The show was about to begin, so the couple quickly walked to their seats. They didn’t know that their little boy went straight to the stage. There he saw a beautiful great grand piano. He slipped past through the curtain, sat on the bench, and marveled at the gleaming, ivory keys. Then the curtain pulled away. The audience thought he was part of the concert. With his little hands, the boy began to play “Chopsticks” to the delight of the crowd. Then the boy felt two arms around him. The world-renowned master pianist stood behind him and began to play a Beethoven symphony adjusted to the “Chopsticks” melody. On the master’s cue, the 101-piece orchestra began to play along. It was the most beautiful rendition of “Chopsticks” the world had ever heard. What made the difference? The Master stepped in. Even if you only know “Chopsticks,” play it anyway. Work with what you have. Be the best that you can be. Because the Father stands behind you, His arms around you, creating a miracle in you. Work with a just wage is an inherent part of the dignity of the human person. The Church must never shrink from proclaiming to the world this truth and the truth of the dignity of the human person.   Genesis 1:26-2:3 (or Acts 11:19-26) 26 God said: “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and the cattle, and over all the wild animals and all the creatures that crawl on the ground.” 27 God created man in his image; in the divine image he created him; male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them, saying: “Be fertile and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and all the living things that move on the earth.” 29 God also said: “See, I give you every seed-bearing plant all over the earth and every tree that has seed-bearing fruit on it to be your food; 30 and to all the animals of the land, all the birds of the air, and all the living creatures that crawl on the ground, I give all the green plants for food.” And so it happened. 31 God looked at everything he had made, and he found it very good. (R)   GOSPEL   Sometimes it is difficult to do the right thing especially if it will disadvantage you or your business. However, we all have a moral duty to pay a just wage to our employees as a way of respecting their dignity as human beings. Let us pray for the conviction to protect human dignity in every way we possibly can.   GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Blessed be the Lord day by day, God, our salvation, who bears our burdens.   Matthew 13:54-58 (or John 10:22-30) 54 Jesus came to his native place and taught the people in their synagogue. It became a celebration of the international labor movement and left-wing movements that organized street demonstrations and marches by the working class. Red flags during these demonstrations indicated a strong Communist influence. In response to the growing number of “May Day” celebrations for workers sponsored by Communists, Pope Pius XII instituted the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker in 1955. As today’s Gospel indicates, Jesus was known as “the carpenter’s son.” In another passage the people wonder, “Isn’t he the carpenter?” The translation of the word “carpenter” is actually misleading. The Greek word used by the evangelists, “tekton,” means a craftsman who works on hard materials, wood, stone and iron. Since Nazareth then was a very small place of not more than 300 people, Joseph would not have earned enough to sustain his family. Seemingly he, and later the growing up Jesus, might have worked in nearby Sepphoris, a city which Herod Antipas rebuilt just during that time and where he needed many craftsmen. It was a hard life for Joseph and his family. When he died, seemingly Jesus took over his work to support His mother Mary. Labor, the Church teaches, is not punishment for the sin of the first parents, but cooperation with God’s ongoing creative activity in the world. Pius XII once said, “Sin has made it very painful to work upon the land, but it was not sin which brought labor into the world.” Work, therefore, belongs to the dignity of man because it makes him a collaborator with God. We find dignity in our work, in raising a family, in participating in God’s creative activity. If we would see our work as such, it would become less boring and more fulfilling. Fr. Do you do it gladly or do you feel forced and burdened by it?   Lord, I am glad to realize that You, too, worked hard when You were growing up. When I joined this group, I had been in the corporate world for almost 20 years and in business with my wife for more than 10 years. While they gave retreats, I spoke in business seminars. While they counselled people to forgive, I asserted my opinions or even argued on how to handle difficulties in our organization. It was a totally different world from the one that my caring group moved in. It was easy for me to doubt if I was walking the right path with the Lord. Peter must have had the same temptation when he was criticized for associating with the Gentiles. But God made it clear to him that He was expanding his mission field to include non-Jews. Now it’s clear to me that I am as much in the forefront of ministry as my brothers who serve Him in a full-time capacity. I am in the middle of my mission field and I am called to witness in my worldly circumstances. This radical idea, present in the ministry of Jesus but never explicitly stated in an unequivocal manner, is one we have to be grateful for as we would never have received the Gospel without it. We need to remember that our evangelical activity must include presenting and proclaiming the truths of the Gospel to all men and women. If they choose to reject it, that is their choice. It is our duty and responsibility to make sure we proclaim it to those God places before us.   