LIKE A MAGIC SKETCHPAD

As your hearts have been disposed to stray from God, turn now ten times the more to seek him… – Baruch 4:28

I’m a legendary artist. (Ahem.) I’ve produced legendary artwork. So legendary, in fact, that no one remembers them. Michelangelo used paint. Leonardo da Vinci used charcoal. Me? I use my sons’ magic sketchpad.
I love this toy. My boys and I would sit on the couch and doodle for hours. Together, we’ve drawn thousands of sketches. Here’s why I love this toy. When I make a mistake, I don’t get angry. I don’t curse myself. I don’t condemn myself. I simply pull the eraser button and draw again. Which is what we’re supposed to do in life.
I’ve met some people who think that just because they’ve made mistakes, God won’t bless them anymore. Hey, we’ve all made mistakes. Perhaps you gave yourself to addictions. Perhaps you married the wrong person. Perhaps you made poor financial decisions.
Friend, your future is brighter than your past. How do I know? Because God’s plan is bigger than your mistakes. He has a giant magic sketchpad. All He has to do is pull the eraser button and draw new plans again!  Bo Sanchez (bosanchez@kerygmafamily.com)

REFLECTION:
Feeling hopeless because you made big mistakes in your life? God has better plans for you. Seek Him again.

Lord, strengthen my hope in You.

God the Father here reveals His maternal love for us, His children, as He says that He will comfort us as a mother comforts her son. St. Therese had great confidence in the love of the Heavenly Father and imagined herself as a little child reaching out her little arms to be caught by Him. Let us follow St. Therese’s example and throw ourselves every day into the caring and merciful arms of our loving God.

Baruch 4:5-12, 27-29
5 Fear not, my people! Remember, Israel, 6 you were sold to the nations not for your destruction; it was because you angered God that you were handed over to your foes. 7 For you provoked your Maker with sacrifices to demons, to no-gods; 8 you forsook the Eternal God who nourished you, and you grieved Jerusalem who fostered you. 9 She indeed saw coming upon you the anger of God; and she said: “Hear, you neighbors of Zion! God has brought great mourning upon me, 10 for I have seen the captivity that the Eternal God has brought upon my sons and daughters. 11 With joy I fostered them; but with mourning and lament I let them go. 12 Let no one gloat over me, a widow, bereft of many: For the sins of my children I am left desolate, because they turned from the law of God. 27 Fear not, my children; call out to God! He who brought this upon you will remember you. 28 As your hearts have been disposed to stray from God, turn now ten times the more to seek him; 29 for he who has brought disaster upon you will, in saving you, bring you back enduring joy.”

P S A L M

Psalms 69:33-35, 36-37
R: The Lord listens to the poor.
32 [33] “See, you lowly ones, and be glad; you who seek God, may your hearts revive! 33 [34] For the LORD hears the poor, and his own who are in bonds he spurns not. 34 [35] Let the heavens and the earth praise him, the seas and whatever moves in them!” (R) 35 [36] For God will save Zion and rebuild the cities of Judah. They shall dwell in the land and own it, 36 [37] and the descendants of his servants shall inherit it, and those who love his name shall inhabit it. (R)

G O S P E L

St. Therese had tried to imitate the penances of the great saints and found it all too much for her fragile constitution. Instead of becoming greater, she decided to become little like a small infant and to place all her confidence in the overflowing mercy and love of God. She tries to follow the teaching of Jesus who told His disciples that they needed to become like a little child if they want to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

ALLELUIA
R: Alleluia, alleluia
Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, you have revealed to little ones the mysteries of the Kingdom.
R: Alleluia, alleluia

Luke 10:17-24
17 The seventy-two disciples returned rejoicing, and said to Jesus, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us because of your name.” 18 Jesus said, “I have observed Satan fall like lightning from the sky. 19 Behold, I have given you the power ‘to tread upon serpents’ and scorpions and upon the full force of the enemy and nothing will harm you. 20 Nevertheless, do not rejoice because the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice because your names are written in heaven.” 21 At that very moment he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I give you praise, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the childlike. Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will. 22 All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him.” 23 Turning to the disciples in private he said, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. 24 For I say to you, many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it.”

my reflections
think: Let us follow St. Therese’s example and throw ourselves every day into the caring and merciful arms of our loving God.

