SEND ME

“Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?’ “Here I am,” I said; “send me!’” – Isaiah 6:8

Five years ago, I attempted to do an “Isaiah” and told the Lord to “send” me wherever He wanted. Opportunities to visit our community’s branches nationwide came one after another. I particularly remember the week-long trip I made to Mindanao with our National Women’s Moderator, Mylene. Although I prepared and prayed for the talks she assigned to me, I was unaware that there was so much more expected from us. There were many invitations to meals and to tour places of interest, aside from the many who wanted counsel or just to chat with us. In the evenings, we attended prayer meetings, gave our talks and then fellowshipped some more. We were exhausted at the end of each day but thankful to the Lord.
I wonder if Isaiah knew what was in store for him when he made himself available to the Lord. Did he realize the sacrifice he needed to fulfill his mission? Isaiah may not have fully known the consequences of carrying out theLord’s work but he did it anyway — out of obedience to God and through the outpouring of graces upon him. After all, Isaiah was God’s anointed messenger, just as I believe Mylene and I were. Dina Pecaña (dpecana@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
Will you go wherever the Lord will send you?

Lord, lead me by the right road though I may know nothing about it. I will trust You always. I will not fear for You are ever with me and will never leave me to face my struggles
alone. Amen. (Prayer for the Journey, Thomas Merton)

COMPANION

1st READING

The first 40 chapters of Isaiah are contemporaneous with Isaiah and cover similar ground. Here we have the call of Isaiah and his purification by fire. I hope I will never have to undergo such purification. Yet it seems to do him little harm and it certainly in no way hinders his speech and the clarity of his message. Lord, I pray You purify my lips and tongue so that they will only speak of Your love and truth to others.

Isaiah 6:1-8
1 In the year King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a high and lofty throne, with the train of his garment filling the temple. 2 Seraphim were stationed above; each of them had six wings; with two they veiled their faces, with two they veiled their feet, and with two they hovered aloft. 3 “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts!” they cried one to the other. “All the earth is filled with his glory!” 4 At the sound of that cry, the frame of the door shook and the house was filled with smoke. 5 Then I said, “Woe is me, I am doomed! For I am a man of unclean lips, living among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts!” 6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me, holding an ember which he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 He touched my mouth with it. “See,” he said, “now that this has touched your lips, your wickedness is removed, your sin purged.” 8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?” “Here I am,” I said; “send me!”

P S A L M

Psalm 93:1ab, 1cd-2, 5
R: The Lord is king; he is robed in majesty.
1 The LORD is king, in splendor robed; robed is the LORD and girt about with strength. (R) And he has made the world firm, not to be moved. 2 Your throne stands firm from of old; from everlasting you are, O LORD. (R) 5 Your decrees are worthy of trust indeed: holiness befits your house, O LORD, for length of days. (R)

G O S P E L
God is in control. Do you believe this? If you do not, then you are going to be in for a very difficult and disappointing time in mission. We do what we can and leave the rest up to God. This is the way to proclaim the Gospel. If we rely on our own gifts and talents, we may have the wrong focus. God wants us to use the gifts He has given us but never to the exclusion of the truth that He is the one who brings increase to the faith community. We are His instruments, but He remains the main player.

Matthew 10:24-33
24 Jesus said to his Apostles: “No disciple is above his teacher, no slave above his master. 25 It is enough for the disciple that he become like his teacher, for the slave that he become like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more those of his household! 26 “Therefore do not be afraid of them. Nothing is concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known. 27 What I say to you in the darkness, speak in the light; what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. 28 And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father’s knowledge. 30 Even all the hairs of your head are counted. 31 So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. 32 Everyone who acknowledges me before others I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father. 33 But whoever denies me before others, I will deny before my heavenly Father.”

my reflections
t h i n k : God wants us to use the gifts He has given us but never to the exclusion of the truth that He is the one who brings increase to the faith community.

SABBATH

HUMILITY: THE ESSENCE OF DISCIPLESHIP

True discipleship is built on the foundation of humility — humility that is never far from the surface of any relationship, either as a leader or a follower. This is one of the greatest lessons we can learn in life — to be a humble person. It is the life of a humble person that will stay with us as an example of an inspiring faith. The truly humble person knows how to lead with a certainty and firmness of belief yet with a gentleness of spirit that causes all to want to follow and not revolt.
Yes, there are times when discipleship will demand that we stand against an unjust ruler and thus we will have to choose resistance to their authority. But in all this, we must remain humble and focused on the truth. If revolution demands that we deny the truth or act immorally then we cannot support it as being God’s plan for us — the end never justifies the means. In order to live righteous lives, the means that we employ in a revolution, if that is what God demands, must always be good in themselves. This is why the Church can never support terror campaigns on the innocent as a licit means of obtaining one’s end, even if the goal is a just one. The grace of humility allows us to order our lives to the truth and thus protect ourselves from the excesses of sin. It is not an easy path to maintain particularly when one begins to rage against the injustices perpetrated upon humanity by the unjust. Yet, we only number ourselves among the unjust if we fail to employ just and right means to bring about change.
There can be legitimate recourse to armed resistance but it is always limited. In all of history, it is very rare, if ever, that armed aggression has ever resulted in lasting peace. The nature of war seems to always take its course and draw all involved into unspeakably inhuman actions against each other. This is why the Church tells us that armed struggle has to be the last resort. Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
How well am I cultivating humility in my life? What am I doing to grow in understanding and living this grace?

Jesus, You raised not an arm against Your aggressors — You were as a lamb to the slaughterer. Help me to grow in my capacity to resist injustice with love as You did.

St. Amalberga, pray for us.
