Shut Down for God

To Him who is able to keep you from falling and to bring you faultless and joyful before his glorious presence. – Jude 24

Years ago, there was an amazing story in the newspaper entitled “Motel Chain Shuts Down for God.” It was about Wyden King, chairman of Anito, a popular motel chain. It served as a site for lovers’ trysts for decades. The story said that the business had 11,000 customers and brought in as much as P2 million a day. Yet Mr. King decided to close it down because God told him to!
According to the news item, God ordered him to stop expanding in 1994, but it took a long time for him to obey. “I was blinded by money, but it took the grace of the Lord to open my eyes…. Yet it was a struggle to let go,” he was quoted as saying.
We all have our own struggles against things we know are wrong yet are so tempting and delightful to the flesh. For
some it may be cigarettes. Or a married lover. Or an under-the-table deal.
Sometimes, like Wyden, it takes years for us to do what is right. Don’t despair. Just ask God to hold on to you. He will guide you back into His presence. Lella Santiago (mirellasantiago@yahoo.com)
2
REFLECTION:
What are you holding on to that is keeping you from enjoying God’s presence?

Lord, help me to put my love for You above all earthly loves.

Sts. Marcellinus and Peter, martyrs, pray for us.

1ST READING

It is only by the mercy of God that we have received the gift of eternal life. Jude reminds us of this as he exhorts us to surrender to the Holy Spirit and allow Him to guide us in the path of God’s will. He also reminds us to care for one another in love. Love is the true measure of a disciple of Jesus, not hours spent in prayer or theological knowledge.

Jude 17, 20-25
17 Beloved, remember the words spoken beforehand by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ. 20 Build yourselves up in your most holy faith; pray in the Holy Spirit. 21 Keep yourselves in the love of God and wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. 22 On those who waver, have mercy; 23 save others by snatching them out of the fire; on others have mercy with fear, abhorring even the outer garment stained by the flesh. 24 To the one who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you unblemished and exultant, in the presence of his glory, 25 to the only God, our savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord be glory,  majesty, power, and authority from ages past, now, and for ages to come. Amen.

P S A L M

Psalm 63:2, 3-4, 5-6
R: My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God.
1 [2] O God, you are my God whom I seek; for you my flesh pines and my soul thirsts like the earth, parched, lifeless and without water. (R) 2 [3] Thus have I gazed toward you in the sanctuary to see your power and your glory, 3 [4] for your kindness is a greater good than life; my lips shall glorify you. (R) 4 [5] Thus will I bless you while I live; lifting up my hands, I will call upon your name. 5 [6] As with the riches of a banquet shall my soul be satisfied, and with exultant lips my mouth shall praise you. (R)

GOSPEL

Jesus is not interested in the semantics of an argument; He is interested in action. When and how do we put into practice the Gospel values we have come to know through our conversion? This is what really matters: Have we truly entered into the process of our salvation or not? Jesus wants to save us by His grace but He has to know that is what we want, too. He will judge what we want by the actions we perform. Let us choose wisely what we do and do not do.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Mark 11:27-33
27 Jesus and his disciples returned once more to Jerusalem. As he was walking in the temple area, the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders approached him 28 and said to him, “By what authority are you doing these things? Or who gave you this authority to do them?” 29 Jesus said to them, “I shall ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. 30 Was John’s baptism of heavenly or of human origin? Answer me.” 31 They discussed this among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘Of heavenly origin,’ he will say, ‘Then why did you not believe him?’ 32 But shall we say, ‘Of human origin’?” — they feared the crowd, for they all thought John really was a prophet. 33 So they said to Jesus in reply, “We do not know.” Then Jesus said to them, “Neither shall I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

