachings of the Church.
We carried with us the things we learned as we traveled through life. They’re carved so deeply in our hearts that whenever we falter, we remember the things we learned from our Catechism classes. We pause and ponder and ask ourselves, “Are these the things we learned when we were kids?” Then we reflect on life’s lessons. We go to confession. We receive communion. We start anew. In this lifetime, there are some things that never change. And this is one of them: “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.”Dr. Henry Yu (henrio_md@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
We need God in our life no matter how old we have become, or how much fame and fortune we have acquired. There is no better way than to live life according to His teachings and commandments.

Father, help us to remain the God-fearing kids of yesteryears with that child-like faith in You and all that You have taught us. Let the child in us live forever in Your loving care.

1st READING

Even in the Old Testament understanding of faith, there is a very strong idea of “the Word.” In Genesis we read that it is by the “Word of God” that the world was made. All through history God speaks His Word to us through patriarchs, judges, kings, prophets and finally through His incarnate Son, Jesus. I think the most important message we can draw from this is that we are supposed to listen to God and what He wants to tell us.

Deuteronomy 30:10-14
10 Moses said to the people: “If only you heed the voice of the LORD, your God, and keep his commandments and statutes that are written in this book of the law, when you return to the LORD, your God, with all your heart and all your soul. 11 “For this command which I enjoin on you today is not too mysterious and remote for you. 12 It is not up in the sky, that you should say, ‘Who will go up in the sky to get it for us and tell us of it, that we may carry it out?’ 13 Nor is it across the sea, that you should say, ‘Who will cross the sea to get it for us and tell us of it, that we may carry it out?’ 14 No, it is something very near to you, already in your mouths and in your hearts; you have only to carry it out.”

P S A L M

Psalm 69:14, 17, 30-31, 33-34, 36, 37
R: Turn to the Lord in your need, and you will live.
13 [14] I pray to you, O LORD, for the time of your favor, O God! In your great kindness answer me with your constant help. 16 [17] Answer me, O LORD, for bounteous is your kindness; in your great mercy turn toward me. (R) 29 [30] I am afflicted and in pain; let your saving help, O God, protect me. 30 [31] I will praise the name of God in song, and I will glorify him with thanksgiving. (R) 32 [33] “See, you lowly ones, and be glad; you who seek God, may your hearts revive! 33 [34] For the LORD hears the poor, and his own who are in bonds he spurns not.” (R) 35 [36] For God will save Zion and rebuild the cities of Judah. 36 [37] The descendants of his servants shall inherit it, and those who love his name shall inhabit it. (R)

2nd READING

This excerpt from St. Paul’s Letter to the Colossians is full of descriptions of Jesus that we cannot possibly cover them all so we will just focus on one. Paul tells us that Jesus is the Head of the body, the Church. This understanding initiates us into a mystery — Jesus is the head of His body, the Church. It seems that when it comes to Jesus there are more mysteries than answers as to how we all relate together in Christ. Let us focus on living the mystery than having to always understand everything first.

Colossians 1:15-20
15 Christ Jesus is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For in him were created all things in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers; all things were created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 He is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things he himself might be preeminent. 19 For in him all the fullness was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him to reconcile all things for him, making peace by the blood of his cross through him, whether those on earth or those in heaven.

G O S P E L

We have all probably heard the parable of the Good Samaritan many times and think we understand what it means, and we perhaps do understand what it means. However, the question is not so much of understanding, but whether or not we put it into practice. It is only through the witness of our lives that we demonstrate the depth of our faith — anyone can be very knowledgeable about God, but only someone of faith can put this knowledge into practice.

Luke 10:25-37
25 There was a scholar of the law who stood up to test him and said, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 Jesus said to him, “What is written In the law? How do you read it?” 27 He said in reply, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” 28 He replied to him, “You have answered correctly; do this and you will live.” 29 But because he wished to justify himself, he said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30 Jesus replied, “A man fell victim to robbers as he went down from Jerusalem to Jericho. They stripped and beat him and went off leaving him half-dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down that road, but when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. 32 Likewise a Levite came to the place, and when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. 33 But a Samaritan traveler who came upon him was moved with compassion at the sight. 34 He approached the victim, poured oil and wine over his wounds and bandaged them. Then he lifted him up on his own animal, took him to an inn and cared for him. 35 The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper with the instruction, ‘Take care of him. If you spend more than what I have given you, I shall repay you on my way back.’ 36 Which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbor to the robbers’ victim?” 37 He answered, “The one who treated him with mercy.” Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”

WHO IS MY NEIGHBOR?

Perhaps there is no more searching question in today’s individualistic world than the title of this reflection. The more one looks at secular materialism as a philosophy and culture, the more one will be convinced that the individualism that underpins it is destructive of the human dignity of each person. It is as though we are being taught that we exist as entities unto ourselves and the fundamental interconnectedness of persons in society slowly loses its place in our  lives. The whole concept of the “common good” seems to be slowly being lost to human society. If this is the case, then we had better prepare ourselves for social disaster.
In fact, there is no time to prepare for it because it is already upon us. The breakdown of marriages and the traditional family structure is one of its signs, as is drug and alcohol abuse and the growing disrespect of youth for their elders. The real question is, what are we going to do about this problem? Those who deny there is a problem, need to open their eyes and take a real look at the world around them. The vast inequity in the distribution of world’s goods, both nationwide and worldwide, needs to be addressed immediately or the social disaster that faces us now will get bigger. The desperation that poverty breeds will lead to more and more violent crime. If the response of the rich to this is to further insulate their lives from the poor, then the problem will get worse. The Church calls us to stand in solidarity with one another. We must learn to treat every person as our neighbor and do what we can to build relationships with all people.
The language of blame may have its place in limited situations but it cannot be legitimately used to address the broader problem. Remember, when you point your finger at someone else, there are three more pointing back at you. Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
What am I doing to build bridges with the people around me? How am I growing in relationship with the poor/rich and in solidarity with my neighbor?

Jesus, show me who my neighbour is and grant me the grace to stand in solidarity with them all, no matter how different our backgrounds may be.

St. Oliver Plunkett, pray for us.
