WORRYWART

“He said to them, “Because of your little faith....’” – Matthew 17:20

I tend to worry a lot. Especially when it comes to finances. There are months when I would secretly cry my eyes out, feeling helpless and clueless as to where to get the money to pay my bills and other obligations. “Why is it always like this?” I would ask the Lord in tearful prayer. Yet, a solution always comes my way.
“Photo finish na naman si Lord” (The Lord came through almost too late again), I once told a good friend of mine. He replied, “No, He’s always on time.” These words knocked me hard on the head, and I almost heard Jesus telling me, “You, woman of little faith!”
In today’s Gospel, the disciples couldn’t drive the demons out because, according to Jesus, they had so little faith. The same message still applies to us today. We each struggle with our own demons that sometimes come in the form of adversities that weaken our faith. Mine is called worry. But the Lord asks us to simply believe that He can and will make everything all right. He is, after all, our Savior.
Are you a worrywart, too? Take a breather. The Lord’s got you covered.Nova Arias (nova.svp@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
“Be still and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10)

Lord, when worry starts to consume me, teach me to be still and to trust in You.

COMPANION

1st READING

What is your vision for your life? Is it the same as God’s vision for your life? If it is not, then you have some surrendering to do. Negotiation is not going to get you very far, and why would you want to negotiate anyway? God knows what is best for your life. Are you willing to trust Him with it?

Habakkuk 1:12 – 2:4
12 Are you not from eternity, O LORD, my holy God, immortal? O LORD you have marked him for judgment, O Rock, you have readied him for punishment! 13 Too pure are your eyes to look upon evil, and the sight of misery you cannot endure. Why, then, do you gaze on the faithless in silence while the wicked man devours one more just than himself? 14 You have made man like the fish of the sea, like creeping things without a ruler. 15 He brings them all up with his hook, he hauls them away with his net, he gathers them in his seine; and so he rejoices and exults. 16 Therefore he sacrifices to his net, and burns incense to his seine; for thanks to them his portion is generous, and his repast sumptuous. 17 Shall he, then, keep on brandishing his sword to slay peoples without mercy? 2: 1 I will stand at my guard post, and station myself upon the rampart, and keep watch to see what he will say to me, and what answer he will give to my  complaint. 2 Then the LORD answered me and said: Write down the vision clearly upon the tablets, so that one can read it readily. 3 For the vision still has its time, presses on to fulfillment, and will not disappoint; if it delays, wait for it, it will surely come, it will not be late. 4 The rash man has no integrity; but the just man, because of his faith, shall live.

P S A L M
Psalm 9:8-9, 10-11, 12-13
R: You forsake not those who seek you, O Lord.
7 [8] The LORD sits enthroned forever; he has set up his throne for judgment. 8 [9] He judges the world with justice; he governs the peoples with equity. (R) 9 [10] The LORD is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of distress. 10 [11] They trust in you who cherish your name, for you forsake not those who seek you, O LORD. (R) 11 [12] Sing praise to the LORD enthroned in Zion; proclaim among the nations his deeds; 12 [13] for the avenger of blood has remembered; he has not forgotten the cry of the poor. (R)

G O S P E L

The disciples of Jesus were already performing miracles during the ministry of Jesus. This time they come up against a devil they cannot drive out. Jesus tells them that fasting and prayer is necessary in this case. How committed are we to the ministry of the Gospel? Are we willing to carry it on with fasting and prayer?

Matthew 17:14-20
14 A man came up to Jesus, knelt down before him, 15 and said, “Lord, have pity on my son, for he is a lunatic and suffers severely; often he falls into fire, and often into water. 16 I brought him to your disciples, but they could not cure him.” 17 Jesus said in reply, “O faithless and perverse generation, how long will I be with you? How long will I endure you? Bring him here to me.” 18 Jesus rebuked him and the demon came out of him, and from that hour the boy was cured. 19 Then the disciples approached Jesus in private and said, “Why could we not drive it out?” 20 He said to them, “Because of your little faith. Amen, I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”
1 Maccabees 15-16
my reflections
think: God knows what is best for your life. Are you willing to trust Him with it?

SABBATH

WHY, LORD?

It is common for us to ask, “Why, Lord?” Why do good men suffer? Why does evil prevail? Why do you gaze on the faithless in silence?
Habakkuk finds it difficult to understand the ways of the Lord. He sees trouble all around as the Babylonians take Israel by storm. Corruption, unfaithfulness and injustice are the name of the game. Political powers impose themselves and the wealthy take over the ownership of land and property.
Habakkuk is a prophet in Judah, a contemporary of Jeremiah. The exile is imminent. In fact, it will be a number of years before the fulfillment of the prophecy of Habakkuk will take place. Habakkuk is to wait upon the Lord God who achieves His victory.
In the meantime, Habakkuk reminds God: Are You not eternal? Are Your eyes not pure? Are You not immo r t a l ? Wh y, Lord, do You not do something about this mess? Do they sound familiar? How often have we made our complaints to the Lord in similar fashion? However, God always has the final say. He is the Victor, the Protector of the people of Judah. He provides a way out of their misery and reminds them of His guidance and love. God says that the just man, because of His faith, shall live. We must wait upon the Lord. Even if the response of the Lord seems delayed, the response of the Lord is not hastened by human intervention. It is the same throughout the Bible. Whatever seems disastrous, defeated, hopeless and life-threatening, God always wins in the end. For He is God and there is no other.
The heart of man is devious. It is the wickedness of sin, the selfishness of man, that causes these traumatic experiences — not God. We are quick to blame God for the wrong in our lives when we forget that often, it is we who have gotten ourselves in this predicament. God is never to be blamed. We can only blame ourselves for not being faithful to Him and His commands.Fr. Brian Steele, MGL

Reflection Question:
What are our complaints to the Lord at this time? What are our concerns and anxieties? Take some time today to express them before the Lord.

Nothing is impossible for You, Lord. Help me to trust in You. You are my stronghold in times of distress. Amen.

St. Claudia, pray for us.
