your job , your ministry

“… go to the sea, drop in a hook, and take the first fish that comes up. Open its mouth and you will find a coin worth twice the temple tax. Give that to them for me and for you.” – Matthew 17:27

Working for Shepherd’s Voice is one of the best things that’s happened to me. Imagine, I get to use the gifts God has given me, proclaim the Good News and make a living all at the same time. While I know this is a great blessing — to have your ministry and your work rolled into one — I also know that the many others who aren’t in ministry work like me are in no way less “blessed” in their jobs.
In fact, I believe that people in secular jobs are in a position to reach out to others in ways that preachers and ministry workers like me can’t.
And imagine, if everyone took the path of ministry service, who will run businesses, collect taxes, cure people in hospitals, enforce law in the land, etc?
Friends, we’ve all been equipped with particular gifts and calling with which we can serve the Lord and others. And just as Jesus used Peter’s livelihood — fishing — to pay for his mundane needs, including his taxes, so will the Lord use our respective jobs to bless not just ourselves but others as well. REFLECTION:
“No labor is servile when the Lord’s approval is the paramount consideration.” (Geoffrey B. Wilson)

Lord, as I do my work, help me to fulfill the calling You have placed on my life.

COMPANION

1st READING

The visions per se are merely one man’s attempt to describe the glory of God, an impossible task even at the best of times. The critical line is the last one, the response of the Prophet Ezekiel: he “fell upon his face, and he heard the voice of one speaking …”

Ezekiel 1:2-5, 24-28c
2 On the fifth day of the fourth month of the fifth year, that is, of King Jehoiachin’s exile, 3 the word of the LORD came to the priest Ezekiel, the son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by the river Chebar. — There the hand of the LORD came upon me. 4 As I looked, a storm-wind came from the North, a huge cloud with flashing fire enveloped in brightness, from the midst of which [the midst of the fire] something gleamed like electrum. 5 Within it were figures resembling four living creatures that looked like their form was human. 24 Then I heard the sound of their wings, like the roaring of mighty waters, like the voice of the Almighty. When they moved, the sound of the tumult was like the din of an army. And when they stood still, they lowered their wings. 25 26 Above the  firmament over their heads something like a throne could be seen, looking like sapphire. Upon it was seated, up above, one who had the appearance of a man. 27 Upward from what resembled his waist I saw what gleamed like electrum; downward from what resembled his waist I saw what looked like fire; he was surrounded with splendor. 28 Like the bow which appears in the clouds on a rainy day was the splendor that surrounded him. Such was the vision of the likeness of the glory of the LORD.

P S A L M
Psalm 148:1-2, 11-12, 13, 14
R: Heaven and earth are filled with your glory.
1 Praise the LORD from the heavens, praise him in the heights; 2 Praise him, all you his angels, praise him, all you his hosts. (R) 11 Let the kings of the earth and all peoples, the princes and all the judges of the earth, 12 young men too, and maidens, old men and boys. (R) 13 Praise the name of the LORD, for his name alone is exalted; his majesty is above earth and heaven. (R) 14 And he has lifted up the horn of his people. Be this his praise from all his faithful ones, from the children of Israel, the people close to him. Alleluia. (R)

G O S P E L

I do not think Jesus is interested in starting some sort of rebellion against the oppressive Roman rulers. This is the last thing that He desires. There are no real winners in wars; we are all losers because of the immensity of the tragic loss of life. What Jesus is interested in is starting a war against the sin in our hearts so that we will live righteous and holy lives.

Matthew 17:22-27 (or Luke 12:22-46)
22 As Jesus and his disciples were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is to be handed over to men, 23 and they will kill him, and he will be raised on the third day.” And they were overwhelmed with grief. 24 When they came to Capernaum, the collectors of the temple tax approached Peter and said, “Doesn’t your teacher pay the temple tax?” 25 “Yes,” he said. When he came into the house, before he had time to speak, Jesus asked him, “What is your opinion, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth take tolls or census tax? From their subjects or from foreigners?” 26 When he said, “From foreigners,” Jesus said to him, “Then the subjects are exempt. 27 But that we may not offend them, go to the sea, drop in a hook, and take the first fish that comes up. Open its mouth and you will find a coin worth twice the temple tax. Give that to them for me and for you.”

my reflections
think: What Jesus is interested in is starting a war against the sins in our hearts.

SABBATH

THE GLORY OF GOD

We may not completely see the glory of God as Ezekiel describes so magnificently, but there are many opportunities to glimpse the glory of God. When I see a beautiful sunset, a grandiose mountain, a calm and unending sea, a lush green rice field, a cool breeze, or a good meal, then I have tasted and seen something of the glory of God. If we observe very carefully our mundane activities, we will always catch a glimpse of His glory.
Ezekiel, a prophet in the year 6 BC, is given a glimpse of the glory of God. He is carried by the hand of the Lord and is given sight of the splendor of the King — Yahweh. While he is with his fellow exiles in Babylon, he receives his call to be a prophet. At a time of upheaval, God reveals himself in awe and majesty.
The vision is remarkable since for many years God is believed to be present only in the Temple. Here, God is revealing himself outside of the temple. He is not confined to our ways and understanding.
Many of us need to broaden our vision of God, too. As Isaiah says, God’s ways are not our ways and His thoughts not our thoughts. In the midst of struggle, pain and confusion, God is always there — we only need eyes to see. That is why it is a good discipline to practice the examinattion of conscience in order to discern the movement of God. As we practice this spiritual discipline, we learn to always see God, especially through the uncertain times in our lives.
P erhaps you (or others whom you know) are in the same dilemma that Ezekiel experiences. Perhaps you feel estranged from God and are seeking His face in a time of confusion and pain. Let the experience of Ezekiel encourage you to seek God. Look for Him —He is near. Wherever you are, you will see His glory. Ask God to reveal Himself to you — you will be surprised. Fr. Brian Steele, MGL

Reflection Question:
Can I trust and hope in God even when I am in exile — the exile of sin, separation, pain and confusion?

God of glory and majesty, reveal Yourself to me. Amen.

St. Nathy, pray for us.