THE REAL SOURCE OF AUTHORITY

The Gospel of Mark reminds us of the people in authority who forgot the very source of their authority. They asked Jesus the source of His authority: “By what authority are you doing these things? Or who gave you this authority to do them?” Strange that they were asking Jesus when they should be asking it to themselves. They were caught by their own trap. They could not recognize the fact that they were blinded and could not see the Author of Life unfolding before them: the blind see, the lame walk, the good news preached to them. They would be focused on astrology but would not see the One who held the stars. They were so focused on the issue of blasphemy but they could not see the good news of the glory of God.
In contrast, the psalmist sings of the ardent longing: “My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God.” It acknowledges God’s authority: “Thus have I gazed toward you in the sanctuary to see your power and your glory, for your kindness is a greater good than life; my lips shall glorify you.”
Jesus was radical in His approach: He shook their lifestyle and the very source of their power. Earlier, Jesus overturned the tables of moneychangers and traders because they have desecrated the Temple.
What is the real source of authority? The source is the Spirit of wisdom, courage and love. Even more important is the end of all authority — it does not call attention to itself but proclaims, “Glory be to this only God our savior, through Jesus Christ, our Lord.”
Authority is not lording over others but laying down one’s life so that others may live! Fr. Teodulo P. Gonzales, S.J

REFLECTION QUESTIONS: What are your traps or excuses before you acknowledge the Author of Life? If you discern your life, how do you recognize the traps of the enemy?

Lord Jesus, help me to liberate myself from the traps of false authority in my life.

Thanksgiving on Credit

“Therefore I tell you, all that you ask for in prayer, believe that you will receive it and it shall be yours.” – Mark 11:24

Over the years, I’ve been changing how I pray. As I get older, more and more, I ask out of deep trust, not out of extreme anxiety. Because of this, most of my prayers are now grateful prayers.
I love thanking God for what He has given me and for what He will give to me. So when I need something, I now usually say, “Thank You for giving it to me.”
If I feel sick, instead of asking, “Lord, heal my sickness,” I say, “Thank You, Lord, for healing me, making me strong and healthy in body, soul and spirit.”
If I need P2.2 million for our ministry, instead of asking, “Lord, I’m desperate, please give me money,” I say, “Thank You that I now have more than P2.2 million flowing to me for our ministry’s projects.”
Praying in this way is beautiful. And usually, this kind of asking comes with something else: action. To me, prayer and action are one. Both are fueled by God’s love.
When you ask with deepened trust, you’ll also act in deepened trust. Not driven by panic, or worry, or anger. Then things will fall into place. You create your miracles. Bo Sanchez (bosanchez@kerygmafamily.com)

REFLECTION:
How do you pray? Is it with gratitude and trust, or with panic and worry?

Grant me the right disposition when praying, Lord.

1ST READING

God has given us minds by which we can understand the truth of who we are as beings created in His image and likeness. St. Peter reminds us to use our minds soberly when making decisions, that is, not to allow our emotions to overrule them. Our emotions are great servants when put in submission to the truth as we execute or plan our next step of action.

1 Peter 4:7-13
7 Beloved: The end of all things is at hand. Therefore, be serious and sober-minded so that you will be able to pray. 8 Above all, let your love for one another be intense, because love covers a multitude of sins. 9 Be hospitable to one another without complaining. 10 As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God’s varied grace. 11 Whoever preaches, let it be with the words of God; whoever serves, let it be with the strength that God supplies, so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. 12 Beloved, do not be surprised that a trial by fire is occurring among you, as if something strange were happening to you. 13 But rejoice to the extent that you share in the sufferings of Christ, so that when his glory is revealed you may also rejoice exultantly.

P S A L M

Psalm 96:10, 11-12, 13
R: The Lord comes to judge the earth.
10 Say among the nations: The Lord is king. He has made the world firm, not to be moved; he governs the peoples with equity. (R) 11 Let the heavens be glad and the earth rejoice; let the sea and what fills it resound; 12 let the plains be joyful and all that is in them! Then shall all the trees of the forest exult. (R) 13 Before the Lord, for he comes; for he comes to rule the earth. He shall rule the world with justice and the peoples with his constancy. (R)

GOSPEL

The story of the fig tree is a parable about the fruitfulness of our lives. God gives us numerous opportunities to respond to the gift of His grace. However, we will come to a point when we will run out of time. We must respond and show God that we appreciate the gift of salvation He has given us. How? Through the good deeds we perform. They do not save us, but they certainly express our thanks that God has saved us.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
I choose you from the world, to go and bear fruit that lasts, says the Lord.