Acts 11:1-18 1 The Apostles and the brothers who were in Judea heard that the Gentiles too had accepted the word of God. 2 So when Peter went up to Jerusalem the circumcised believers confronted him, 3 saying, “You entered the house of uncircumcised people and ate with them.” 4 Peter began and explained it to them step by step, saying, 5 “I was at prayer in the city of Joppa when in a trance I had a vision, something resembling a large sheet coming down, lowered from the sky by its four corners, and it came to me. 6 Looking intently into it, I observed and saw the four-legged animals of the earth, the wild beasts, the reptiles, and the birds of the sky. 7 I also heard a voice say to me, ‘Get up, Peter. Slaughter and eat.’ 8 But I said, ‘Certainly not, sir, because nothing profane or unclean has ever entered my mouth.’ 9 But a second time a voice from heaven answered, ‘What God has made clean, you are not to call profane.’ 10 This happened three times, and then everything was drawn up again into the sky. 11 Just then three men appeared at the house where we were, who had been sent to me from Caesarea. 12 The Spirit told me to accompany them without discriminating. (R)   GOSPEL   The desire of God is that all men and women be saved. The reality of this desire is that God has chosen to use us to bring the Gospel to those who have never heard it. We have all experienced the restlessness within that can only be sated with the truth of the Gospel. This restlessness is in all people. Let us do what we can to bring the truth of the Gospel to them so that they can know and experience the peace that only God can give.   GOSPEL ACCLAMATION I am the good shepherd, says the Lord; I know my sheep, and mine know me.   John 10:1-10 1 Jesus said: “Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever does not enter a sheepfold through the gate but climbs over elsewhere is a thief and a robber. 2 But whoever enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 The gatekeeper opens it for him, and the sheep hear his voice, as he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has driven out all his own, he walks ahead of them, and the sheep follow him, because they recognize his voice. 5 But they will not follow a stranger; they will run away from him, because they do not recognize the voice of strangers.” 6 Although Jesus used this figure of speech, they did not realize what he was trying to tell them. 7 So Jesus said again, “Amen, amen, I say to you, I am the gate for the sheep. 8 All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9 I am the gate. Whoever enters through me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. 10 A thief comes only to steal and slaughter and destroy; I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly.” READING 2nd READING LIST think: God has chosen to use us to bring the Gospel to those who have never heard it.   T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________   _______________________________________________________   God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________   READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Numbers 29-33   Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top SABBATH   LIFE TO THE FULL   This is one of the most beautiful self-descriptions of Jesus in the Bible. A common image was that of the shepherd in Ancient Palestine. Many have tried to recapture the image of Jesus the Good Shepherd in art and song. The sheep of the Ancient East were called by name and given special treatment. Sheep are known to be fussy animals; they do not like cold weather. They  don’t even like stirred water; they only follow familiar sounds. One interesting technique of the shepherds is to lie across the passage of the sheepfold at night. The sheep are all called in to the sheepfold, away from the dangers of the night in the form of wolves and thieves. Jesus here calls Himself the gate — the passage through which the sheep enter. He has given us access to His life and He wants to give us life to the full. The thief, namely Satan, wants to destroy us and keep us away from the benefits that Jesus offers. The resurrection of Jesus that we celebrate these days focuses on the life that Jesus offers us. For 40 days, we celebrate Jesus who has risen, conquered death and sin, and shows us the way to eternal life. All of us are looking for life. This Easter season teaches us that there is life eternal in Jesus alone. In Him we find pasture, that is, goodness for our souls, mercy and peace, justice and love. However, we tend to think that the grass is greener on the other side of the fence. The first thing we want to do when we encounter problems is to escape to the other side. We want to avoid pain, suffering and death. However, in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, we see that there