MOST UNLIKELY

“And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.” – Matthew 16:18

I believe you will agree with me when I say that Peter is the most unlikely to be bestowed the title “The Rock.” Wasn’t he an unlearned fisherman, impulsive and stubborn to boot?
To make matters worse, Peter thought himself to be better than the man he really was. He committed one of the most unthinkable sins a supposedly loyal and radical Apostle of Jesus could ever do — he denied Him three times and left Him to suffer and die. If it were up to me, Peter would be the last man I’d anoint as the “rock foundation” upon which to build the Church. But then it isn’t up to me but up to Jesus to make that choice.
Out of His perfect and unquestionable wisdom, it was this exasperating, imperfect and weakling of a man that Christ chose to become our Church’s first Pope. No matter how mind-boggling this truth is, it gives me much hope that in spite of my wretchedness, imperfection and sinfulness, Jesus can and will use me to do good, noble and even great works for His glory.
Take heart — He will use you for His glory, too!Dina Pecaña (dpecana@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
“In God’s great economy, nothing goes to waste… don’t be afraid of your flaws. Acknowledge them and allow God to take advantage of them, and you too can be the cause of beauty in his pathway. Go boldly, knowing that in our weakness we find strength…” Anonymous

Lord, what I give, please take and what you take, please break. And what you break, please use – use it for Your glory alone.

COMPANION

1st READING

The Law of God is a law of mercy and love. We should never be afraid to embrace it. It is all about His love for us and only secondarily about our love and response to Him. Let us keep the focus on the Lord and not on ourselves or the world. No matter what the temptation may be, the answer is to fix our eyes on Jesus and seek His love for us.

Jeremiah 31:31-34
31 The days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. 32 It will not be like the covenant I made with their fathers the day I took them by the hand to lead them forth from the land of Egypt; for they broke my covenant and I had to show myself their master, says the LORD. 33 But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD. I will place my law within them, and write it upon their hearts; I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34 No longer will they have need to teach their friends and kinsmen how to know the LORD. All, from least to greatest, shall know me, says the LORD, for I will forgive their evildoing and remember their sin no more.

Psalm 51:12-13, 14-15, 18-19
R: Create a clean heart in me, O God.
10 [12] A clean heart create for me, O God, and a steadfast spirit renew within me. 11 [13] Cast me not out from your presence, and your Holy Spirit take not from me. (R) 12 [14] Give me back the joy of your salvation, and a willing spirit sustain in me. 13 [15] I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners shall return to you. (R) 16 [18] For you are not pleased with sacrifices; should I offer a burnt offering, you would not accept it. 17 [19] My sacrifice, O God, is a contrite spirit; a heart contrite and humbled, O God, you will not spurn. (R)

As we remember today the dedication of the Basilica of Mary Major in Rome, one of the four main basilicas in Rome, we remember the Mother of Jesus and honor her for her response to God’s call. I hate to think of what would have been without her “yes.” What matters today is your and my “yes,” not so much for the sake of the Church, but for our sake and our salvation. Each one of us must decide for or against following the Lord.

Matthew 16:13-23
13 Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi. He asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter said in reply, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” 17 Jesus said to him in reply, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. 18 And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. 19 I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” 20 Then he strictly ordered his disciples to tell no one that he was the Messiah. 21 From that time on, Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer greatly from the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised. 22 Then Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, “God forbid, Lord! No such thing shall ever happen to you.” 23 He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle to me. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.”

my reflections
think: What matters today is your and my “yes,” not so much for the sake of the Church, but for our sake and our salvation.

SABBATH

A NEW COVENANT

God is into the covenant business. In the Old Testament, we hear of many covenants established by God. The “Covenant Formula,” “I will be your God and you will be my people,” is a constant theme recurring throughout the Old Testament.
We begin with Noah, who is to build an ark. The people are to be saved because God is about to wipe many from the face of the earth. God establishes the covenant with Noah never to destroy all earthly life again.
Abraham is to look at the stars in the sky and count their number. God will grant to him descendents as many as the stars in the sky. He covenants himself to Abraham by sparing the life of Isaac, his son.
Moses goes up to Mount Sinai to receive the Commandments. God establishes a covenant determined by regulations to be observed by the people in order to receive blessings of life and provision from God. He will protect and guard His own as they live to serve Him and His purposes. A few centuries on, David, the father of Solomon, was appointed King of Israel because of his love and devotion to God, the true King. God establishes a covenant of faithfulness with this servant King.
Finally, a new covenant is established between God and his people through Jesus, the only Son of God. Throughout biblical history, God’s faithfulness meets with the unfaithfulness of people. Covenants are established and broken. However, the new covenant established by the blood of Christ is the everlasting one, so unlike the ones of old. God writes it upon the hearts of people — a law within. The Spirit of God lives within the heart of one who believes.
This covenantal love is renewed in every Mass. As the priest takes the chalice to consecrate the blood of Christ, he re-establishes the covenant that has no end, sealed with the blood of Christ and made effective through the power of the Spirit.Fr. Brian Steele, MGL

Reflection Question:
Renew your love and faith in the Lord today in the Sacrament of the Eucharist.

I thank You, Lord, that You are my God and You claim me as Your own. Let Your love be written upon my heart. I open myself to Your Spirit who helps me live out this covenant in truth and love. Amen.

St. Afra, pray for us.
