CHANGING OUR FAMILY’S CULTURE

1
Every day they devoted themselves to… breaking bread in their homes. – Acts 2:46

As a family, there was a time when we would eat with a purple dinosaur named Barney blaring on the TV screen. And while the kids watched, I read Newsweek and my wife answered her phone calls. I must admit, many of our breakfasts, lunches and dinners were chaotic.
One day, my wife said, “Enough is enough. Let’s focus on each other during mealtime. Let’s engage!” I agreed with her. Each meal should be sacred. We had a family meeting and we explained it to the boys.
Since then no purple dinosaurs were allowed during meals. No phone calls accepted unless it was the President on the line. No text messages, too, unless it was Pope Benedict texting me a theological question he wants my opinion about. No newspapers or books or toys near the table.
Instead, we focus on each other, swap stories, ask questions and laugh a lot. At breakfast, we ask each other, “What does your day look like?” At dinnertime, we ask each other, “How was your day?”
It’s been fabulous. (Thank you, Sweets.) That’s what you call culture change.Bo Sanchez (bosanchez@kerygmafamily.com)

REFLECTION:
How do you break bread with the people who matter in your life?

Thank You, Lord, for sharing with us the beauty and grace of the Eucharist. Through it, may we share Your love with others, too.

COMPANION

1st READING

The basis of any human society are the traditions and practices that people hold in common. When these are lost or discarded, society loses its roots and becomes directionless. This is basically what we are experiencing today. Society seems to be rejecting its Judeo-Christian roots and embracing a secular relativism that shuns past traditions in favor of individualism. This is a recipe for disaster. The Early Church looked to the teaching and traditions of the Apostles as the basis of their common life. Today, as a society, we need to do the same.

Acts 2:42-47
42 They devoted themselves to the teaching of the apostles and to the communal life, to the breaking of the bread and to the prayers. 43 Awe came upon everyone, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. 44 All who believed were together and had all things in common; 45 they would sell their property and possessions and divide them among all according to each one’s need. 46 Every day they devoted themselves to meeting together in the temple area and to breaking bread in their homes. They ate their meals with exultation and sincerity of heart, 47 praising God and enjoying favor with all the people. And every day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.

P S A L M

Psalms 118:2-4, 13-15, 22-24
R: Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his love is everlasting.
2 Let the house of Israel say, “His mercy endures forever.” 3 Let the house of Aaron say, “His mercy endures forever.” 4 Let those who fear the LORD say, “His mercy endures forever.” (R) 13 I was hard pressed and was falling, but the LORD helped me. 14 My strength and my courage is the LORD, and he has been my savior. 15 The joyful shout of victory in the tents of the just: (R) 22 The stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. 23 By the LORD has this been done; it is wonderful in our eyes. 24 This is the day the LORD has made; let us be glad and rejoice in it. (R)

2nd READING

Peter reminds his listeners/readers of the roots of their faith and calls them to be faithful to them. He knows that if the Christian faith is to survive and become a light to all men and women, it will have to be built upon a commonly accepted foundation – namely the teachings and traditions of the Apostles. The Traditions that developed over the years have become the basis of our faith — an essential link to the person of Jesus through those closest to Him in His ministry.

1 Peter 1:3-9
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who in his great mercy gave us a new birth to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you 5 who by the power of God are safeguarded through faith, to a salvation that is ready to be revealed in the final time. 6 In this you rejoice, although now for a little while you may have to suffer through various trials, 7 so that the genuineness of your faith, more precious than gold that is perishable even though tested by fire, may prove to be for praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 8 Although you have not seen him you love him; even though you do not see him now yet believe in him, you rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy, 9 as you attain the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

G O S P E L

Thomas is at first doubtful of the claims of his fellow disciples. He becomes convinced of their message only when he personally sees Jesus. The same can be true for us in that we can be skeptical of the claims of those who say they know Jesus as a friend. However, our skepticism is baseless unless we open our hearts to the same experience. Let us all give God the opportunity to reveal Himself to us as a friend. I believe that God will always honor our searching if we do this.

ALLELUIA
R: Alleluia, alleluia
You believe in me, Thomas, because you have seen me, says the Lord; blessed are they who have not seen me, but still believe!
R: Alleluia, alleluia

John 20:19-31
19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” 22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” 24 Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples said to him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nailmarks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” 26 Now a week later his disciples were again inside and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, although the doors were locked, and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe.” 28 Thomas answered and said to him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus said to him, “Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.” 30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not written in this book. 31 But these are written that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name.

