Fear Not

“Unless your faith is firm, you shall not be firm!” – Isaiah 7:9b

During the tour that I took to Canada, there were rides that I was afraid to take. One was the train ride which I thought would be very fast and dizzying like a bullet train.
As fear crept into my mind, I was led to pray. As it turned out, the train traveled gently to allow us to enjoy the panoramic views of the Canadian Rockies. To add to the comfort of the ride was the company of our tour mates. We even had the opportunity of sharing God’s goodness with our tour leader as he sat across us in the train.
But on the train ride I saw how rough the river was and, again, fear got the better of me. I practically begged to be excused from taking the river boat ride.
Again, prayers calmed my apprehensions. The following day, I experienced that the ride was totally serene and the river was calm. An added bonus was the charismatic boatman who told us about his mission-filled life. The train and boat rides became the high points of my trip as I learned to put my trust in God.
Truly, a firm faith casts away all fears. Donna España (donna@homeliving.com.ph)

REFLECTION:
Faith is the door to peace with God!

Lord, continue to deepen my faith in all circumstances of my life.

COMPANION

1st READING

Disaster is coming upon the nation in the form of foreign invasions. But the invasion we have to be most concerned about is that of sin. Sin is foreign to the life of holiness and the basic human life for that matter. God did not create us to sin — we have discovered how to do that on our own. Having done that, we now have to come back to God through repentance and conversion under the grace of the Holy Spirit.

Isaiah 7:1-9
1 In the days of Ahaz, king of Judah, son of Jotham, son of Uzziah, Rezin, king of Aram, and Pekah, king of Israel, son of Remaliah, went up to attack Jerusalem, but they were not able to conquer it. 2 When word came to the house of David that Aram was encamped in Ephraim, the heart of the king and heart of the people trembled, as the trees of the forest tremble in the wind. 3 Then the LORD said to Isaiah: Go out to meet Ahaz, you and your son Shear-jashub, at the end of the conduit of the upper pool, on the highway of the fuller’s field, 4 and say to him: Take care you remain tranquil and do not fear; let not your courage fail before these two stumps of smoldering brands [the blazing anger of Rezin and the Arameans, and of the son of Remaliah], 5 because of the mischief that Aram [Ephraim and the son of Remaliah] plots against you, saying, 6 “Let us go up and tear Judah asunder, make it our own by force, and appoint the son of Tabeel king there.” 7 Thus says the LORD: This shall not stand, it shall not be! 8 Damascus is the capital of Aram, and Rezin the head of Damascus; Samaria is the capital of Ephraim, and Remaliah’s son the head of Samaria. 9 But within sixty years and five, Ephraim shall be crushed, no longer a nation. Unless your faith is firm you shall not be firm!

Psalm 48:2-3a, 3b-4, 5-6, 7-8
R: God upholds his city for ever.
1 [2] Great is the LORD and wholly to be praised in the city of our God. His holy mountain, 2 [3] fairest of heights, is the joy of all the earth. (R) Mount Zion, “the recesses of the North,” is the city of the great King. 3 [4] God is with her castles; renowned is he as a stronghold. (R) 4 [5] For lo! the kings assemble, they come on together; 5 [6] they also see, and at once are stunned, terrified, routed. (R) 6 [7] Quaking seizes them there; anguish, like a woman’s in labor, 7 [8] as though a wind from the east were shattering ships of Tarshish. (R)

Repentance always remains a central aspect of the life of a disciple. Unfortunately we do not seem able to give up sinning altogether. This is what conversion and growth in holiness is all about — removing the sin in our lives and replacing it with virtue. This seems to be a lifelong process for us all as we continue to struggle against sin and  temptation until the day we die. Let us resolve to persevere in this struggle to the end.
2 Chronicles 33-34

Matthew 11:20-24
20 Jesus began to reproach the towns where most of his mighty deeds had been done, since they had not repented. 21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty deeds done in your midst had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would long ago have repented in sackcloth and ashes. 22 But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you. 23 And as for you, Capernaum: ‘Will you be exalted to heaven? You will go down to the netherworld.’ For if the mighty deeds done in your midst had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. 24 But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”

my reflections
t h i n k : Conversion and growth in holiness is all about removing the sin in our lives and replacing it with virtue.

SABBATH

GOD IS A JUST GOD

God is just and we need to remember that whatever we do in this life we will have to account for before Him on Judgment Day. I do not say this to scare you — well, maybe to instill a little bit of fear — but simply to make sure you know the truth and have the opportunity to consciously prepare for that day.
One of the scary things I see about the world today is people living as if there is no tomorrow, or living unmindful of the fact that they are morally responsible for their actions. People seem to think that if they can get away with it, then it is OK. Nothing could be further from the truth. It is not that God is a sort of “Big Brother” who constantly watches over us and keeps account of all that we do, but that He is a God of justice who will call us to account for the way we spent our lives.
What is the difference between the two? The answer is simple: “Big Brother” is out to catch you and punish you; God is hoping you will repent and live a just life where eternal life is the reward. In the first instance, there is no guarantee of mercy and grace for transformation; in the second, it is the basis of God’s relationship with His people. What we are required to do is simply avail of the grace and live responsibly. God is a God who wants us to be saved and so we can be sure that He is going to do everything He can to help us. With the “Big Brother” idea, there is no such promise. God wants us to be aware that moral responsibility is an important aspect of our lives. Those who live as if there is no tomorrow simply block off this idea altogether in order to free themselves for whatever may seem to be the expedient response at the time. Such situation ethics is doomed to immorality as it fails to recognize the moral imperative of absolute truth and thus the call to live moral lives is quickly forgotten.Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
How well do I discern the morality of my actions? Am I sure when I act that I am doing the right thing or do I see morality as a mere afterthought?

Father, You are all good and a God of justice and truth. Help me to understand the demands of moral living so that I can live a truly righteous and holy life.

St. Silas, pray for us.