Knowing God

As a teacher of Holy Scriptures for many years, I often witness students who struggle with the idea of God. They ask, “Who is God? How can we know God? Is God cruel and vengeful, a God of wars, as some Old Testament passages seemingly portray Him?”
Human history is not all about wars and conquests or about politics and treaties. Beneath this surface, we can detect that human history is an endless search for a supernatural Being — a Being we call God. From the beginning of the human race, people of so-called primitive tribes, as well as those of highly developed ancient civilizations, have tried to reach beyond the physical world with its imperfections, struggles and sufferings, and the inevitable experience of death. Why? Because they sensed that there must be something better than this. This world must have its origin from powerful beings. Who and where are they? How can one reach and experience them?
Often, people projected their ideas, even their weaknesses, on the divinity and from the way people imagined their gods, we learn something about these people. The gods of the Greeks reflected the promiscuous, war-loving character of the Greeks. Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto must have shocked viewers by the blood-thirsty Aztec gods who only reflect how bloodthirsty these people were.
Do we really know God? Even the greatest theologians and saints admit that we do not have anything close to an adequate idea of God. “No one knows the Father,” Jesus exclaims in today’s Gospel passage, seemingly agreeing with all great religious thinkers. But then He adds, “…except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him.”
In other words, Jesus is the answer to the question. Through Him we can know God. The more we know Jesus through prayer and reading about Him in the Bible and spiritual books, the more we know about God, who is a loving GodFr. Rudy Horst, SVD

Reflection Question:
Who is God for me? Do I know God as the loving God whom Jesus revealed to us?

Lord, thank You for revealing the Father to us. With the help of the Holy Spirit, help me to know the Father better by knowing You more intimately.

St. Ralph Crockett, pray for us.

“Whoever listens to you listens to me. Whoever rejects you rejects me. And whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me.” – Luke 10:16

When I was in college, I had an on-the-job training for a TV program that was a course requirement. One time, the executive producer asked me to call the young actors who were resting in their van. I did as I was told. I told them the boss was calling them and they said OK. After calling them two more times, they still didn’t come.
On the third time, the boss personally went to the vehicle and, in a way, scolded the young celebrities. She told them that even if I was just a student and wasn’t part of their staff, she sent me and I was representing her. If they didn’t follow me, it meant they were disrespecting her who had sent me.
Today’s Gospel speaks about Jesus sending out 70 men to represent Him. They were sent to heal and proclaim that the kingdom of God was at hand. It didn’t matter if they were inexperienced, unimportant or uninfluential. They carried His authority. And whoever rejected them meant they were rejecting Jesus as well.
The message and instructions they conveyed were from the Boss. Carlo Lorenzo (carloflorenzo@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
Do I ignore or subtly reject people who share the  Good News or who witness to God’s presence in their lives simply because they don’t seem credible enough? Do I reject the message because I feel the sender doesn’t have enough authority or influence over me?

Holy Spirit, I ask You to help me understand and listen to Your messages regardless of who the messenger is.

The people of God have been taken into captivity in Babylon because of their unfaithfulness to the covenant they made with God. In exile they reflect back on the reasons for their captivity and realize that they had broken the law of God and hence had suffered the consequences of their infidelities. God’s desire is to bless His people but if they disobey Him and serve other gods, then they will not receive the blessing but suffer a curse instead.

Baruch 1:15-22
15 During the Babylonian captivity, the exiles prayed: “Justice is with the LORD, our God; and we today are flushed with shame, we men of Judah and citizens of Jerusalem, 16 that we, with our kings and rulers and priests and prophets, and with our ancestors, 17 have sinned in the LORD’s sight 18 and disobeyed him. We have neither heeded the voice of the LORD, our God, nor followed the precepts which the LORD set before us. 19 From the time the LORD led our ancestors out of the land of Egypt until the present day, we have been disobedient to the LORD, our God, and only too ready to disregard his voice. 20 And the evils and the curse which the LORD enjoined upon Moses, his servant, at the time he led our ancestors forth from the land of Egypt to give us the land flowing with milk and honey, cling to us even today. 21 For we did not heed the voice of the LORD,  our God, in all the words of the prophets whom he sent us, 22 but each one of us went off after the devices of our own wicked hearts, served other gods, and did evil in the sight of the LORD, our God.