TEACHING, LIFE, BREAD AND PRAYERS

There was this story of an old man who, after back-breaking work in the fields, would drop by the church and stay there for hours each and every single day, with gaze focused on the Blessed Sacrament. The pastor sort of got curious and, one day, asked the old man what he did in church for so long every day. The old man answered the priest without batting an eyelash, “I look at Him and He looks at me, and I feel blessed for the day.”
He sure had commitment and dedication, not to mention single-mindedness. In his simple faith, the old man has taught us a whole lot about those values, and a whole lot more, about prayer.
It is hard for postmoderns like us to be focused on anything. Parents would worry about a thousand and one things first thing in the morning: what the children would wear, what they would bring to school, etc. Young adults have their own share of worries: how to blend in with their peer group and still maintain their uniqueness and autonomy; their ability or otherwise to keep up with what is fashionable and cool. Name it,
we have it: issues and concerns that occupy our waking and even our sleeping thoughts.
The early Christians, a very small band of believers then, must have had their own share of worries, issues and concerns, too. They did not exactly wake up to see a society warm and cuddly towards a group of followers of Someone the authorities had just condemned to death recently. They were not exactly liked by the powers that be in those days. And given the spreading rumors that their leader had reportedly risen from the dead, they sure had to watch their back as everyone suddenly became wary of that band of believers.
But their conviction that the Lord is risen led them to commitment and dedication. We all know what it was they committed and dedicated themselves to: His teachings, the communal life, the breaking of bread, the prayers — the whole works done by a serious follower of the Risen Lord. That old man sure got his priorities right!  Fr. Chito Dimaranan, SDB

Reflection Question:
How committed are you to live out your Christian life? What area of your spiritual life needs reinforcement?

Risen Lord, help me to rise up, too, and be worthy of my calling as a Christian.

St. Grata, pray for us.

A Corporate Commissioning

He said to them, “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature.” – Mark 16:15

We first met on a Marian pilgrimage in Europe. We have also been attending the same Catholic Charismatic gathering every Sunday. But the bonds of friendship also became a bond of business partnership. We formed a corporation to operate a healthcare franchise. On an out-of-town vacation together, we decided to hold our first board meeting. At the living room of our hotel room, we shared our visions for the company.
I spoke out that the business relationship would not be based on monetary terms but on God’s commission to this juridical entity. The business should speak of God’s glory the same way a person would boast of God. Our business should witness to its stakeholders — its owners, employees, suppliers and the government, among others. It would do business the way Jesus would have wanted it managed.
Initially, the company had financial difficulties but we, the owners, were not unsettled because profits were secondary. Along the way, we have seen God’s purpose and its commission — to implement the Father’s business.Rolly España (rnespana@nwineskin.com)

REFLECTION:
Is God part of your business planning process or do you leave everything to your own capabilities?

Father in heaven, I lift up all our business plans and goals to You. May it be a pleasing offering before Your throne of grace.

COMPANION

1st READING
Peter and John refuse to obey the command to stop proclaiming the Gospel. Should they have obeyed the commands of their elders? No! This is not disobedience in the true sense of the word as the “law or command” they are breaking is not a legitimate one – it has no compelling or binding force. As such, the command has no moral authority behind it. Now, this does not mean that we should set about determining if or when laws have binding authority. Generally speaking, laws of the land and our Church are binding. However, there can be cases when they are not. Such cases are rare, but they do exist and today’s reading demonstrates one such case.

Acts 4:13-21
13 Observing the boldness of Peter and John and perceiving them to be uneducated, ordinary men, the leaders, elders and scribes were amazed, and they recognized them as the companions of Jesus. 14 Then when they saw the man who had been cured standing there with them, they could say nothing in reply. 15 So they ordered them to leave the Sanhedrin, and conferred with one another, saying, 16 “What are we to do with these men? Everyone living in Jerusalem knows that a remarkable sign was done through them, and we cannot deny it. 17 But so that it may not be spread any further among the people, let us give them a stern warning never again to speak to anyone in this name.” 18 So they called them back and ordered them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. 19 Peter and John, however, said to them in reply, “Whether it is right in the sight of God for us to obey you rather than God, you be the judges. 20 It is impossible for us not to speak about what we have seen and heard.” 21 After threatening them further, they released them, finding no way to punish them, on account of the people who were all praising God for what had happened.

