Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord

LIFE’S FACEBOOK

“While he was praying his face changed in appearance…” – Luke 9: 29

One morning, my wife Lallaine showed me her Facebook home page. I was astonished (and amused) at the different old pictures her friends have posted for all to see.
“The changes we have all gone through!” she exclaimed. And because I know a number of those friends, I knew what she meant. Most of them sported the “siete look” (a type of hairstyle) in their grade school photos, had baby fat and the usual ‘80s getup. Come high school, their hair metamorphosed to the afro as tall as a two-storey building, with the punk look. It gave us such joy seeing what time, money and a little maturity can do. Can you imagine the joy the disciples of Jesus felt when they were given a chance to have a glimpse of the glorified Jesus? They were ecstatic at the sight of Him transfigured right before their eyes.
What they saw is what we will see in the future.
For now, we have a foretaste of that in the Eucharist.
We are given the great privilege to see Jesus as bread and wine not just for us to have a glimpse of Him but more so to experience Him in our lives.Arun Gogna (gognaa1@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
Do I have a true encounter with Jesus in the Eucharist?

Help me see You as I ought to, Lord. AsI remember Yourtransfiguration, may I change, too, to be a better follower of Yours. Amen.

COMPANION

1st READING

Jesus Christ is the Eternal King whose sovereignty shall never pass away. We are called to be servants of this King. This is not slavery or domination. It is a service of love. A true servant loves the one he serves. To be in the service of the King is the sweet freedom of caring for the one we love the most. This needs to become true for our relationships with both God and our neighbor.

Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14
9 As I watched: Thrones were set up and the Ancient One took his throne. His clothing was snow bright, and the hair on his head as white as wool; His throne was flames of fire, with wheels of burning fire. 10 A surging stream of fire flowed out from where he sat; Thousands upon thousands were ministering to him, and myriads upon myriads attended him. The court was convened, and the books were opened. 13 As the visions during the night continued, I saw One like a son of man coming, on the clouds of heaven; When he reached the Ancient One and was presented before him, 14 He received dominion, glory, and kingship; nations and peoples of every language serve him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that shall not be taken away, his kingship shall not be destroyed.

P S A L M

Psalm 97:1-2, 5-6, 9
R: The Lord is king, the Most High over all the earth.
1 The LORD is king; let the earth rejoice; let the many islands be glad. 2 Clouds and darkness are round about him, justice and judgment are the foundation of his throne. (R) 5 The mountains melt like wax before the LORD, before the Lord of all the earth. 6 The heavens proclaim his justice, and all peoples see his glory. (R) 9 Because you, O LORD, are the Most High over all the earth, exalted far above all gods. (R)

2nd READING

The Transfiguration of Jesus gave the disciples who witnessed it an incredible insight into Jesus’ relationship with the Father. They knew that Jesus called God His Father; what they now discovered was that God called Jesus His beloved Son. We can also call God our Father. Indeed Jesus taught us to do so in the prayer He left us. But did you know that God also calls you His beloved son or daughter? You are the beloved of the Father.

2 Peter 1:16-19
16 Beloved: We did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17 For he received honor and glory from God the Father when that unique declaration came to him from the majestic glory, “This is my Son, my beloved, with whom I am well pleased.” 18 We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven while we were with him on the holy mountain. 19 Moreover, we possess the prophetic message that is altogether reliable. You will do well to be attentive to it, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.

G O S P E L

The Transfiguration is a wonderful anticipation of the glorious resurrection of Jesus. It should fill us with hope and excitement as we reflect upon the great victory of Jesus as He defeats the power of sin and death. However, Luke also tells us that Jesus speaks with Moses and Elijah about His “departure” or “passing.” They are speaking about Jesus’ death. Luke is telling us that the Cross is just as much a part of the Christian life as the Resurrection. We will share Jesus’ suffering as well as His victory over sin and death.

Luke 9:28b-36
28 Jesus took Peter, John, and James and went up the mountain to pray. 29 While he was praying his face changed in appearance and his clothing became dazzling white. 30 And behold, two men were conversing with him, Moses and Elijah, 31 who appeared in glory and spoke of his exodus that he was going to accomplish in Jerusalem. 32 Peter and his companions had been overcome by sleep, but becoming fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. 33 As they were about to part from him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good that we are here; let us make three tents, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” But he did not know what he was saying. 34 While he was still speaking, a cloud came and cast a shadow over them, and they became frightened when they entered the cloud. 35 Then from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is my chosen Son; listen to him.” 36 After the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. They fell silent and did not at that time tell anyone what they had seen.

my reflections
think: You are the beloved of the Father.

SABBATH

LISTEN TO HIM

In any given day, we listen to so many voices. From the moment we awake to the time we rest in the evening, we are inundated by voices. However, the voice of Jesus is the one we must obey and listen to.
In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus is praying, listening to the voice of the Father. He is in communion with the Father as He goes on His journey to Jerusalem where He will suffer and die. As He prays, Luke tells us, His face changes. Remember when Moses spoke with God on the mountain? His face changed. As we listen to the voice of the Lord, our face changes. We are renewed, affirmed and given the grace necessary to sustain us in our own faith journeys. Mary, too, at the wedding feast in Cana, gave these words of wisdom to the servants: “Do whatever He tells you.” Yes, we must listen to Him.
The account of the Transfiguration, the Feast we celebrate today, is wonderful. As Peter himself says, “It is wonderful to be here.” Jesus, Moses and Elijah are speaking with one another and in the midst of this conversation, Peter, James and John are listening. They (Elijah, Moses and Jesus) were discussing about the passing over that Jesus would soon accomplish. So in this story, there is listening and speaking.
The apostles who accompany Jesus are given a direct command from the voice coming from the cloud: “This is my chosen Son, listen to Him.” This is of utmost importance because, as they make their way down the mountain, they will hear the voice of Jesus preparing them for what is to come. They may not listen to what is explained to them, but it will be for their own good if they obey and heed the words of Jesus. We, too, are to be servants who can say under the inspiration of Samuel, “Speak, Lord, Your servant is listening.” Every day we have an opportunity to listen to this voice. We must listen in order to live, for the words of the Lord are spirit and life. Let us listen to this voice today and follow Him wherever He goes.Fr. Brian Steele, MGL

Reflection Question:
To whose voice are you listening?

Lord, in the course of a day, I listen to many voices. Help me to listen to Your voice, the voice that speaks of peace, joy and love. Amen.

St. James the Syrian, pray for us.