is a way out of every sin and every problem that we encounter. The sheep in the story takes no notice of the thief or brigand. They do not recognize his voice. Jesus, the Good Shepherd, speaks and we hear His voice. We need to learn to hear that voice, not those of others that cause confusion and disorder in our lives. There are many voices but only one is the voice of the Good Shepherd. Let us learn to listen to the voice, a voice that speaks of peace for His people and friends (Psalm 122). Fr. This is how I describe my last few weeks in Port Moresby. I was ending my three-year stint in the city. I worked in a secular job but I was active in Charismatic circles in the archdiocese, where I had the opportunity to preach the Good News. During those years, my brothers-in-the-Lord in the archdiocese treated me with much love and adulation. They accepted me as their own. At the last prayer meetings I attended in the different parishes, many were in tears when I announced that I will soon be leaving. Hugs, prayers, well-wishes and even gifts oveflowed. I was with family. When I rejoined the Light of Jesus Family in Manila, the same love and acceptance flowed. When members here learned that brethren from Papua New Guinea were coming for a conference in Manila, many came forward to help me host them. How wonderful it is to be in God’s family! There is no more important relationship in our lives than the one we have with Jesus. This is why setting time aside for prayer is not optional. It is as important for our spiritual health as a good diet is for our physical body. (R)   2ND READING   How often do we reflect on the truth that one day, if we go to heaven, we will be united with the Trinity? Is there any more awesome thought than that one we could consider? It is important to have a vision for where we are going or else we will be easily deflected from the true path of faith. Let us not give the devil this opportunity by being firmly convinced of our ultimate destiny — unity with the Trinity.   1 John 3:1-2 1 Beloved: See what love the Father has bestowed on us that we may be called the children of God. Yet so we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we shall be has not yet been revealed. We do know that when it is revealed we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.   GOSPEL   Jesus is the Good Shepherd. One of the goals of Pope John Paul II was to reform the training of priests so that they would be better shepherds. This desire is seen in his writing, Pastores Dabo Vobis, (I Will Give Them Shepherds). It is essential that we pray not just for our priests but also those training to become priests so that they develop the heart of the Good Shepherd and learn the means of maintaining it — that is, by prayer and holy life.   GOSPEL ACCLAMATION I am the good shepherd, says the Lord; I know my sheep, and mine know me.   John 10:11-18 11 Jesus said: I am the good shepherd. A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 A hired man, who is not a shepherd and whose sheep are not his own, sees a wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away, and the wolf catches and scatters them. 13 This is because he works for pay and has no concern for the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd, and I know mine and mine know me, 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I will lay down my life for the sheep. 16 I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. The readings refer to the Good Shepherd, a popular and well-loved image. It is also celebrated as Vocation Sunday where we are encouraged to pray for vocations to priesthood and religious life. The sheep listen to the voice of the shepherd and follow him. Let us pray this day for followers of the Good Shepherd who imitate Him by giving their lives for the sake of the Gospel. The Father loves Jesus since He lays down His life for His sheep. The Father loves us all, but He is especially drawn to the man and woman who seek a life of loving service. Jesus tells us that He lays His life down freely. His will is completely surrendered to the will of the Father. He knows the Father gives Him power to lay it down and take it up. This is the power of the Resurrection. By virtue of our baptism, we are called to lay down our life for service in the Kingdom of God. Many are called but few are chosen to the religious life and the call to priesthood. We live in a world that is very egocentric — all about me. The one who follows the Lord as priest or religious is swimming against the tide of the world. So many things claim the attention of the youth today to distract them and turn them away from serving God. So, when we witness and hear a call to the religious life, we are amazed at what the Lord, the Good Shepherd, can achieve in weak human beings whose hearts are open to Him. His is the power at work in them, offering their lives to the glory of His name. Countless men and women have served the Lord in this way. Still the Lord calls His people. Let us pray for vocations. Let us especially call to mind those whom we know or whom we should approach to discover the call of God in their lives. Perhaps they are waiting to be asked. Sometimes, all it takes is an invitation to consider a call to religious life. It happened to me. It could happen to you. Be open. Fr.
