WAIT FOR THE CATCH

“Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch.” – Luke 5:4

For 30 years, the Light of Jesus Family was trying to catch more fish. Patiently. Faithfully. Obediently. But there was a time when no matter what we did, we weren’t growing in number.
Sometimes, I wondered if God was just calling us to do media work, as this was being blessed. But Light of Jesus itself was stagnating. Don’t get me wrong. Our caring groups were strong. And our chapter meetings were tight. But why weren’t we growing in number by leaps and bounds?
And then a breakthrough happened. It was like we turned a corner and KABOOM! We knew who we were and what we were called to do. With this new direction, we dared to put out into the deep.
We opened more satellite Feasts in different places. And people flocked and grew in number.
It was like an explosion.
The message: Don’t give up when nothing seems to be happening. Just continue lowering your nets even in places where a catch doesn’t seem likely. And then wait. God will do the rest. Bo Sanchez (bosanchez@kerygmafamily.com)

REFLECTION:
Are you reaping any harvest for your efforts? Are you fulfilling your dreams? If not, continue planting. Harvest will come.

Lead me, Lord, to the path of abundance and fruitfulness in my life.

St. Paul prays a wonderful prayer for the Christians at Collose. He asks God to fill them with a knowledge of His will by giving them all spiritual insights and wisdom. This is something that we can all pray for as well so that each day we can walk in God’s will and complete the work that He has for us. This way, our lives will bear abundant fruit for His glory.

Colossians 1:9-14
9 Brothers and sisters: From the day we heard about you, we do not cease praying for you and asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding 10 to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, so as to be fully pleasing, in every good work bearing fruit and growing in the knowledge of God, 11 strengthened with every power, in accord with his glorious might, for all endurance and patience, with joy 12 giving thanks to the Father, who has made you fit to share in the inheritance of the holy ones in light. 13 He delivered us from the power of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Psalms 98:2-3, 3-4, 5-6
R: The Lord has made known his salvation.
2 The LORD has made his salvation known: in the sight of the nations he has revealed his justice. 3 He has remembered his kindness and his faithfulness toward the house of Israel. (R) All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation by our God. 4 Sing joyfully to the LORD, all you lands; break into song; sing praise. (R) 5 Sing praise to the LORD with the harp, with the harp and melodious song. 6 With trumpets and the sound of the horn sing joyfully before the King, the LORD. (R)

G O S P E L

Peter had been fishing all night and he had caught nothing. After Jesus had finished teaching the crowds, He tells Peter to cast out his net for a catch of fish. Peter is initially reluctant as he had worked all night doing just that and had caught nothing. But he overcomes his natural reluctance and obeys the Lord. Immediately he and his companions catch a huge quantity of fish so much so that their nets are breaking. This story demonstrates the importance of listening to Jesus and following Him if we want our ministries to be fruitful.

ALLELUIA
R: Alleluia, alleluia
Come after me, says the Lord, and I will make you fishers of men.
R: Alleluia, alleluia
Luke 5:1-11
1 While the crowd was pressing in on Jesus and listening to the word of God, he was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret. 2 He saw two boats there alongside the lake; the fishermen had disembarked and were washing their nets. 3 Getting into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, he asked him to put out a short distance from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. 4 After he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch.” 5 Simon said in reply, “Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing, but at your command I will lower the nets.” 6 When they had done this, they caught a great number of fish and their nets were tearing. 7 They signalled to their partners in the other boat to come to help them. They came and filled both boats so that they were in danger of sinking. 8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at the knees of Jesus and said, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.” 9 For astonishment at the catch of fish they had made seized him and all those with him, 10 and likewise James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners of Simon. Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” 11 When they brought their boats to the shore, they left everything and followed him.

SABBATH

Jesus Says, Simon Follows!