P S A L M in one year

Psalms 118:1, 14-15, 16-18, 19-21
R: I will give thanks to you, for you have answered me.
1 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his mercy endures forever. 14 My strength and my courage is the LORD, and he has been my savior. 15 The joyful shout of victory in the tents of the just. (R) 16 “The right hand of the LORD is exalted; the right hand of the LORD has struck with power.” 17 I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the LORD. 18 Though the LORD has indeed chastised me, yet he has not delivered me to death. (R) 19 Open to me the gates of justice; I will enter them and give thanks to the LORD. 20 This gate is the LORD’s; the just shall enter it. 21 I will give thanks to you, for you have answered me and have been my savior. (R) Jesus said to him, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

G O S P E L

All the synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark and Luke) conclude with a commissioning to take the Gospel to the ends of the earth. Each of us receives this commission at baptism and thus we are all called to participate in the work. Everyone may well have a different role to play in this task, but together we have the means by which to accomplish it. I can think of nothing more satisfying to be able to say to Jesus on Judgment Day than, “It is accomplished. The Good News of salvation has been proclaimed to all men and women.”

ALLELUIA
R: Alleluia, alleluia
This is the day the LORD has made; let us be glad and rejoice in it.
R: Alleluia, alleluia

Mark 16:9-15
9 When Jesus had risen, early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had driven seven demons. 10 She went and told his companions who were mourning and weeping. 11 When they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe. 12 After this he appeared in another form to two of them walking along on their way to the country. 13 They returned and told the others; but they did not believe them either. 14 But later, as the eleven were at table, he appeared to them and rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of heart because they had not believed those who saw him after he had been raised. 15 He said to them, “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature.”

SABBATH

THE STORY CONTINUES

This account of Mark’s Gospel is seen as an addition to the Gospels. It summarizes the narratives of Jesus’ resurrection found in all other Gospels. The evangelist informs us of Mary, the first eyewitness of the Risen Jesus. It tells of the unbelief and lack of faith on part of the disciples. Mark briefly informs us of the two men on the way to the village of Emmaus. Finally, we are told of the brief account of the Great Commission. We are the ones to continue the story of Jesus. We have heard the response of the disciples. What is our response?
What is our experience of the Risen Lord? The Octave of Easter, celebrated in the Church these days, gives us an opportunity to meet the Risen Lord. We, too, can relate with the various characters of the resurrection narratives.
The Gospel is now written through our life’s experiences. We are the ones to tell the story. Mark and the other evangelists have given us their own story — now we must do the same.
Jesus has risen and has given us the command to go and spread this news. He entrusts us the mission to tell all creatures. To go to the whole world is our call — to evangelize, to make disciples of all nations. Jesus asks this from us.
We are now like Mary announcing the news, like the disciples recognizing Jesus in the breaking of the bread, or even like the Eleven still unbelieving and hardened of heart. Let us imitate the evangelists in their faith as we write the story of Jesus that continues in our own lives. Fr. Brian Steele, MGL

Reflection Question:
Have you met Jesus? Write down your experience of the Risen Christ.

Risen Lord, help me to be an evangelist by the way I live and tell the story of my life’s experiences. Amen.

St. Gerard Miles, pray for us.

HEALED IN jesus’ NAME

“It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth... that this man stands before you healed.” – Acts 4:10

My friend Mariz has been experiencing numbness and severe pain with her left leg for over a year. She has consulted with many doctors and has taken many medications and treatments. But after more than a year of consultations and treatments, the numbness and pain remained.
During the launching of The Feast in Philippine International Convention Center on May 30, 2010, as she was praying, a lady asked how she was. Sharing her condition, this lady introduced her to her daughter Meg, who was a dentist.
Meg asked Mariz to visit her at her clinic the following week. I accompanied Mariz. As Meg checked her, she shared stories of her patients with a similar condition and how they were healed from their pain, which actually originated from a disorder in the jaw.
As I listened and watched her work, I perceived her faith in the Lord and saw how He engineered circumstances for Mariz to find her healing. As of this writing, my friend is in the process of being healed — thanks to a chance encounter with God’s chosen healer.Meann Tee (meanntytee@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
Do we rely on the Lord’s help in everything we do or do we just rely on our own strength?

Lord, I can do nothing without You. But I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philipians 4:13).

COMPANION

1st READING in one year

Christianity is unique in its claims and as Christians we recognize that we have a particular responsibility as regards one aspect of this uniqueness, namely, that it is only through Jesus that there is salvation. This does not necessarily mean that only Christians will be saved, but that anyone who is saved has been saved through the grace of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection and by no other means. This truth means that we have a compelling duty to share this message with others, particularly those who have never heard the Gospel. We must always respect an individual’s right to choose what religion/faith they will follow but this respect does not mean that we should be silent about our own beliefs.

