Mission Accomplished

“… of which I am a minister in accordance with God’s stewardship given to me to bring completion for you the word of God.” – Colossians1:25

Whenever I go on a journey, especially out of the country, I always feel that God is sending me on a mission.
When I visited Toronto, Canada, I saw my nephew again who had been working for more than 10 years in the US. He recently moved to this Canadian city because he had been estranged from his wife and was looking for a different life. His marital experience left him devastated and he had not found a job, being new in the city.
Sensing a call to evangelize, my husband and I stayed up with him one time until the wee hours of the morning talking about how God could turn his life around. He wept and we knew that God had touched his heart. We left an audio disc for him to learn more about God and his spiritual journey.
Two months later, he called me overseas to thank me. He had found a good-paying job and a new direction as he experiences God’s miracles in his life.
God’s mission is my mission.Donna España (donna@homeliving.com.ph)

REFLECTION:
A mission accomplished for God will make your joy complete.

Lord, I want to live my life fully for Your greater glory.

COMPANION

1st READING

Abraham is not willing to take any chances here. He quickly realizes that his visitors may be angels or messengers from God and so he exhorts Sarah to quickly prepare them something. Hospitality is an essential part of human living. Yes, we will always be more hospitable to those we know, but we must also remain open to the fact that many who visit us will be unknown to us but known to God. We should treat all visitors with the respect due to God as they may be angels in disguise.

Genesis 18:1-10a
1 The LORD appeared to Abraham by the terebinth of Mamre, as he sat in the entrance of his tent, while the day was growing hot. 2 Looking up, he saw three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he ran from the entrance of the tent to greet them; and bowing to the ground, 3 he said: “Sir, if I may ask you this favor, please do not go on past your servant. 4 Let some water be brought, that you may bathe your feet, and then rest yourselves under the tree. 5 Now that you have come this close to your servant, let me bring you a little food, that you may refresh yourselves; and afterward you may go on your way.” “Very well,” they replied, “do as you have said.” 6 Abraham hastened into the tent and told Sarah, “Quick, three seahs of fine flour! Knead it and make rolls.” 7 He ran to the herd, picked out a tender, choice steer, and gave it to a servant, who quickly prepared it. 8 Then he got some curds and milk, as well as the steer that had been prepared, and set these before them; and he waited on them under the tree while they ate. 9 “Where is your wife Sarah?” they asked him. “There in the tent,” he replied. 10 One of them said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah will then have a son.”

Psalm 15:2-3, 3-4, 5 (1a)
R: He who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord.
2 One who walks blamelessly and does justice; who thinks the truth in his heart 3 and slanders not with his tongue. (R) Who harms not his fellow man, nor takes up a reproach against his neighbor; 4 by whom the reprobate is despised, while he honors those who fear the LORD. (R) 5 Who lends not his money at usury and accepts no bribe against the innocent. One who does these things shall never be disturbed. (R)

2nd READING

St. Paul reminds us that our suffering is redemptive when we join it to the suffering of Christ and thus give it a similar if not same meaning as His. Suffering, when endured with grace, can be a tremendously powerful tool for evangelization. Let us not miss the opportunity to give glory to God and draw others to Him when suffering comes our way. Jesus suffered for our salvation; let us be willing to suffer for the salvation of others.

Colossians 1:24-28
24 Brothers and sisters: Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ on behalf of his body, which is the church, 25 of which I am a minister in accordance with God’s stewardship given to me to bring to completion for you the word of God, 26 the mystery hidden from ages and from generations past. But now it has been manifested to his holy ones, 27 to whom God chose to make known the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; it is Christ in you, the hope for glory. 28 It is he whom we proclaim, admonishing everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone perfect in Christ.

G O S P E L

Sitting is to being as serving is to doing. It is the former that needs priority but without us forgetting that the latter is also essential, though subservient to the former. Faith is all about “being with God” in order to be obedient to His will. Without the former, the latter will be viewed purely as an unjust imposition on  our lives. However, if we learn to live as one with God in prayer and recollection, we will discover that we desire to be obedient to His will above all things.

Luke 10:38-42
38 Jesus entered a village where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him. 39 She had a sister named Mary who sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak. 40 Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me.” 41 The Lord said to her in reply, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. 42 There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.”

my reflections
t h i n k : Let us not miss the opportunity to give glory to God and draw others to Him when suffering comes our way.

SABBATH

LIVING A TRULY BALANCED LIFE

It is important that we know the proper context when we reflect upon this story of Jesus’ encounter with Mary and Martha. Jesus is not telling us that serving a visitor in one’s home is a bad thing to do. He is simply saying that there is a time to serve and a time to just sit and reflect upon life and we need to find the right balance between the two.
I think we all know at least one person who hides behind busyness to avoid having to relate to the people in his life. This is what Jesus is addressing. We must find time to serve those around us; we must also find the time to simply be with them and to enjoy their company. This is the essence of human relationships.
We live in a world that rewards activism and industriousness to the point that we forget about our need for silence. I was reading a book the other day and it says that, generally speaking, people today lack silence and thus are unable to reflect upon the meaning of their lives. Socrates reminded us 2,500 years ago that “an unreflected life is not worth living.”
It is important for us to serve; it is just as important to have some silence and give God the opportunity to speak into our hearts and give us direction for our lives. If we fail to do this, we will come to the end of our lives and wonder what it was all for — what we have achieved; what difference our lives have made. Thus, the presence or absence of reflection is ultimately a matter of life and death. If you want to give meaning to your life, be willing to spend portions of your time to reflection. Monks in contemplative monasteries spend about 30 percent of their time in prayerful reflection. Maybe we cannot spend that much time, but we must spend a significant amount of time to reflection or our lives will simply pass us by with very little true meaning.Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
How much time in a week or month do I set aside for reflection? Scripture tells us that we should set aside one day a week for honoring the Lord.

Jesus, help me to choose wisely in the way I allocate my time to the various demands on my life. Help me to reflect more on the meaning of my life.

St. Arnulf, pray for us.
