SHAPE YOUR WORLD BEFORE IT SHAPES YOU

But according to his promise, we await new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. – 2 Peter 3:13

My friend “Jim” was a drug addict. He lived in a rehabilitation center for a year. He went back home a new man.
But a few days after, an old friend who was a user visited him at home and offered him shabu. Jim refused. But he kept on meeting his old friends. After only three months, Jim relapsed and his addiction was more severe than before.
What caused his downfall? He shaped his inner world, but he didn’t shape his outer world. He needed a new set of friends. He needed a new itinerary. He also needed new hobbies, new music, new activities.
It’s pretty obvious. If you’re an alcoholic, stop hanging out with friends who drink. Hang out with new friends who don’t. If you’re a gambler, cut friendships with other gamblers. Hang out with people who don’t gamble.
Many people don’t use their power to choose their friends. They just accept the people who call up, visit and appear on their doorstep. Big mistake. Go out and choose the kind of people you like to become.
And then fulfill you dreams. Bo Sanchez (bosanchez@kerygmafamily.com)

REFLECTION:
What is it in my outer world that is influencing me in the wrong way?

Dear Lord, grant me the grace to detach myself from anything and anyone that obstructs me from becoming who You want me to be.

St. Iñigo, pray for us.

1st READING

The Second Coming of Jesus will signal that the Church has completed its task of bringing the Good News to all nations. While it has not happened, perhaps it indicates that we have not yet completed this task. Let us look to what our responsibilities are in the plan of God and be faithful to accomplishing them.

2 Peter 3:12-15a, 17-18
12 Beloved: Wait for and haste the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved in flames and the elements melted by fire. 13 But according to his promise we await new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. 14 Therefore, beloved, since you await these things, be eager to be found without spot or blemish before him, at peace. 15 And consider the patience of our Lord as salvation. 17 Therefore, beloved, since you are forewarned, be on your guard not to be led into the error of the unprincipled and to fall from your own stability. 18 But grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

P S A L M

Psalm 90:2, 3-4, 10, 14, 16
R: In every age, O Lord, you have been our refuge.
2 Before the mountains were begotten and the earth and the world were brought forth, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. (R) 3 You turn man back to dust, saying, “Return, O children of men.” 4 For a thousand years in your sight are as yesterday, now that it is past, or as a watch of the night. (R) 10 Seventy is the sum of our years, or eighty, if we are strong, and most of them are fruitless toil, for they pass quickly and we drift away. (R) 14 Fill us at daybreak with your kindness, that we may shout for joy and gladness all our days. 16 Let your work be seen by your servants and your glory by their children. (R)

G O S P E L

Taxes and questions regarding taxes are the bane of our lives. I am sure we would all be happy to do without them. Or would we? Do we want roads to drive on? Do we want government services and armies to defend our country? Without taxes none of these would be affordable, nor would there be any courts to settle disputes. While the reasonable level of taxes is debatable, it is still our godly duty to pay them.

Mark 12:13-17
13 Some Pharisees and Herodians were sent to Jesus to ensnare him in his speech. 14 They came and said to him, “Teacher, we know that you are a truthful man and that you are not concerned with anyone’s opinion. You do not regard a person’s status but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not? Should we pay or should we not pay?” 15 Knowing their hypocrisy he said to them, “Why are you testing me? Bring me a denarius to look at.” 16 They brought one to him and he said to them, “Whose image and inscription is this?” They replied to him, “Caesar’s.” 17 So Jesus said to them, “Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.” They were utterly amazed at him.

my reflections
think:  While the reasonable level of taxes is debatable, it is still our godly duty to pay them.

WHILE WAITING

Peter’s letter today reminds me of a study about school children being left by their teacher for a while, each one being given a marshmallow to eat. While they were free to eat it as they pleased, the children were told that those who could wait till the teacher got back and who could hold on to their marshmallow would be given more as reward. Those who wanted instant gratification ate their share just as soon as the teacher left. Those who somehow knew how to delay gratification and waited got more when the teacher returned.
Peter was writing to a church-inwaiting then. They were expecting the second coming of the Lord. And Peter helped them clarify what it meant to be waiting — yes, to wait actively in hope.
The children who could not wait simply gave in. They grabbed and gobbled to their immediate gustatory delight! But those who waited actively behaved differently. They tapped their fingers, traipsed, talked and tinkered. They sang. They did not wait passively but actively.
They were engaged, involved and committed to the demands of the moment. We are also a people in waiting. We live the in-between times of the Church, redeemed by that one saving act of the one mediator, Jesus Christ. We are a people on the march, like the Israelites on the desert. We long for our own Promised Land, the final and definitive one, whose fullness and fulfillment is not ours to pin down as to where, when and how. We are waiting for more than just an extra marshmallow. We are waiting for that place of utter bliss where dirty marshes are no more and where joy does not mellow — “what no eye has seen nor ear heard” — heaven, that is our only true and permanent home.
We ought to be like those children who waited actively. We ought to be engaged. We ought to be committed to helping God save a world that still  wallows in the marshes of sin. Let’s take it from Peter: “while waiting for this, make every effort to be found without stain or defilement, and at peace in his sight.” Fr. Chito Dimaranan, SDB

Reflection Question:
When you are made to wait, what do you usually do? Wait passively or wait actively?

Lord Jesus, remind me always that nothing is ever useless — waiting time included. Helpn me to use it for Your purpose and glory.

St. Iñigo, pray for us.

Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

TURNING 50

“The Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name.” – Luke 1:49

While writing this reflection, I chanced upon an email I wrote to a dear old friend before I turned 50.
It read, “As I was walking home from Church this morning, my heart welled into a prayer of thanksgiving. He has done wondrous things in my life and I told the Lord, ‘Please help me to surrender my life to You each day, my will to Your will, so that Your glory may be made more manifest in me.’” I wrote further, “Days before today, I’ve been introspecting and a significant feeling arose — that of a sense of letting go of old dreams, old wishes, even prayers that God has chosen not to answer the way I wanted Him to. Maybe I am being more content with what is in my life now rather than hoping for the things that are not truly meant to be.”
50 has made me see the landscape of my life and appreciate every blessing, every trial, every difficulty, every crossroad, every failure and every success that happened in my life.
Turning 50 has made me relax in God’s abiding presence and work in my life, knowing that my life is in His hands. Tess V. Atienza (svp_tvatienza@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
What has the Lord done in your life? Be thankful for it.

Lord, help me to see Your work in my life and to trust that You know what’s best for me.

COMPANION

1st READING

The Visitation is a celebration of Mary’s unselfish love for her cousin Elizabeth and at the same time the call for us all to love one another in the same unselfish way. True love is essentially selfless and never self-interested. To love is to choose to place the other person’s needs before your own. Let us reflect upon this truth before we make decisions that we are not ready to carry through to the end.

Zephaniah 3:14-18a (or Romans 12:9-16)
14 Shout for joy, O daughter Zion! Sing joyfully, O Israel! Be glad and exult with all your heart, O daughter Jerusalem! 15 The LORD has removed the judgment against you, he has turned away your enemies; the King of Israel, the LORD, is in your midst, you have no further misfortune to fear. 16 On that day, it shall be said to Jerusalem: Fear not, O Zion, be not discouraged! 17 The LORD, your God, is in your midst, a mighty savior; he will rejoice over you with gladness, and renew you in his love, he will sing joyfully because of you, 18 as one sings at festivals.

P S A L M

Isaiah 12:2-3, 4bcd, 5-6
R: Among you is the great and Holy One of Israel.
2 God indeed is my savior; I am confident and unafraid. My strength and my courage is the LORD, and he has been my savior. 3 With joy you will draw water at the fountain of salvation. (R) 4 Give thanks to the LORD, acclaim his name; among the nations make known his deeds, proclaim how exalted is his name. (R) 5 Sing praise to the LORD for his glorious achievement; let this be known throughout all the earth. 6 Shout with exultation, O city of Zion, for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel! (R)

G O S P E L

As we celebrate the many Feast days of Mary, the Church reminds us that she stands not only as our mother but as the perfect example of discipleship. Let us pray that we will have the grace and strength that she had to respond to God’s call and to persevere in it to the end. It was not easy, but we never hear her complain. I am sure it also had its joys. That is the way life will be for us in our faith walk — a mixture of joy and pain, blessing and suffering.

Luke 1:39-56
39 Mary set out and traveled to the hill country in haste to a town of Judah, 40 where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, 42 cried out in a loud voice and said, “Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. 43 And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. 45 Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.” 46 And Mary said: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; 47 my spirit rejoices in God my savior. 48 For he has looked upon his handmaid’s lowliness; behold, from now on will all ages call me blessed. 49 The Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. 50 His mercy is from age to age to those who fear him. 51 He has shown might with his arm, dispersed the arrogant of mind and heart. 52 He has thrown down the rulers from their thrones but lifted up the lowly. 53 The hungry he has filled with good things; the rich he has sent away empty. 54 He has helped Israel his servant, remembering his mercy, 55 according to his promise to our fathers, to Abraham and to his descendants forever.” 56 Mary remained with her about three months and then returned to her home.

my reflections
t h i n k : To love is to choose to place the other person’s needs before your own.

A PRECIOUS VISIT

Every visit is a precious gift whose value exceeds what money can buy. It is a priceless treasure not because of the gift but because of the giver. When we visit someone, we give ourselves to the person we visit. We give our time and effort in making the visit. ,we remember the visit that the Blessed Mother paid to her cousin, Elizabeth. We celebrate her visit because it was a gift of herself to Elizabeth. She went to Judea, the hometown of Zechariah and Elizabeth, not for a grand vacation. She went there in haste, despite her own pregnancy, to serve Elizabeth. By doing so, the Blessed Mother did not only share with Elizabeth the unmerited gift of her becoming the mother of the Savior but also Elizabeth’s own cause of joy and anxiety.
That she conceived in her old age and despite her being barren, caused Elizabeth the kind of inexpressible joy that even her husband, Zechariah, could not speak about. However, the same event caused her anxiety, given the difficulties of conceiving and delivering a baby in her advanced age. In such a moment of mixed emotion and confusing experience, the Blessed Mother’s visit was a most welcome one. The Blessed Mother’s presence highlighted the joy in Elizabeth’s condition and totally erased any trace of anxiety there was. The Blessed Mother’s going out of her way and making sacrifices to be with Elizabeth made the visit we remember today a reason to celebrate for all ages.
As she shared in her cousin’s difficulties, the Blessed Mother brought Jesus not only to Elizabeth but also to Zechariah and to John who was yet in the womb. She brought Jesus to them, not only because Jesus was already in her womb, but also because she herself became to them like Jesus who came to serve and not to be served.
Visit someone today. Serve someone today. The world may not remember and celebrate our visit. But heaven will never forget.Fr. Bobby Titco

Reflection Question:
Let us make every visit a priceless gift. Let us give ourselves, our time and effort to the people we visit.

Jesus, Your mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary, brought You to her cousin Elizabeth and her family. Like her, may I always bring You to all the people I meet each day. And may I greet, love and serve You in them as well. Amen.

St. Vitalis, pray for us.
