CONTRAVIDA

“You will be hated by all because of my name, but whoever endures to the end will be saved.“ – Matthew 10:22

“This relationship won’t work. You are too righteous for me.”
Huh? Did I hear that correctly? Did I just get penalized for living up to my Christian values? Was it wrong to influence him to be obedient to the teachings of the Church?
To be advised pointblank to turn a blind eye and remain mum to keep my man was confusing. I didn’t budge. It was disheartening to lose a special friend for such reason.
Observe how society has allowed the promotion of contraceptives, with abortion being debated upon as the right of women to choose rather than the right of the unborn child to live. Pornography has proliferated for profit disguised as art. Teenagers are into casual sex because it’s the “in” thing. Bribery has embedded itself as a norm in business transactions.
Modern times continue to test us on how steadfast we can remain in our faith. Sadly, those who have chosen to speak up in defense of His Word have become the outcasts, nerds and “contravidas” of society.
Me? I don’t mind being the contravida again. How about you?Marie Franco (rfranco@its.jnj.com)

REFLECTION:
Shakespeare said, “They do not truly love who do not show their love.” How far will I go for my love for Christ?

You, oh Lord, have been there as my protector. Grant me the wisdom and courage to stand up for You, too.

COMPANION

1st READING

Hosea struggles with Israel’s refusal to repent of idol worship. Such practices lead to unholy alliances with secular nations and ultimately to the destruction of the Kingdom and exile. It is still a few decades off but the seed of Israel’s destruction has been planted firmly through the stubbornness of their hearts in refusing to trust in God alone.

Hosea 14:2-10
2 Thus says the LORD: Return, O Israel, to the LORD, your God; you have collapsed through your guilt. 3 Take with you words, and return to the LORD; Say to him, “Forgive all iniquity, and receive what is good, that we may render as offerings the bullocks from our stalls. 4 Assyria will not save us, nor shall we have horses to mount; We shall say no more, ‘Our god,’ to the work of our hands; for in you the orphan finds compassion.” 5 I will heal their defection, I will love them freely; for my wrath is turned away from them. 6 I will be like the dew for Israel: he shall blossom like the lily; He shall strike root like the Lebanon cedar, 7 and put forth his shoots. His splendor shall be like the olive tree and his fragrance like the Lebanon cedar. 8 Again they shall dwell in his shade and raise grain; They shall blossom like the vine, and his fame shall be like the wine of Lebanon. 9 Ephraim! What more has he to do with idols? I have humbled him, but I will prosper him. “I am like a verdant cypress tree” — Because of me you bear fruit! 10 Let him who is wise understand these things; let him who is
prudent know them. Straight are the paths of the LORD, in them the just walk, but sinners stumble in them.

Psalm 51:3-4, 8-9, 12-13, 14, 17
R: My mouth will declare your praise.
1 [3] Have mercy on me, O God, in your goodness; in the greatness of your compassion wipe out my offense. 2 [4] Thoroughly wash me from my guilt and of my sin cleanse me. (R) 6 [8] Behold, you are pleased with sincerity of heart, and in my inmost being you teach me wisdom. 7 [9] Cleanse me of sin with hyssop, that I may be purified; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. (R) 10 [12] A clean heart create for me, O God, and a steadfast spirit renew within me. 11 [13] Cast me not out from your presence, and your Holy Spirit take not from me. (R) 12 [14] Give me back the joy of your salvation, and a willing spirit sustain in me. 15 [17] O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall proclaim your praise. (R)

G O S P E L

As we proclaim the Gospel we should expect persecution and difficulty. It is not going to be easy. The dismissive attitude of so many people today is the most prevalent response we will experience. We must not allow this to get us down. No matter how people respond, we must remain faithful to our calling. It is God’s problem, not ours, to bring about the actual conversion of an individual. Let us not lose heart but strain forward to the finish line as Paul always encourages us to do.

Matthew 10:16-23
16 Jesus said to his Apostles: “Behold, I am sending you like sheep in the midst of wolves; so be shrewd as serpents and simple as doves. 17 But beware of people, for they will hand you over to courts and scourge you in their synagogues, 18 and you will be led before governors and kings for my sake as a witness before them and the pagans. 19 When they hand you over, do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say. You will be given at that moment what you are to say. 20 For it will not be you who speak but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. 21 Brother will hand over brother to death, and the father his child; children will rise up against parents and have them put to death. 22 You will be hated by all because of my name, but whoever endures to the end will be saved. 23 When they persecute you in one town, flee to another. Amen, I say to you, you will not finish the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.”

my reflections
think: No matter how people respond, we must remain faithful to our calling.

SABBATH

A LAMB AMONG WOLVES

The Gospel today speaks about being a lamb among the wolves. Try to picture a single lamb in the midst of a pack of wolves. I do not think any of us will give the lamb too much of a chance of living very long. Jesus uses this as an analogy for our lives when we become His disciples. We live in a world where many do not believe or do not practice their faith.
We will always be staring temptation in the face as we follow Jesus Christ because the world and sin never give up without a fight. Satan does not like to lose any battle and it is precisely here that we can exploit one of his weaknesses — his desire to win every battle. As we begin to stand firm in our faith, Satan will throw all his forces against us to try to win us back. We have to learn to be steadfast in our faith and to pay Satan no attention at all. As he gets more and more desperate to win us back, he will get equally desperate in the methods he chooses to accomplish his goal. Ultimately this will make it easier for us, provided we keep our eyes and hearts fixed on Jesus. The crazier the methods of Satan, the easier they are to repudiate.
Jesus always chose to place His faith in the Word of God. There is no safer foundation than this. The Word of God commends itself to us as it reminds us that it is only the truth that can set us free (John 8:32). We must learn to trust in the truth and live by it. Yes, this will anger Satan, but as you have probably experienced in your life, it is when we allow anger to get the better of our minds that we are defeated in an argument. The poets and revolutionaries may exhort us to rage at the world and the powers of evil; however, we know the answer is not in raging but in entrusting our lives calmly and deliberately to the grace and mercy of God.Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
Do you see yourself like a lamb among the wolves? Do you feel as though the powers of Satan are battering you on every side? If so, pray for the grace to trust in the Lord.

Jesus, help me to stay calm and focused in the midst of the battle for my soul. Help me to keep my eyes and heart fixed on You and the truth of the Gospel. This is the only sure way to defeat the enemy.

Blessed Adrian Fortescue, pray for us.
