Feast of St. Bartholomew, Apostle
Bird Show

“… How do you know me?” – John 1:48

Every weekend, we go home to a place at the foot of Mount Makiling which is surrounded by a forestry reserve. Being a reserve, it has become a bird sanctuary where many species abound.
In the morning, we would watch them flocking in herds over ipil-ipil trees. We would watch small ones that look like humming birds as they hover and suck nectar out of the flowers in the garden. We would always stop by the roadside and be mesmerized by kingfishers perched on poles and trees.
What amazes me is when I see a flock of small herons fly in V-formation like it was being orchestrated by someone. Yes, there is Someone directing them and all these small creatures of beauty give us simple joy.
When you can enjoy the simple gifts that God has given us, then you know what God means when He says, “We are worth more than many sparrows.” And He says these words as He holds us in His hands, caressing us.
Life is wonderful when you feel God’s love around you. Donna España (donna@homeliving.com.ph)

REFLECTION:

COMPANION

1st READING

The heavenly Jerusalem in the vision of St. John is the Church enjoying the full delights of heaven. The apostles are the foundation stones of this Church. We are given the opportunity to believe because of their commitment to witnessing to the truth of the Gospel. And since we are the Church, we are the bride that the Lamb — Jesus — has married. We are now united to Him in a bond of love that can never be broken, in a union that will last for all eternity.

Revelation 21:9b-14
9 The angel spoke to me, saying, “Come here. I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.” 10 He took me in spirit to a great, high mountain and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God. 11 It gleamed with the splendor of God. Its radiance was like that of a precious stone, like jasper, clear as crystal. 12 It had a massive, high wall, with twelve gates where twelve angels were stationed and on which names were inscribed, [the names] of the twelve tribes of the Israelites. 13 There were three gates facing east, three north, three south, and three west. 14 The wall of the city had twelve courses of stones as its foundation, on which were inscribed the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

Psalm 145:10-11, 12-13, 17-18
R: Your friends make known, O Lord, the glorious splendor of your Kingdom.
10 Let all your works give you thanks, O LORD, and let your faithful ones bless you. 11 Let them discourse of the glory of your kingdom and speak of your might. (R) 12 Making known to men your might and the glorious splendor of your kingdom. 13 Your kingdom is a kingdom for all ages, and your dominion endures through all generations. (R) 17 The LORD is just in all his ways and holy in all his works. 18 The LORD is near to all who call upon him, to all who call upon him in truth. (R)

Bartholomew and Nathaniel were probably the same person. Jesus knows who Nathaniel is before He has met him. When He greets him He is really saying, “I know you.” Jesus says “I know you” to us also. He knows you completely. And He loves what He sees. Jesus calls you by name and, like Nathaniel, He calls you to be His disciple, to follow Him wherever He may lead.

John 1:45-51
45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one about whom Moses wrote in the law, and also the prophets, Jesus, son of Joseph, from Nazareth.” 46 But Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” 47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Here is a true Israelite. There is no duplicity in him.” 48 Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree.” 49 Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel.” 50 Jesus answered and said to him, “Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this.” 51 And he said to him, “Amen, amen, I say to you, you will see the sky opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

my reflections think:
Jesus calls you by name and, like Nathaniel, He calls you to be His disciple, to follow Him wherever He may lead.                                                                                                                                                                    & nbsp;

SABBATH

JESUS CALLS YOU!

The Church honors the life of St. Bartholomew, known in Scripture as Nathaniel. The evangelist Philip brings him to Jesus. Nathaniel is under the fig tree, perhaps resting and reading under the shade. His response is typical of the Jews of his time — “Can anything good come out of Galilee?” Jesus affirms his Jewishness and Nathaniel, in faith, affirms Jesus as the King of Israel.
The narrative we have in the Gospel is typically a call narrative — a call or invitation to come and follow. There is a response on the part of the one called, usually a doubt, concern or rejection. There is a response and finally acceptance of the call. In this simple narrative, Philip seeks out Nathaniel and calls him. The response of Nathaniel seems derogatory and offensive. Philip makes the response valid, inviting Nathaniel to come and see. Then there is an acceptance on the part of Nathaniel, who makes the amazing acclamation of faith. Finally, on the part of Jesus there is a mission statement. Legend has it that Bartholomew was skinned alive.
Jesus will call us in normal everyday circumstances. Not many of us receive our call in a spectacular lightshow. Notice that Bartholomew was simply sitting under the fig tree, a very normal everyday activity, like sitting, resting and reading. Sometimes, like Nathaniel, we doubt the love of God in our life, or even His ability to call us. The promise made to Nathaniel by Jesus is the same for us — we will see great things!
Let us be open to great things which God wants to reveal to us. He comes to us in the ordinary circumstances of life. We only need eyes to see and ears to listen to His call. Some think God only calls the religious or the holy ones. God’s call is for all and is irrevocable. He has a plan for every one of us. The life and call of Nathaniel proves this to us. It would be a wonderful thing for Jesus to tell us that there is no deception, no guile in us.Fr. Brian Steele, MGL

Reflection Question:
Have you found the Lord?

Lord, You know me and have called me by name. Thank You for calling me to follow You. Amen.

St. Ouen, pray for us.