This may be the story of the call of Peter, but in essence, it is everyone’s call to be a Christian. The circumstances of the call reveals to us who we really are and who Jesus really is.
Peter had just come back from an all-night fishing job when Jesus approached him and requested him to put his boat ashore so He could teach. Peter, by then, must already have heard Jesus’ talks. He must have been moved by His teachings, such that when Jesus commanded him to go out again and catch fish, He wanted to follow Him except that he knew there was nothing more to catch. Remember, Peter was a veteran fisherman. He had been at the job for a long time. He knew his craft well. He knew the sea, the weather, the fish, etc. Later, however, he would realize that the Lord knew better. He was not able to restrain himself from questioning the Lord. But because of what he heard from the Lord’s teaching, he followed Jesus’ command. Proven wrong, Peter saw Jesus in a deeper way. Maybe a beatific vision that prompted him to kneel before Jesus and admit to his unworthiness.
Crucial to Peter’s conversion was listening first to the Lord. It should be the same with us.  Listening here doesn’t just mean hearing the spoken word but also understanding it. The Lord had spoken from the heart, therefore, we must listen from the heart.
Peter must have had some questions or objections, but having felt and heard the Lord’s presence, his faith rather than experience prevailed. The Lord’s will over his will. The Lord’s authority more than his. In short, Peter simply put everything in Jesus’ hands.
The miracle of the catch not only astonished Peter but also those around him who had also heard the Lord. It was enough for them to make a decision to leave everything and follow Jesus. It is symbolic of the fact that when we find the Lord, everything becomes dispensable. Having found the Lord completes us. We will never be wanting of anything or anyone. The Lord alone is enough.  Fr. Benny Tuazon

Reflection Question:
Have you ever felt God calling you to follow Him or to do something for Him? How did you respond?

Lord, open my ears, my mind and my heart to listen to Your call. Make my feet and hands ever ready to do what You want me to do. Amen.

St. Fiacre, pray for us.

UNEXPECTED HEALING

The crowds went looking for him (Jesus), and when they came to him, they tried to prevent him from leaving them. But he said to them, “To the other towns also I must proclaim the good news...” – Luke 4:42-43

A father who attended the 2009 Kerygma Conference prayed for his daughter to be healed from a certain condition. Weeks later, he noticed some changes, but not with his daughter. The father who wore glasses realized that his vision became clearer as days passed.
He didn’t understand why he was being healed. Nevertheless, He submits to the will of the Lord and is thankful.
In today’s Gospel, crowds tried to prevent Jesus from leaving so he could continue healing the people in that place. Jesus said “no” and that was probably difficult for many to understand. He had to move on and preach the Good News elsewhere.
We can always pray for healing, for ourselves and for others. Whom He decides to heal, we don’t know. But one thing is sure: Jesus loves us so much that He is concerned over our eternal salvation. If He doesn’t heal our body, but He heals our soul then that’s the greater blessing. Our time here on earth is but a speck compared to where our souls go after.  Carlo Lorenzo (carloflorenzo@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
“My child, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them escape from your sight; keep them within your heart. For they are life to those who find them, and healing to all their flesh.” (Proverbs 4:20-22)

Divine Healer, we pray for the sick, breathe Your love into their bodies, but more importantly, may we all embrace You into our lives and follow the path to heaven.

1st READING
St. Paul begins his letter by giving thanks to God for His grace at work in the community to whom he writes. He mentions the three theological virtues of faith, hope and love that are manifest in the lives of the Christians at Colosse. These three virtues support each other and unite us most closely with God. When our faith grows dim, our hope dies and love lessens. By deepening our love for the Word of God, our faith will grow stronger.

Colossians 1:1-8
1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, 2 to the holy ones and faithful brothers and sisters in Christ in Colossae: grace to you and peace from God our Father. 3 We always give thanks to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, 4 for we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and the love that you have for all the holy ones 5 because of the hope reserved for you in heaven. Of this you have already heard through the word of truth, the gospel, 6 that has come to you. Just as in the whole world it is bearing fruit and growing, so also among you, from the day you heard it and came to know the grace of God in truth, 7 as you learned it from Epaphras our beloved fellow slave, who is a trustworthy minister of Christ on your behalf 8 and who also told us of your love in the Spirit.

