our ama zing brain

But we have the mind of Christ. – 1 Corinthians 2:16

I remember the first personal computer our family ever had. It was an Apple that had a RAM of 4 kilobytes. It ran on floppy disks that could hold 360 kilobytes of information. Let me put this in easier terms. At any one time, that computer could only hold information equivalent to two pages of typed, double-spaced text. That’s why it couldn’t even keep programs in its memory. We had to run a program from a 5 ¼ disk and replace it with a data disk when we had to save our file.
What a far cry from the computers we use today! Now we talk in terms of gigabytes (1 million kilobytes) and soon, in terabytes (1,000 gigabytes).
Now think of this: the human brain is estimated to have the storage capacity 500 to 1,000 terabytes! And that’s just for an ordinary, average person. We have not yet begun to explore the limits of our own mind.
Now meditate on this: We have the mind of Christ.
Mind-boggling, huh, but true. Believe it and use it! Rissa Singson-Kawpeng (justbreatherissa@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
We give credit to human wisdom when we should give credit to the divine guidance of God being exhibited through childlike people who were “foolish” enough to trust God’s wisdom and His supernatural equipment.

Lord, let me use the wisdom You give me as I live my life every day.

COMPANION

1st READING

To be a truly spiritual person one has to be open to the influence and guidance of the Holy Spirit. This means admitting that the wisdom of humanity is not enough to bring meaning to one’s life. The world cannot offer the same satisfaction that a life of faith offers. The world can only offer us death as an end whereas God offers us eternity with Him.

1 Corinthians 2:10b-16
10 Brothers and sisters: The Spirit scrutinizes everything, even the depths of God. 11 Among human beings, who knows what pertains to a person except the spirit of the person that is within? Similarly, no one knows what pertains to God except the Spirit of God. 12 We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit that is from God, so that we may understand the things freely given us by God. 13 And we speak about them not with words taught by human wisdom, but with words taught by the Spirit, describing spiritual realities in spiritual terms. 14 Now the natural person does not accept what pertains to the Spirit of God, for to him it is foolishness, and he cannot understand it, because it is judged spiritually. 15 The spiritual person, however, can judge everything but is not subject to judgment by anyone. 16 For “who has known the mind of the Lord, so as to counsel him?” But we have the mind of Christ.

P S A L M

Psalm 145:8-9, 10-11, 12-13ab, 13cd-14
R: The Lord is just in all his ways.
8 The LORD is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and of great kindness. 9 The LORD is good to all and compassionate toward all his works. (R) 10 Let all your works give you thanks, O LORD, and let your faithful ones bless you. 11 Let them discourse of the glory of your kingdom and speak of your might. (R) 12 Making known to men your might and the glorious splendor of your kingdom. 13 Your kingdom is a kingdom for all ages, and your dominion endures through all generations. (R) The LORD is faithful in all his words and holy in all his works. 14 The LORD lifts up all who are falling and raises up all who are bowed down. (R)

G O S P E L

The authority of Jesus amazed the people of His time, especially those who thought they were the ones that were supposed to have authority. And therein lies one of the paradoxes of the Gospel — God uses the small to shame those who think they are important. So often in the Gospels it is the underdog who wins out in the end. Let us remember that it is not whether we are big or powerful in this world that matters; rather it is whether or not we stand with God that will make the difference.

Luke 4:31-37
31 Jesus then went down to Capernaum, a town of Galilee. He taught them on the sabbath, 32 and they were astonished at his teaching because he spoke with authority. 33 In the synagogue there was a man with the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out in a loud voice, 34 “Ha! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are — the Holy One of God!” 35 Jesus rebuked him and said, “Be quiet! Come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down in front of them and came out of him without doing him any harm. 36 They were all amazed and said to one another, “What is there about his word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.” 37 And news of him spread everywhere in the surrounding region.

my reflections
t h i n k : To be a truly spiritual person, one has to be open to the influence and guidance of the Holy Spirit.

SABBATH

LIGHT AND DARKNESS

Early risers appreciate the morning — it’s a wonderful part of the day when dawn breaks forth and the first rays of the sun catch the tall trees glistening after the night moisture. If ever I am up at that time, I appreciate these times of God’s glory. We all know the power of the sun to illumine the day, the soft light of the moon at night. Scripture is flooded with these two images of darkness and light.
Light overshadows darkness and that is precisely what happens when Jesus the Son of God is in town. Even the demons shudder as they are exposed to the brilliant light of the Son. They scream and call out, knowing that their reign of darkness has been conquered by the light of Jesus’ coming. Jesus speaks in the power of light and acts in the light. All that comes to Him is exposed by the light of day.
The image of darkness and light is also within us. Anyone who sins lives in darkness. Anyone who seeks to follow the teachings of Jesus in obedience and faith will always have the light of life. We need to be constantly vigilant in prayer, sacraments, reading and spiritual direction in order to remain in the light. It is a good thing every day to examine our conscience and enhance our discernment between darkness and light — to see what spirit is operating at our lives, whether good or bad. We owe our lives to Jesus who has delivered us from the darkness of sin and transferred us to the Kingdom of light. Fr. Brian Steele, MGL

Reflection Question:
What are the areas of darkness in your life? Expose them to the Lord for healing and grace so that His light may overcome the darkness within you.

Lord, You are brilliant light to a world in darkness. You are the Son who has rays of mercy and love. Illumine and enlighten me with the power of Your Holy Spirit. May I always live as a child of the light. Amen.

St. Dominic del Val, pray for us.
