PROMISE, CROSS MY HEART

“One who swears by heaven swears by the throne of God and by him who is seated on it. “ – Matthew 23:22

“You won’t tell anyone?”
“I won’t.”
“Promise? Cross your heart?”
“Promise.”
When I was a kid, the word “promise” carried a big responsibility. Whenever I was made to promise something, I considered it a grave sin if I break it.
One of my friends told me once that a promise with the heart is different and more “breakable” than if it is a “promise to God.” The latter, since it’s made to God, is a sin to break. That sounded a little easier to swallow when it comes to making promises because that means I can break promises as long as I don’t promise it to God, right?
But what if God’s promises were on a conditional basis, too? What if He decided, “I know I promised this, but it’s not as heavy as the way I gave this other promise, so I’m breaking this one, OK? I hope you don’t mind.” How would I feel if He decided to go that way?
Thankfully, God is a loving God and He would never do that. Even when I am unfaithful, His love remains and His promises endure.Tina Matanguihan

REFLECTION:
Have you made any promises today?

Father, may I never forget Your faithfulness to Your promises as I remain faithful to mine.

COMPANION

1st READING

Paul encourages the community in Thessalonica with the promise that he always remembers them in his prayers. Hopefully we are all as faithful in praying for others and their struggles as Paul is. We are not alone in our Christian journey. We are all part of the Body of Christ and as such we should pray for one another. This makes enormous sense. If we all pray for one another, surely we can see how beneficial it is for all to have millions interceding for us rather than just one’s self  focused on and praying for one’s own problem.

2 Thessalonians 1:1-5, 11-12
1 Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy to the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: 2 grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3 We ought to thank God always for you, brothers, as is fitting, because your faith flourishes ever more, and the love of every one of you for one another grows ever greater. 4 Accordingly, we ourselves boast of you in the churches of God regarding your endurance and faith in all your persecutions and the afflictions you endure. 5 This is evidence of the just judgment of God, so that you may be considered worthy of the kingdom of God for which you are suffering. 11 We always pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling and powerfully bring to fulfillment every good purpose and every effort of faith, 12 that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, in accord with the grace of our God and Lord Jesus Christ.

Psalm 96:1-2a, 2b-3, 4-5
R: Proclaim God’s marvelous deeds to all the nations.
1 Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all you lands. 2 Sing to the LORD; bless his name. (R) Announce his salvation, day after day. 3 Tell his glory among the nations; among all peoples, his wondrous deeds. (R) 4 For great is the LORD and highly to be praised; awesome is he, beyond all gods. 5 For all the gods of the nations are things of nought, but the LORD made the heavens. (R)

A killjoy is one who not only refuses to do the right thing himself, but also works against allowing others the freedom to choose the right thing. The judgment against those who hinder others from doing good will be great. We need to ensure that the choices we make respect the rights of others to choose and determine their own paths. It is never for us to deprive another of their free will.

Matthew 23:13-22
13 Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You lock the kingdom of heaven before human beings. You do not enter yourselves, nor do you allow entrance to those trying to enter . [14] 14 15 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You traverse sea and land to make one convert, and when that happens you make him a child of Gehenna twice as much as yourselves. 16 “Woe to you, blind guides, who say, ‘If one swears by the temple, it means nothing, but if one swears by the gold of the temple, one is obligated.’ 17 Blind fools, which is greater, the gold, or the temple that made the gold sacred? 18 And you say, ‘If one swears by the altar, it means nothing, but if one swears by the gift on the altar, one is obligated.’ 19 You blind ones, which is greater, the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred? 20 One who swears by the altar swears by it and all that is upon it; 21 one who swears by the temple swears by it and by him who dwells in it; 22 one who swears by heaven swears by the throne of God and by him who is seated on it.”

my reflections
t h i n k : We are all part of the Body of Christ and as such we should pray for one another.

SABBATH

WOE TO THE PHARISEE!

I do not think I would have liked to have been a Pharisee during Jesus’ time. Jesus is reprimanding and saying some very challenging words to the Pharisees. The Pharisees were a religious group in the time of Jesus, among many others. They were strict in rules and regulations and declared themselves faithful followers of the Law of Moses, the Torah (first five books of the Bible). Yet the problem is that they were too legalistic and strict in living out these rules. Here we see Jesus challenging them for their seemingly outward piety yet legalistic hearts.
Matthew records seven woes given by Jesus to the Pharisees. They make it hard for people to enter the Kingdom of God because of their strict guidelines in adhering to the Law of Moses. They were very zealous in their evangelistic efforts, yet, horrendous to their converts. Jesus challenges their hypocrisy, envy, rigidity and formality.
I guess we can be all prone to “Phariseeism” at one stage or another. All of us want to be seen as pious, saying the right prayers and looking good before men, but God knows the heart. Religion is not about legalism and looking holy. It is a way of life and learning to follow the rule of Jesus, empowered by the Spirit of love in holiness and justice.
Devotional prayers that have come to us in tradition can help us in our relationship with the Lord. These so-called devotional prayers are beautiful, wonderful words and aspirations, but many of us are prone to say and not pray them. The problem we often have is that we become distracted “saying” our prayers. That is a contradiction. Prayers are for praying.
Let us remove the Pharisee from our heart and nurture a heartfelt relationship with the Lord. God wants a heart devoted to Him. Therefore, as we surrender our hearts, our minds begin to follow. I heard once that the longest distance is from the mind to the heart. Fr. Brian Steele, MGL

Reflection Question:
Are you a Pharisee? Does your faith and prayer life seem Pharisee-oriented?

Lord, teach me to pray and not just to say my prayers. Amen.

St. Ebba, pray for us.
