Praying for you, Bo Sanchez 24 July Saturday TODAY'S READINGS: DIDACHE | COMPANION | SABBATH DIDACHE Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top COMPANION Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top SABBATH   CAN PURE EVIL EXIST IN OUR LIVES?   The closest we get to pure evil is Satan himself. Yet, Satan was created by God so there must still be a semblance of goodness in him. Will Satan be  redeemed? No. He has chosen eternal separation as his lot in life. The question of good and evil (theodicy) is one that has puzzled philosophers, theologians and thinkers since the beginning of thought. Classically, the problem can be put so: If God is all good and all powerful, then surely He is obliged to see that evil does not exist. If He fails to do this, then He demonstrates that He is either not all good or not all powerful. The only way to understand the fault of this argument is to understand what it means to make moral choices. The ability to make a moral choice is at the heart of what it means to be human. There is no such thing as moral responsibility if we do not have moral freedom. Now God has given us the gift of freedom whereby we choose to be either moral or immoral beings. This is the heart of the dilemma: there is no morality, indeed no humanness, that has any meaning without freedom to choose bad over good, wrong over right. Hence, God is not the author of evil. He cannot be expected to ensure that evil never comes into existence, for to do so would be to deny us the gift of our humanity — a gift that is the essence of Creation. Our ability to choose badly is not a fault on the part of the Creator, but a necessary aspect of being human. Without the capacity to act morally, we would be like the animals — amoral creatures not made in the image of God but whose essence is bound up in His choice of goodness alone. He never chooses bad over good. This is why it is so important that we work hard to understand the moral issues of our day, in particular our individual lives. The choices we make will determine whether we align ourselves with God or the devil. Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL   Reflection Question: How well do I understand the moral issues that affect my life? Should I be doing more to increase my understanding of them?   Holy Spirit, enlighten my heart with the truth that my humanity demands of me in terms of being a truly moral person.