P S A L M

Psalms 52:10, 11
R: I trust in the mercy of God forever.
8 [10] I, like a green olive tree in the house of God, trust in the mercy of God forever and ever. (R) 9 [11] I will thank you always for what you have done, and proclaim the goodness of your name before your faithful ones. (R)

G O S P E L

We can see from this Gospel story that Simon Peter was not poor. He had his own business, a fishing boat and a home where Jesus and His disciples stayed when in Capernaum. Yet he put all these at the service of God’s Kingdom. What fruit did his decision bring? Peter’s mother-in-law, who had severe fever (probably malaria), is healed by Jesus and so are a multitude of people in the town. Let us also be generous in our response to God’s call as St. Peter was.

ALLELUIA
R: Alleluia, alleluia
The Lord sent me to bring glad tidings to the poor and to proclaim liberty to captives.
R: Alleluia, alleluia

Luke 4:38-44
38 After Jesus left the synagogue, he entered the house of Simon. Simon’s mother-in-law was afflicted with a severe fever, and they interceded with him about her. 39 He stood over her, rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up immediately and waited on them. 40 At sunset, all who had people sick with various diseases brought them to him. He laid his hands on each of them and cured them. 41 And demons also came out from many, shouting, “You are the Son of God.” But he rebuked them and did not allow them to speak because they knew that he was the Christ. 42 At daybreak, Jesus left and went to a deserted place. The crowds went looking for him, and when they came to him, they tried to prevent him from leaving them. 43 But he said to them, “To the other towns also I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God, because for this purpose I have been sent.” 44 And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.

WHAT IS MY RESPONSIBILITY?

Mother Teresa of Calcutta teaches us that we should ask God every day what He wants us to do for Him. If we don’t, how can we honestly say that we did not know that such and such was what He wanted us to do? It may be literally true but morally speaking, we are at fault because we have not, in good faith, attempted to discover His will in the first place.
There are many who think that ignorance is a valid excuse but as the saying goes, “Ignorance of the law is no excuse!” We have a moral responsibility to know the law particularly when we are about to make a choice. It is similar to our responsibility to be busy with God’s will for our lives. God does not send text messages and emails to reveal His will for our lives. We have to seek it out. There are many ways to do this, including daily prayer, which is an essential element.
If we fail to take this call seriously, we will be wondering until Judgment Day as to what God wanted us to do. Unfortunately, by then, we will be required to give an account of our lives and why we have consistently failed to even seek God’s will, let alone accomplish it. Therefore we should do all that we can now to ensure that we discover God’s will so that we could follow it as best as we can.
We cannot say that we do not have our destiny in our hands. It is up to us to make the right choices now so that we can walk the path that God wants us to take. Let us be faithful in praying so we can give ourselves the best opportunity to discover God’s will and the chance to follow it. Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
Do I seriously try to discover God’s will in my life? What am I doing to seek it?

Jesus, I know Your will for my life is perfect and the only way to true fulfillment. Help me to discover it and to be faithful in following it.

St. Caesidius, pray for us.

When I was in college, I was walking along a street in Manila and saw an old Caucasian man talking to a very young girl and her teenage brother. It appeared like the old man and the teenager were haggling. I wasn’t sure but something in my gut felt that they were bargaining over the price of the child. I felt bad I couldn’t do anything about it.
Looking back today, I know I should have spoken up against evil that day. I realize now that there was nothing to be shy or afraid about standing up against injustice, against people who abuse and disrespect human dignity. Someone said that for evil to triumph in this world, all you need is for good men to do nothing. I think evil endures when good men say nothing, when we keep quiet and tolerate it.
As children of the light, we have the duty to speak up when we see evil happening in our midst. Jesus gives us the same power and authority He exercises in today’s Gospel to stand up against the evil in this day through the sword of the Holy Spirit which is in our hands. Scripture gives us the power, wisdom and courage to stop darkness in its tracks. Marjorie Duterte (marjorie.travels@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
“When the Holy Spirit comes upon you, you will be filled with power, and you will be witnesses for me…” (Acts 1:8)

Father, fill me with Your Holy Spirit that I may have the strength and courage to confront evil and fight it for others’ sake. Amen.