P S A L M

Psalms 79:1-2, 3-5, 8, 9
R: For the glory of your name, O Lord, deliver us.
1 O God, the nations have come into your inheritance; they have defiled your holy temple, they have laid Jerusalem in ruins. 2 They have given the corpses of your servants as food to the birds of heaven, the flesh of your faithful ones to the beasts of the earth. (R) 3 They have poured out their blood like water round about Jerusalem, and there is no one to bury them. 4 We have become the reproach of our neighbors, the scorn and derision of those around us. 5 O LORD, how long? Will you be angry forever? Will your jealousy burn like fire? (R) 8 Remember not against us the iniquities of the past; may your compassion quickly come to us, for we are brought very low. (R) 9 Help us, O God our savior, because of the glory of your name; deliver us and pardon our sins for your name’s sake. (R)

G O S P E L

Here, Jesus speaks out against the cities of Chorazin and Bethsaida where He had performed many miracles yet they had not believed His message. Jesus makes it clear that to whom much is given, much will be required. As these two towns received so many blessings from God, they would be judged more severely than Tyre and Sidon. This is a sobering message that reminds us not to take for granted the blessings of God because with each comes a responsibility to respond.

ALLELUIA
R: Alleluia, alleluia
If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
R: Alleluia, alleluia

Luke 10:13-16
13 Jesus said to them, “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty deeds done in your midst had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would long ago have repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. 14 But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you. 15 And as for you, Capernaum, ‘Will you be exalted to heaven? You will go down to the netherworld.’” 16 Whoever listens to you listens to me. Whoever rejects you rejects me. And whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me.”

WITH PRIVILEGE COMES RESPONSIBILITY

From these words of Jesus, we can easily deduce that He has performed great wonders in Chorazin and Bethsaida. The people of Tyre and Sidon were known to be hard of heart, but Jesus knew that if these same miracles were performed in these towns they would have easily repented. So even if Scripture is silent about these great miracles, we can take it to mean that Jesus’ works there were so spectacular that He was offended by their lack of positive response to Him.
“How terrible it will be for you, Chorazin! How terrible for you too, Bethsaida!” These are strong words — words of a God who has given much, who has offered much, but whose offer was not received and reciprocated.
We, Christians, are lucky and blessed. While other religions are still employing different strategies and means to search for what is true and perfect, we already know what we need to do in order to achieve it. We know, too, what awaits us at the end of our lives. Jesus has already given us God’s words to this effect. Through the Spirit, we are able to continue discerning God’s Word spoken to us through our tradition and through our life situations.
Today’s Gospel deals with how we are to handle the great responsibility of receiving this much privilege from Him. We are so privileged because we already know the truth from the very mouth of the Son of God at that.
With great privilege comes great responsibility. Just as Jesus expected much from the people of Chorazin and Bethsaida for His many gifts to them, so will He expect much from us. We better take stock and see how much we have been graced with and move ourselves to deliver accordingly.  Fr. Sandy V. Enhaynes

Reflection Question:
Take stock of the many gifts and privileges God has given you. What are you doing with them?

Lord, thank You for the gifts You have given us, Your Church. Thank You for the talents You have bestowed on me. Grant me a willing spirit to use them all for Your glory and for the building of Your Kingdom here on earth.

St. Laurus, pray for us.

Feast of Sts. Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, Archangels

angelic protection

And there was war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon… – Revelation 12:7

I was badly shaken as our son, Peevee, together with the rest of the family, rushed me to the hospital. I felt so helpless and totally out of control as I plummeted down the stairway on a free fall, slamming against the long flight of steps. As in all accidents, it just happened so fast without warning. I fell headlong and crashed into the cemented landing below.
It was my first time to be in an ER and was immediately brought to the trauma room. I must have been in a state of shock because I didn’t feel any pain until I felt the sting of the anti-tetanus shots and the hydrogen peroxide that was generously poured on the deep wounds on my left arm that was bleeding and badly swollen.
My story could have had a different and tragic ending. But the X-ray and other tests yielded negative results. I came out of the fall unscathed except for the scar that now serves as a reminder of the Lord’s goodness.
I am deeply grateful to Him for giving me a guardian angel who shielded and protected me on that day of the accident.  Mari Sison-Garcia (mari_sison_garcia@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
“Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.” (Hebrews 13:2)

Lord, I thank You for assigning an angel to watch over me 24/7.

