Does God Complain ?

“... and whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me.” – Matthew 10:38

Most of us read Bo Sanchez’s blog but I was surprised one day when he posted a “rant.” Being a blogger myself, I know this all too well: a “rant” is a way to let off steam or, in Tagalog, “nagrereklamo para gumaan ang loob.” Personally, my blogged rants revolve around TV shows like Jericho being cancelled and how obsessed people are about the Apple iPhone — hardly earth-shattering issues.
But it was Bo’s first time to post a public rant so I paid attention. He expressed frustration about people who insisted that the Kerygma Conference (which comes every November) and his overseas seminars should be given free. It was obvious in his statement, “I don’t have wings so I have to pay the plane so I can teach in your country.”
At that time, Bo wasn’t at peace — as if echoing Matthew 10:34, “Do not think that I have come to bring peace upon the earth” and the text from Isaiah about God “ranting” that our offerings to Him are not acceptable because, “Your hands are full of blood” (Isaiah 1:15).
Let’s pause a while to reflect what we can do better to help God’s servants instead of aggravating them. Jomar Hilario (jomar.hilario@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
“Whoever receives a righteous man because he is righteous will receive a righteous man’s reward.”  (Matthew 10:41)

Have you served God’s servants recently?

COMPANION

1st READING

God is fed up with the sacrifices and burnt offerings of the people because they are not accompanied by holiness of heart. It seems that the people were making no attempt to avoid sin, thinking that an offering could be made at the Temple anyway in order to wipe it away. Sacrifices and penances are useless unless they are accompanied by a humble and contrite heart. I hope we are aware of this and act accordingly.
\
Isaiah 1:10-17
10 Hear the word of the LORD, princes of Sodom! Listen to the instruction of our God, people of Gomorrah! 11 What care I for the number of your sacrifices? says the LORD. I have had enough of whole-burnt rams and fat of fatlings; in the blood of calves, lambs and goats I find no pleasure. 12 When you come in to visit me, who asks these things of you? 13 Trample my courts no more! Bring no more worthless offerings; your incense is loathsome to me. New moon and sabbath, calling of assemblies, octaves with wickedness these I cannot bear. 14 Your new moons and festivals I detest; they weigh me down, I tire of the load. 15 When you spread out your hands, I close my eyes to you; though you pray the more, I will not listen. Your hands are full of blood! 16 Wash yourselves clean! Put away your misdeeds from before my eyes; cease doing evil; 17 learn to do good. Make justice your aim redress the wronged, hear the orphan’s plea, defend the widow.

Psalm 50:8-9, 16bc-17, 21, 23
R: To the upright I will show the saving power of God.
8 “Not for your sacrifices do I rebuke you, for your burnt offerings are before me always. 9 I take from your house no bullock, no goats out of your fold.” (R) 16 “Why do you recite my statutes, and profess my covenant with your mouth, 17 though you hate discipline and cast my words behind you?” (R) 21 “When you do these things, shall I be deaf to it? Or do you think that I am like yourself? I will correct you by drawing them up before your eyes. 23 He that offers praise as a sacrifice glorifies me; and to him that goes the right way I will show the salvation of God.” (R)

G O S P E L
To be a disciple of Jesus involves making choices for the Kingdom of God over and above all else. To really take on the call of a disciple means we will have to develop a single-minded focus on the Kingdom of God. This requires sacrifices on our part, something the modern world is not very comfortable with these days. Are you willing to make  sacrifices for the Kingdom of God? If so, then you are ready to pursue the life of a disciple of Jesus.

Matthew 10:34-11:1
34 Jesus said to his Apostles: “Do not think that I have come to bring peace upon the earth. I have come to bring not peace but the sword. 35 For I have come to  set a man ‘against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; 36 and one’s enemies will be those of his household.’ 37 “Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; 38 and whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 40 “Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me. 41 Whoever receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever receives a righteous man because he is righteous will receive a righteous man’s reward. 42 And whoever gives only a cup of cold water to one of these little ones to drink because he is a disciple — amen, I say to you, he will surely not lose his reward.” 11: 1 When Jesus finished giving these commands to his twelve disciples, he went away from that place to teach and to preach in their towns.

my reflections
t h i n k : Sacrifices and penances are useless unless they are accompanied by a humble and contrite heart.

SABBATH

TO HATE ONE’S MOTHER AND FATHER?

Does Jesus really mean that we have to hate our mothers and fathers in order to be His disciples? I do not think so. Otherwise He would be directly contradicting His own teaching that we have to love one another and even our enemies. Therefore we need to look for a different understanding of these words. We can find one when we examine the context of this teaching.
Jesus is teaching us about the nature of discipleship and the absolute imperative in the life of a disciple to place his allegiance in Him before and above anything and everything else. That Jesus tells us we must hate our family members is a form of didactic emphasis only and not a literal command. However, if it should come to a battle of wills — should you follow the will of God or the will of your parents — then the will of God must prevail.
This understanding also provides us with an explanation concerning the division that faith in Christ may bring to families. If it is a matter of truth then we must side with God’s truth rather than the error of our family member. This will naturally bring division to the family. Hopefully, it will not be a division that endures but a  eparation for the sake of the Gospel, for the sake of truth. There will always come a time when we disagree with some of our friends over matters of morality or belief. We do not have the freedom to dictate the truth of morality or belief and thus such disagreements will always cause division. It is only the truth that can set us free and lead us to live fully.
The world often sets its path on ways that are contrary to the Gospel and the fruit of such choices is always suffering. I write this in the context of the financial meltdown of October 2008 where it became very clear that greed, not responsibility, has governed the world markets for the past 10 years.Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
Where do I stand when it comes to matters of doctrinal and moral truth? Do I side with the truth or do I tend to give in to the easy path?

Lord Jesus, grant me the strength of mind and character to always stand for the truth no matter how difficult or costly it may be.

St. Jason, pray for us.