1st READING
Christ’s return will be sudden and unexpected. As Christians, we should be alert and busy doing His work so that when He does come, we will not be ashamed to face Him. Paul tells us to put on the breastplate of faith and love. This will protect our hearts and ensure we are ready when Christ returns.

1 Thessalonians 5:1-6, 9-11
1 Concerning times and seasons, brothers and sisters, you have no need for anything to be written to you. 2 For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief at night. 3 When people are saying, “Peace and security,” then sudden disaster comes upon them, like labor pains upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. 4 But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness, for that day to overtake you like a thief. 5 For all of you are children of the light and children of the day. We are not of the night or of darkness. 6 Therefore, let us not sleep as the rest do, but let us stay alert and sober. 9 For God did not destine us for wrath, but to gain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep we may live together with him. 11 Therefore, encourage one another and build one another up, as indeed you do.

Psalms 27:1, 4, 13-14
R: I believe that I shall see the good things of the Lord in the land of the living.
1 The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom should I fear? The LORD is my life’s refuge; of whom should I be afraid? (R) 4 One thing I ask of the LORD; this I seek, to dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, that I may gaze on the loveliness of the LORD and contemplate his temple. (R) 13 I believe that I shall see the bounty of the LORD in the land of the living. 14 Wait for the LORD with courage; be stouthearted, and wait for the LORD. (R)

G O S P E L

When the scribes and Pharisees taught the people, they often quoted famous scholars and rabbis to support what they were saying and to impress their audience. Jesus, in contrast, spoke with great simplicity and power, supporting what He taught with miracles and signs. He did not quote other authorities as He was Himself God, and so He said, “But I say unto you.” He even placed His teaching above that of Moses, the greatest of all the Jewish prophets.

ALLELUIA
R: Alleluia, alleluia
A great prophet has arisen in our midst and God has visited his people.
R: Alleluia, alleluia

Luke 4:31-37
31 Jesus then went down to Capernaum, a town of Galilee. He taught them on the sabbath, 32 and they were astonished at his teaching because he spoke with authority. 33 In the synagogue there was a man with the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out in a loud voice, 34 “Ha! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are — the Holy One of God!” 35 Jesus rebuked him and said, “Be quiet! Come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down in front of them and came out of him without doing him any harm. 36 They were all amazed and said to one another, “What is there about his word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.”  37 And news of him spread everywhere in the surrounding region.

THE MIRACLES OF JESUS

The miracles of Jesus are not just God showing off His power. They are signs of the in-breaking of the Kingdom of God into our world. With the birth of Jesus, we have something of heaven, something of the divine coming into the world. When the divine encounters the human, there is often some sort of fireworks, so to speak. This is what we witness when God works miracles. It is not just the authority of Jesus that the people marvel at; it is far more than this.
Furthermore, the miracles of Jesus are signs that God wants to engage with us in our lives. Yes, they are rather extraordinary signs but we have not left God with much of a choice. In over 2,000 years of working with the Jewish people, their hardness of heart and stubbornness of spirit barely changed. God has decided that He needs to intervene in a more spectacular way in order to convince us of His love and inspire faith within our hearts.
As we read about the miracles of Jesus in the Scriptures, let us remember they are meant to inspire awe and wonder to build our faith in God. It is good to ask the Holy Spirit to increase our faith as we reflect on the Word of God. The Word of God is powerful and we need to do all we can to harness its power. We do not have the luxury of having Jesus physically present to work His miracles today as the Apostles did, but we do have the blessing of the Word of God to bring life to the miracles of Jesus. Let us seek to activate our faith and allow its inherent dynamic to draw us closer to and more deeply in love with our God. Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
Do I believe in the miracles of Jesus? What role do I think they have in my faith?

Jesus, many times You exercised authority over evil and the elements to demonstrate Your divinity and encourage our faith in You. Help me to believe more in You today.

St. Loaran, pray for us.
