MY B.A.G. OF MIRACLES

“As in the days when you came from the land of Egypt, show us wonderful signs.” – Micah 7:15

Years ago, I started a journal called My B.A.G. of Miracles. Originally, these were scribbles in my planner. In 2008, I created my blog using this theme. Here’s my welcome message:
Miracles are signs of God’s love for us. We are showered with them every day. Most go unnoticed because we don’t have an attitude of gratitude. My B.A.G. of Miracles is a journal of the miracles in my life. B is for Blessings — graces I received, answered prayers, provisions for my needs and good things people did for me. They are the miracles God blesses me with, directly or through others. A is for Accomplishments — my achievements, trials I overcame and work I completed. These are the miracles God works within me, instances that show I was empowered by the Almighty. G is for the Good I did for others — times when I was used as a channel for God’s Word or as His instrument. They are the miracles God blesses the people around me with when I allow Him to use me as a conduit.
I write these down that I may remember the wonders of God’s amazing love.Lella Santiago (mirellasantiago@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
Forget not the many favors of the Lord upon your life .

Lord, let me not allow a single miracle in my life to pass me by unnoticed.

COMPANION

1st READING

God calls all shepherds to care for the flock they have been given — the staff being a sign of their authority and leadership. The role of the Bishops is to care for the People of God. They need to make sure that they do not allow other concerns to distract them from this task. It is their duty to always stand in solidarity with the poor and to speak for them.

Micah 7:14-15, 18-20
14 Shepherd your people with your staff, the flock of your inheritance, that dwells apart in a woodland, in the midst of Carmel. Let them feed in Bashan and Gilead, as in the days of old; 15 as in the days when you came from the land of Egypt, show us wonderful signs. 18 Who is there like you, the God who removes guilt and pardons sin for the remnant of his inheritance; who does not persist in anger forever, but delights rather in clemency, 19 and will again have compassion on us, treading underfoot our guilt? You will cast into the depths of the sea all our sins; 20 you will show faithfulness to Jacob, and grace to Abraham, as you have sworn to our fathers from days of old.

P S A L M

Psalm 85:2-4, 5-6, 7-8
R: Lord, show us your mercy and love.
1 [2] You have favored, O LORD, your land; you have brought back the captives of Jacob. 2 [3] You have forgiven the guilt of your people; you have covered all their sins. 3 [4] You have withdrawn all your wrath; you have revoked your burning anger. (R) 4 [5] Restore us, O God our savior, and abandon your displeasure against us. 5 [6] Will you be ever angry with us, prolonging your anger to all generations? (R) 6 [7] Will you not instead give us life; and shall not your people rejoice in you? 7 [8] Show us, O LORD, your kindness, and grant us your salvation. (R)

Jesus reminds us that it is our choices that are going to contribute to the state of our salvation or lack thereof, not our bloodlines. We need to realize that discipleship is all about choices — choosing God over the world; good over wrong; holiness over banality and so on. Are we willing to make these choices? It is good to ponder at length the choices we made yesterday and will make today and tomorrow.

Matthew 12:46-50
46 While Jesus was speaking to the crowds, his mother and his brothers appeared outside, wishing to speak with him. 47 Someone told him, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, asking to speak with you.” 48 But he said in reply to the one who told him, “Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?” 49 And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. 50 For whoever does the will of my heavenly Father is my brother, and sister, and mother.”

my reflections
t h i n k : Discipleship is all about choices — choosing God over the world; good over wrong; holiness over banality and so on.

SABBATH

WHAT IS THE NATURE OF DISCIPLESHIP?

The above question is one of the critical questions for the Church to answer today. What exactly do we mean by “discipleship” in the 21st century? In many ways the answer is exactly the same as last century and the century before that. However, perhaps I have asked the wrong question: how do we live discipleship in the 21st century? But the answer is still the same, I hear you reply. This is true because the heart of both the nature and the expression of discipleship, no matter how you want to examine it, is obedience to God’s will!
If obedience to God’s will is lacking in a person’s life, they cannot be called disciples of Jesus. Obedience to God’s will is the litmus test of discipleship. Yet, I find it truly amazing that many people today very conveniently forget about the virtue of obedience when they speak of discipleship. Many religious men and women are no longer interested in their vow of obedience to their superior; many priests treat their promise of obedience to their bishop and his successors with scant respect. Why is there such a struggle with obedience?
I think the answer rests in the growing level of individualism in our society. Children grow up in a society that highly values freedom of thought and expression. This is a good thing but freedom has to be understood within the context of the truths that govern them. True freedom is not absolute — it is always in submission to the truth. It is this aspect of freedom that is poorly understood today.
Jesus tells us that it is the truth that sets us free (John 8:32). This means that freedom is subservient to the truth; it must always be guided by the truth of our humanity — who we are as beings created in the image and likeness of God. Freedom is not being free to do whatever one feels like doing, but freedom to follow the truth that God puts before us as essential to our human nature. Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
What do I understand by freedom when I speak of it in terms of the freedom to choose what I will do in a particular situation?

Jesus, You have freed us from the powers of sin and death and opened for us the way to true human fulfillment. Help us to understand the demands of truth as we exercise freedom in our lives.

St. Margaret of Antioch, pray for us.