Mark 11:11-26
11 Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple area. He looked around at everything and, since it was already late, went out to Bethany with the Twelve. 12 The next day as they were leaving Bethany he was hungry. 13 Seeing from a distance a fig tree in leaf, he went over to see if he could find anything on it. When he reached it he found nothing but leaves; it was not the time for figs. 14 And he said to it in reply, “May no one ever eat of your fruit again!” And his disciples heard it. 15 They came to Jerusalem, and on entering the temple area he began to drive out those selling and buying there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who were selling doves. 16 He did not permit anyone to carry anything through the temple area. 17 Then he taught them saying, “Is it not written: ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples’? But you have made it a den of thieves.” 18 The chief priests and the scribes came to hear of it and were seeking a way to put him to death, yet they feared him because the whole crowd was astonished at his teaching. 19 When evening came, they went out of the city. 20 Early in the morning, as they were walking along, they saw the fig tree withered to its roots. 21 Peter remembered and said to him, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree that you cursed has withered.” 22 Jesus said to them in reply, “Have faith in God. 23 Amen, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it shall be done for him. 24 Therefore I tell you, all that you ask for in prayer, believe that you will receive it and it shall be yours. 25 When you stand to pray, forgive anyone against whom you have a grievance, so that your heavenly Father may in turn forgive you your transgressions.”

think: Our good deeds do not save us, but they certainly express our thanks that God has saved us.

SABBATH

GO BACK TO THE SANCTUARY

A priest I met at a seminar in Gabaldon, Nueva Ecija, once said, “Gabaldon used to be a place where people found rest and recreation because of so many trees around. But now, it looks as if the place was raped.” He was really saying the place was desecrated. The once-upon-a-time sanctuary and watershed was no more. How many more mountains, forests and rivers have lost their sense of sanctuary due to illegal logging, mining and pollution?
When Jesus was angry because people turned the Temple into a den of thieves, wasn’t He mourning the loss of sanctuary? Are there other violations, scandals and trespassing that happen at present that desecrate also the temple of our bodies?
The powerful persons during Jesus’ time were so blinded and numbed with their ways that they plotted to kill Jesus because He challenged their ways. In a prophetic gesture, Jesus overturned the tables of the moneychangers and merchants and lamented, “You have turned the Temple into a den of thieves.”
What was stolen? What was taken away from the Temple? I suppose they lost their center and core values: God, simplicity, compassion.
The Gospel of Mark reminds us that like the barren fig tree, we have not harvested any fruits. Have we become complacent and extravagant to the point of losing our sanctuary? Have we gained the world in exchange for the stolen soul?
The psalmist reminds us: “The Lord comes to judge the earth.” There is a judgment that can challenge us to discern the consequences of our choices. The Spirit of the Lord can challenge our corrupt ways to restore the integrity of our lives.
The Gospel challenges us to go back to the sanctuary of the temple: pray, believe, forgive. Fr. Teodulo P. Gonzales, S.J

REFLECTION QUESTIONS: What radical change is Jesus calling you to do? What gifts are you being asked to offer?

Lord, like the moneychangers in the Temple, I have sometimes desecrated Your temple. Help me to clean up my mess and restore the sanctuary of the Holy Spirit in my life.

Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary
31
Jesus, the Healer

“Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.” – Luke 1:45

October 2010 was a traumatic time for my family. My sister was diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer while struggling to fit in and raise a family in Adelaide, South Australia.
I remember waking up in the middle of the night in Manila, shaken and with heart palpitations out of concern for her and her family. All that my family and I could do was to hold on to God’s miraculous healing and mercy. In fact, we prayed day and night, and sang worship in the midst of all the fear we felt in our hearts.
Then on November 10, after her nine-hour abdominal surgery to remove the cancerous growth, and before she started a six-cycle chemotherapy treatment, she had a vision. It was God the Father telling her, “My child, now I’m completely healing you. Now, now, now.”
Five months later, having barely finished her chemo treatment, my sister’s CA 125 test revealed a value of 9 U/ml. An average, healthy person’s CA 125 level is below 35. She’s cancer-free! God heals miraculously then as He heals now!  Eugene Cailao (eugenecailao@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
What factors in my life hinder me from totally surrendering to and believing inGod’s promises to me?

Father God, strip me of all my pretenses, issues and pride; that I may be able to fully trust and have faith in You forever. May I be like a child who trusts completely in his father whose voice alone comforts him.

St. Mechtildis, pray for us.

1ST READING

Mary goes to visit Elizabeth in order to do what she can to help the latter in her pregnancy. It is highly likely that she needs help as she was way past childbearing years when she became pregnant. First, it is Mary’s obedience to God that attracts our attention to her and now, it is her selflessness. Any study of her life is like a course in how to live as a Christian — Class 101.

