Channel of Blessings

“Lo, I will spread prosperity over her like a river, and the wealth of the nations like an overflowing torrent.” – Isaiah 66:12

I was having breakfast with my husband in Manila when an urgent text message came from a priest from San Pablo Seminary. He, together with three other priests, were on a semestral break from their teaching chores and asked if they could stay overnight that very evening at our place in Calamba. We acceded despite having to reschedule our appointments for that day and the next. We felt that this was a unique opportunity to serve God’s servants.
I remembered how Abraham did the same when visitors came to see him (Genesis 18). So we rushed to buy food and hurried to Calamba. During our conversations, we felt the priests’ financial burden in managing the seminary and we were inspired to contribute to their educational funds.
The following morning, as we savoured the joy of having made God’s servants happy, I received a phone call that was hard to believe. I won P100,000 as a scholarship grant from a bank! In less than 24 hours after we shared our blessings, God rewarded us promptly. Truly, we cannot outdo God in His generosity. Donna España (donna@homeliving.com.ph)

REFLECTION:
Give and it will come back to you more than you can ever imagine!

Lord, thank You for teaching me to be generous and to be a channel of Your blessings.

COMPANION

1st READING

There are times when we need to know that there is something better than what we are presently experiencing. One of the roles of the Prophets is to provide hope for the People of Israel in their darkest moments. The Prophets also remind us to be faithful to God’s call to us. It is good to reflect upon the words of the Prophets as they can still apply to us today in mysterious ways.

Isaiah 66:10-14c
10 Thus says the LORD: Rejoice with Jerusalem and be glad because of her, all you who love her; exult, exult with her, all you who were mourning over her! 11 Oh, that you may suck fully of the milk of her comfort, that you may nurse with delight at her abundant breasts! 12 For thus says the LORD: Lo, I will spread prosperity over her like a river, and the wealth of the nations like an overflowing torrent. As nurslings, you shall be carried in her arms, and fondled in her lap; 13 as a mother comforts her son, so will I comfort you; in Jerusalem you shall find your comfort. 14 When you see this, your heart shall rejoice, and your bodies flourish like the grass; the LORD’s power shall be known to his servants.

P S A L M

Psalm 66:1-3, 4-5, 6-7, 16, 20 (1)
R: Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.
1 Shout joyfully to God, all you on earth, 2 sing praise to the glory of his name; proclaim his glorious praise. 3 Say to God, “How tremendous are your deeds!” (R) 4 “Let all on earth worship and sing praise to you, sing praise to your name!” 5 Come and see the works of God, his tremendous deeds among the children of Adam. (R) 6 He has changed the sea into dry land; through the river they passed on foot; therefore let us rejoice in him. 7 He rules by his might forever. (R) 16 Hear now, all you who fear God, while I declare what he has done for me. 20 Blessed be God who refused me not my prayer or his kindness! (R)

2nd READING

Listen to what Paul tells us here in terms of our lives being crucified to the world as we are united with Christ. It is through the prism of the cross that we need to view our lives as it is only through it that we can make sense of all our experiences. Without the cross, suffering is incomprehensible; without the cross, there is no forgiveness of our sins. We need to embrace the cross for our own good and when we honestly do this, we will gain insight into the meaning of our lives.

Galatians 6:14-18
14 Brothers and sisters: May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. 15 For neither does circumcision mean anything, nor does uncircumcision, but only a new creation. 16 Peace and mercy be to all who follow this rule and to the Israel of God. 17 From now on, let no one make troubles for me; for I bear the marks of Jesus on my body. 18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers and sisters. Amen.

When we read about Jesus commissioning His disciples to go out and proclaim the Gospel, we need to hear His words addressed to us. We are the modern-day disciples with the responsibility to take the Gospel to the ends of the earth. The men and women of Jesus’ time have done their bit — it is up to us to take on the mission now. Are you up to the task? Let us pray that God will send more laborers for the harvest.

Luke 10:1-12, 17-20
1 At that time the Lord appointed seventy-two others whom he sent ahead of him in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit. 2 He said to them, “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest. 3 Go on your way; behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves. 4 Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals; and greet no one along the way. 5 Into whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this household.’ 6 If a peaceful person lives there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you. 7 Stay in the same house and eat and drink what is offered to you, for the laborer deserves his payment. Do not move about from one house to another. 8 Whatever town you enter and they welcome you, eat what is set before you, 9 cure the sick in it and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God is at hand for you.’ 10 Whatever town you enter and they do not receive you, go out into the streets and say, 11 ‘The dust of your town that clings to our feet, even that we shake off against you.’ Yet know this: the kingdom of God is at hand. 12 I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom on that day than for that town. 17 The seventy-two returned rejoicing, and said, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us because of your name.” 18 Jesus said, “I have observed Satan fall like lightning from the sky. 19 Behold, I have given you the power ‘to tread upon serpents’ and scorpions and upon the full force of the enemy and nothing will harm you. 20 Nevertheless, do not rejoice because the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice because your names are written in heaven.”

SABBATH

BOASTING ABOUT THE CROSS OF JESUS

Paul is able to boast about the cross of Jesus in his life because he has allowed the Holy Spirit to conform his life to that of Christ’s. Thus, the witness of Paul’s life is similar to that of Jesus’. This is what the process of discipleship is all about — working through the issues and aspects of our lives that need to be transformed so that our lives resemble more and more the life of Christ. In this way, everyChristian becomes “another Christ,” living and proclaiming the truth of the Gospel for all the world to see.
The cross is always a symbol of the means or, perhaps more correctly,  it is the means by which Christ removes sin from our lives. The more we allow the power of the cross to guide our words and actions and the choices we make daily, the smaller the role that sin will play in our lives until we reach the point that sin has no say at all in anything we do. The imagery of baptism is precisely this — we die with Christ on the cross in order that we might rise with Him in the resurrection to new life. Paul tells us in today’s reading that we have been transformed such that we have become “new creatures” in Christ. This is what it means to be a disciple of Jesus.
Paul also affirms that the call is universal — no one is excluded from its ambit. The Jewish people had a very exclusive notion of being the “Chosen People” of God. This meant they saw themselves as different from everyone else. The Gospel overturns this idea and affirms that the salvation Jesus won on the cross and through His resurrection from the dead is indeed for all men and women and not just a select few. Of course, people can choose to exclude themselves from the offer of salvation and set themselves apart from those who will be saved. However, I do not recommend such a course of action for you.Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
How do I understand my call to holiness? What role does the cross of Jesus play in my life at the moment, and what role am I willing to give it in the future?

Holy Spirit, open my mind to a fuller understanding of the role of the cross of Jesus in my life so that I will truly be able to live the  life of a disciple of Jesus.

St. Ulric, pray for us.