Acts 4:1-12
1 After the crippled man had been cured, while Peter and John were still speaking to the people, the priests, the captain of the temple guard, and the Sadducees confronted them, 2 disturbed that they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead. 3 They laid hands on them and put them in custody until the next day, since it was already evening. 4 But many of those who heard the word came to believe and the number of men grew to about five thousand. 5 On the next day, their leaders, elders, and scribes were assembled in Jerusalem, 6 with Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly class. 7 They brought them into their presence and questioned them, “By what power or by what name have you done this?” 8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, answered them, “Leaders of the people and elders: 9 If we are being examined today about a good deed done to a cripple, namely, by what means he was saved, 10 then all of you and all the people of Israel should know that it was in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazorean whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead; in his name this man stands before you healed. 11 He is ‘the stone rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone.’ 12 There is no salvation through anyone else, nor is there any other name under heaven given to the human race by which we are to be saved.”

Psalms 118:1-2, 4, 22-24, 25-27
R: The stone rejected by the builders has become the cornerstone.
1 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his mercy endures forever. 2 Let the house of Israel say, “His mercy endures forever.” 4 Let those who fear the LORD say, “His mercy endures forever.” (R) 22 The stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. 23 By the LORD has this been done; it is wonderful in our eyes. 24 This is the day the LORD has made; let us be glad and rejoice in it. (R) 25 O LORD, grant salvation! O LORD, grant prosperity! 26 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD; we bless you from the house of the LORD. 27 The LORD is God, and he has given us light. (R)

The reality of Jesus’ resurrection and the nature of His resurrected being is difficult to speak of with much authority other than to say that it is real! The effectiveness of our arguments to this effect will largely rest on how convincing the witness of our lives will be as regards all the claims we make of our faith. Do our actions support our words or not? Jesus reminds us earlier in John’s Gospel that people will know we are followers of Christ through the love we manifest to others in our interpersonal relationships.

ALLELUIA
R: Alleluia, alleluia
This is the day the LORD has made; let us be glad and rejoice in it.
R: Alleluia, alleluia

John 21:1-14
1 Jesus revealed himself again to his disciples at the Sea of Tiberias. He revealed himself in this way. 2 Together were Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus, Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, Zebedee’s sons, and two others of his disciples. 3 Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We also will come with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. 4 When it was already dawn, Jesus was standing on the shore; but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. 5 Jesus said to them, “Children, have you caught anything to eat?” They answered him, “No.” 6 So he said to them, “Cast the net over the right side of the boat and you will find something.” So they cast it, and were not able to pull it in because of the number of fish. 7 So the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord.” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he tucked in his garment, for he was lightly clad, and jumped into the sea. 8 The other disciples came in the boat, for they were not far from shore, only about a hundred yards, dragging the net with the fish. 9 When they climbed out on shore, they saw a charcoal fire with fish on it and bread. 10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you just caught.” 11 So Simon Peter went over and dragged the net ashore full of one hundred fifty-three large fish. Even though there were so many, the net was not torn. 12 Jesus said to them, “Come, have breakfast.” And none of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” because they realized it was the Lord. 13 Jesuscame over and took the bread and gave it to them, and in like manner the fish. 14 This was now the third time Jesus was revealed to his disciples after being raised from the dead.

GONE FISHING!

When it all seems too much, go fishing! That is what Peter did. It was all too much for him. He heard many stories of the Risen Lord — earthquakes and angels, and then reports of apparitions. Sometimes you just have to get away from it all. Fishing is fun. I remember many times going fishing. It was always a very relaxing, carefree and an energizing experience. I always felt sorry for the fish.
Peter resumes his familiar job. The familiar air, smell, the usual actions of boating and fishing. Moreover, it is while doing this activity that something unfamiliar happens. Poor Peter, it has been a hopeless night. Maybe he should go back to his day job, if he has one. You can imagine these men exhausted, tired, hungry and heavy  in heart. They spend the whole night with no luck — they caught nothing.
The next morning Jesus, unbeknown to them, has prepared a hearty breakfast for the boys. They tell me this is the first Christian men’s breakfast. No sooner had they been asked to cast their net by the stranger on the shore that a haul of fish is caught. Why was not Jesus there the night before? The disciple whom Jesus loves immediately recognizes. Impetuous Peter still finds it hard to come to grips with the stranger being the one and only Risen Lord.
Everything is different when Jesus is here. Fishing becomes easy. Jesus is always there, anticipating our every need. He prepares our hearts and minds with grace. He provides for all our needs. He knows the extent of our weakness. He is always calling us to put out our nets into the deep, place our trust in His goodness. Sometimes we go it alone and catch nothing. Jesus makes the difference. He speaks the Word, we listen and, out of obedience, we act and then we see the fruits. Notice it wasn’t until Jesus spoke the Word that the catch of fish became so many. Fr. Brian Steele, MGL

Reflection Question:
Do you listen to the voice of Jesus? Or do you go it alone?

Lord, You know all my ways. Help me be obedient to Your Word and I will do Your will. Amen.

St. Dichu, pray for us.