COMPANION

1st READING

In this passage from the Book of Revelation, we see a vision of John the Beloved in which the Archangel Michael is at war with Satan and casts him and his angels out of heaven. Having been thrown down to earth, Satan wages war against the saints and does this by accusing them before God for all their sins. While the Holy Spirit convicts us of our sins and seeks to lead us to repentance, Satan only wants to discourage us and make us feel unworthy so that we do not want to come to God our Father and be forgiven.

Revelation 12:7-12 (or Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14)
7 War broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels battled against the dragon. The dragon and its angels fought back, 8 but they did not prevail and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. 9 The huge dragon, the ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, who deceived the whole world, was thrown down to earth, and its angels were thrown down with it. 10 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: “Now have salvation and power come, and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Anointed. For the accuser of our brothers is cast out, who accuses them before our God day and night. 11 They conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; love for life did not deter them from death. 12 Therefore, rejoice, you heavens, and you who dwell in them.”

Psalms 138:1-2, 2-3, 4-5
R: In the sight of the angels I will sing your praises, Lord.
1 I will give thanks to you, O LORD, with all my heart, for you have heard the words of my mouth; in the presence of the angels I will sing your praise; 2 I will worship at your holy temple and give thanks to your name. (R) Because of your kindness and your truth; for you have made great above all things your name and your promise. (R) 3 When I called, you answered me; you built up strength within me. (R) 4 All the kings of the earth shall give thanks to you, O LORD, when they hear the words of your mouth; 5 and they shall sing of the ways of the LORD: “Great is the glory of the LORD.” (R)

G O S P E L

Nathanael is convinced that Jesus is the Messiah and anointed one of God because Jesus says that He saw him under the fig tree. Yet Jesus informs him that he will see far greater things than that. Jesus then makes an allusion to the story of Jacob who slept and saw a ladder going up to heaven and angels ascending and descending on it. He called the place the House of God. Jesus tells Nathanael that He is the new house or dwelling of God and will in fact replace the Temple in Jerusalem.

ALLELUIA
R: Alleluia, alleluia
Bless the Lord, all you angels, you ministers, who do His will.
R: Alleluia, alleluia

John 1:47-51
47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Here is a true child of Israel. There is no duplicity in him.” 48 Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree.” 49 Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel.” 50 Jesus answered and said to him, “Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this.” 51 And he said to him, “Amen, amen, I say to you, you will see the sky opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

my reflections
t h in k : While the Holy Spirit convicts us of our sins and seeks to lead us to repentance, Satan only wants to discourage us and make us feel unworthy so that we do not want to come to God our Father and be forgiven.

SABBATH

ANGELS ARE AROUND

Today we celebrate the feast of the Archangels; Michael (meaning “Who is like God”), Raphael (meaning “The Medicine of God”), and Gabriel (meaning “The Power of God”). Michael is known as our defender against Satan and all his evil angels. Raphael was the archangel who took care of Tobias in his journey and therefore our caregiver. And Gabriel was the one who announced to Mary that she was to be the Mother of the Son of God and therefore our wisdom and source of courage.
Early catechism tells us that each of us had been assigned by God with Guardian Angels. They were meant to make us aware and feel that God is with us and that He guides us. But we need to recognize and be open to god’s unique presence. Many of us at a certain point in our life dismiss the presence of these spirits.
Stories had already been told about some women who were in close danger of being harassed and harmed and suddenly found the courage, the action and the words needed to ward off their attackers. All because they sought the assistance of God through His angels. I, myself, felt God’s wisdom through Archangel Gabriel when I was seeking my vocation. Inspired by Mary’s experience with Gabriel, I sought the Lord and He responded to me through Archangel Gabriel. The call of God became clearer and definite for me.
It is a matter of faith. God’s ways are really mysterious and unpredictable. Others may live their faith without recognizing the presence of angels. But many, like me, who are aware of their presence and power, benefit from the angels. Hail to Michael, Gabriel and Raphael! Fr. Benny Tuazon

Reflection Question:
Do you communicate with your angesls? Do you take advantage of the help and protection they provide?

Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom His love commits me here. Even this day be at my side to light and guide, to rule and guard. Amen.

St. Garcia, pray for us.