Zephaniah 3:14-18 (or Romans 12:9-16)
14 Shout for joy, O daughter Zion! Sing joyfully, O Israel! Be glad and exult with all your heart, O daughter Jerusalem! 15 The Lord has removed the judgment against you, he has turned away your enemies; the King of Israel, the Lord, is in your midst, you have no further misfortune to fear. 16 On that day, it shall be said to Jerusalem: Fear not, O Zion, be not discouraged! 17 The Lord, your God, is in your midst, a mighty savior; he will rejoice over you with gladness, and renew you in his love, he will sing joyfully because of you, 18 as one sings at festivals.

Isaiah 12:2-3, 4, 5-6
R: Among you is the great and Holy One of Israel.
2 God indeed is my savior; I am confident and unafraid. My strength and my courage is the Lord, and he has been my savior. 3 With joy you will draw water at the fountain of salvation. (R) 4 Give thanks to the Lord, acclaim his name; among the nations make known his deeds, proclaim how exalted is his name. (R) 5 Sing praise to the Lord for his glorious achievement; let this be known throughout all the earth. 6 Shout with exultation, O city of Zion, for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel! (R)

GOSPEL

Mary’s role in the work of salvation is unique. No one will ever bear the Son of God in their womb again. Yet, we are all called to bear the Son of God to the world through the lives we live — wherever we are, whatever we do and however we do it. Let us seek to grow in our understanding of the mission God has for each one of us so that we can fulfill it.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
Blessed are you, O Virgin Mary, who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.

Luke 1:39-56
39 Mary set out and traveled to the hill country in haste to a town of Judah, 40 where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, 42 cried out in a loud voice and said, “Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. 43 And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. 45 Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.” 46 And Mary said: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; 47 my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, 48 for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed: 49 the Mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name. 50 He has mercy on those who fear him in every generation. 51 He has shown strength of his arm, he has scatteredthe proud in their conceit. 52 He has cast down the mighty from their thrones and lifted up the lowly. 53 He has filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he has sent away empty. 54 He has come to help his servant Israel for he has remembered his promise of mercy, 55 the promise he made to our fathers, to Abraham and to his children forever.” 56 Mary remained with her about three months and then returned to her home.

BURST OF BLESSINGS

The story of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the spirit of today’s liturgy is the exemplification of God’s graciousness. The grace that she received from God is the greatest wish of every Jewish lady: that of being chosen by Yahweh- God to be the mother of the much awaited Messiah. With such experience of God’s goodness, she goes with solicitude to visit Elizabeth, her cousin, to share the news of her unique pregnancy and to assist Elizabeth who was herself gifted with motherhood in her advanced years. The words of Mary’s “Magnificat,” however, underline to us that her visit to her cousin was more than a mere family event. Everything is part of the spiral of blessings that reaches out from her to the generations after her.
This has always been God’s way — that His grace burst out from the one He calls to the generations after. With Abraham, He promised blessings to the descendants after him. With Jacob, He blessed the 12 tribes that will form the chosen nation of Israel. With Moses, God opened His gift of liberation for all of Moses’ people, no matter how stubborn and stiff-necked they were. In David, Yahweh-God extended the blessings of a kingdom to generations after, until around 525 B.C. In the course of His three-year ministry, Jesus Himself used the figure of the sun to illustrate how the Heavenly Father spreads His benevolence to all, even to the good and the bad, the just and the unjust. In fact, during the evening meal that marked His last night with the disciples, Jesus ended the meal with a prayer of intercession for His disciples and for all those who will come to believe because of them.
Human memory works in a similar pattern. Good deeds done by an ancestor are remembered by others and they become a benediction for their children and their children’s children. The descendants reap the harvest of goodness long after the well-appreciated forefather is laid to rest.
It is no wonder then that grace is described in songs as a river flowing. Grace flows on and on — it bursts its way through. Fr. Domie Guzman, SSP

REFLECTION QUESTION: Look into your own family line. Identify each member’s contribution to your life of blessings as a family. In what way can you also contribute to the burst of goodness and blessings in your family and the future generations?

Thank You, Lord, for my family. Use me to bless them even more, Lord.
