hole in the wall

“For many, I tell you, will attempt to enter but will not be strong enough.” – Luke 13:24

It’s a silly Japanese game show that sent me rolling with laughter. Now, the Philippines has its own version entitled Hole in the Wall. The object of the game is to pass through an approaching wall that has odd-shaped holes. Contestants have to contort their bodies or balance themselves in almost inconceivable positions so they can pass through the moving wall without being pushed into the water.
It’s an entertaining game that reminds me of our Gospel today. Jesus tells us, “Try to come in through the narrow door.” In my life, I’ve experienced all sorts of narrow doors as I sought to follow Jesus. There were times when the approaching challenge seemed as impossible for me to get through as the silly shapes in the game show above.
But there was one thing I discovered: As long as my heart was disposed to obey the Lord, the impossible became possible and I’d be able to miraculously make it through my dead-end.
You know what’s even better? I also discovered that only the door was narrow. Because as soon as I made it through, the riches of God’s kingdom opened up before me.RissaSingson-Kawpeng (justbreatherissa@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
What narrow door is Jesus asking you to enter through?

Lord, I don’t want to be among the many who try but are unable to enter. Grant me the grace to enter through the narrow door of Your Kingdom.

COMPANION

1st READING

The Gospel of salvation is good news for all men and women. Many reject it when they hear it but it simply means that we who believe have to work a little harder to help them understand that the Gospel is for them as well as us. Isaiah prophesies that even the most unlikely of people will be made priests and Levites. We should expect the unexpected when we know we are dealing with God.

Isaiah 66:18-21
18 Thus says the LORD: I know their works and their thoughts, and I come to gather nations of every language; they shall come and see my glory. 19 I will set a sign among them; from them I will send fugitives to the nations to Tarshish, Put and Lud, Mosoch, Tubal and Javan, to the distant coastlands that have never heard of my fame, or seen my glory; and they shall proclaim my glory among the nations. 20 They shall bring all your brethren from all the nations as an offering to the LORD, on horses and in chariots, in carts, upon mules and dromedaries, to Jerusalem, my holy mountain, says the LORD, just as the Israelites bring their offering to the house of the LORD in clean vessels. 21 Some of these I will take as priests and Levites, says the LORD.

P S A L M

Psalm 117:1, 2
R: Go out to all the world and tell the Good News.
1 Praise the LORD, all you nations; glorify him, all you peoples! (R) 2 For steadfast is his kindness toward us, and the fidelity of the LORD endures forever. (R)

2nd READING

The author of the Letter to the Hebrews takes great consolation in the fact that God has called all men and women His sons and daughters. For Him this means that whatever we may be experiencing in life we can be sure that God is with us drawing us to Himself. This is true even when it seems to be impossible, such as in the midst of suffering. God can work all things for the good of those who love Him.

Hebrews 12:5-7, 11-13
5 Brothers and sisters, You have forgotten the exhortation addressed to you as children: “My son, do not disdain the discipline of the Lord or lose heart when reproved by him; 6 for whom the Lord loves, he disciplines; he scourges every son he acknowledges.” 7 Endure your trials as “discipline”; God treats you as sons. For what “son” is there whom his father does not discipline? 11 At the time, all discipline seems a cause not for joy but for pain, yet later it brings the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who are trained by it. 12 So strengthen your drooping hands and your weak knees. 13 Make straight paths for your feet, that what is lame may not be dislocated but healed.

G O S P E L

There are a multitude of options for our lives when it comes to the decisions we have to make. However, many, and Jesus seems to be saying here, of them will not lead us to God. We must be willing to reflect upon the choices we make to ensure that what we decide to do leads us to God and not away from Him. This is what the saints refer to as the effort we need to expend to stay faithful to God.

Luke 13:22-30
22 Jesus passed through towns and villages, teaching as he went and making his way to Jerusalem. 23 Someone asked him, “Lord, will only a few people be saved?” He answered them, 24 “Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I tell you, will attempt to enter but will not be strong enough. 25 After the master of the house has arisen and locked the door, then will you stand outside knocking and saying, ‘Lord, open the door for us.’ He will say to you in reply, ‘I do not know where you are from.’ 26 And you will say, ‘We ate and drank in your company and you taught in our streets.’ 27 Then he will say to you, ‘I do not know where [you] are from. Depart from me, all you evildoers!’ 28 And there will be wailing and grinding of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God and you yourselves cast out. 29 And people will come from the east and the west and from the north and the south and will recline at table in the kingdom of God. 30 For behold, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.”

SABBATH

THE NARROW GATE

Have you ever been locked out? It is a very frustrating thing to be locked out of your car, house, etc. It causes worry, anxiety and just one of those annoying situations we find ourselves in. Jesus is using the analogy of the Master not allowing admission into the house. The house has been locked because it’s too late. No matter what excuse is made, the Master will not open the door. We are always called to be vigilant in our journey of faith in the Lord.
There are many themes throughout Scripture. A common theme of universality flows through this Gospel. God welcomes all into His Kingdom, into His arms of mercy. He invites Jews and Gentiles, sinners and saints. He is a universal God. Those to whom the call was intended have the choice to receive or reject the invitation given them. Why then is the question asked — will only a few enter the Kingdom? Perhaps many are following Jesus but few are truly committed to His way of life and teachings. So many want the glory but are not ready to take up the challenges to achieve such blessing.
The Gospel of Luke reveals to us a God who includes all in His loving embrace. No one is excluded. We must be aware of our need for the grace to continue on the path of life. Often we may fall but we must never give up. Nor must we ever take for granted the faith we have. God, who has blessed us abundantly, expects much from us.
Jesus tells us to enter by the narrow gate. The gate to eternal life is narrow and many do not find it, nor are they willing to enter a gate that seems so narrow. The gate that leads to destruction is wide and is attracting many into its lure. Let us be led by the Spirit to enter the gate that leads to life eternal. Fr. Brian Steele, MGL

Reflection Question:
What must I do to enter the narrow gate?

Lord, keep me vigilant in my heart and mind. Open to me the gate of holiness that I may enter. Amen.

St. John Wall, pray for us.
