Boils and Cloaks

“Why cry out over your wound? Your pain is without relief. Because of your great guilt…” – Jeremiah 30:15

For three months, my wife and I suffered from recurring boils. Yes, it was one of the highlights of the Egyptian plagues. At any given time, we would have three to six swellings on our skin that made it painful to walk and move. It was further complicated by two swelling toe nails — one of which was surgically removed plus a sudden attack of gastritis on my wife in the middle of the night.
Yes, you can say we lived Jeremiah 30:12-15 and it did occur to us to ask, “What sins have we done?” and the classic, “Why, Lord?”
If you’re ever in a situation like what we experienced, it’s reassuring to read that today’s Gospel involved the healing of sickness (Matthew 14:35-36).
After attending Mass during this ordeal, I stood in line in front of the image of the crucified Christ — among those who wanted to touch Him.
Staring ahead at Jesus’ scars and the people flocking to Him, I finally understood the power of faith and healing. Our own scars make Jesus’ scars more real to us.Jomar Hilario (jomar.hilario@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
People brought to him all those who were sick and and begged him that they might touch only the tassel on his cloak and as many as touched it were healed. (Matthew 14:35-36)

What have I done to have faith like that?

COMPANION

1st READING

Even when the situation is hopeless and there seems to be no solution, with God there is always a way through to victory. Do you believe this? I do, because I have seen it happen a number of times in my life. God has chosen to smoothen the path for His will in my life. He has moved mountains so that I can be where I am today. I pray that I respond to His generosity with some of my own.

Jeremiah 30:1-2, 12-15, 18-22
1 The following message came to Jeremiah from the LORD. 2 For thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Write all the words I have spoken to you in a book. 12 For thus says the LORD: Incurable is your wound, grievous your bruise; 13 there is none to plead your cause, no remedy for your running sore, no healing for you. 14 All your lovers have forgotten you, they do not seek you. I struck you as an enemy would strike, punished you cruelly; 15 why cry out over your wound? Your pain is without relief. Because of your great guilt, your numerous sins, I have done this to you. 18 Thus says the LORD: See! I will restore the tents of Jacob, his dwellings I will pity; city shall be rebuilt upon hill, and palace restored as it was. 19 From them will resound songs of praise, the laughter of happy men. I will make them not few, but many; they will not be tiny, for I will glorify them. 20 His sons shall be as of old, his assembly before me shall stand firm; I will punish all his oppressors. 21 His leader shall be one of his own, and his rulers shall come from his kin. When I summon him, he shall approach me; how else should one take the deadly risk of approaching me? says the LORD. 22 You shall be my people, and I will be your God.

Psalm 102:16-18, 19-21, 29, 22-23
R: The Lord will build up Zion again, and appear in all his glory.
15 [16] The nations shall revere your name, O LORD, and all the kings of the earth your glory, 16 [17] when the LORD has rebuilt Zion and appeared in his glory; 17 [18] when he has regarded the prayer of the destitute, and not despised their prayer. (R) 18 [19] Let this be written for the generation to come, and let his future creatures praise the LORD: 19 [20] “The LORD looked down from his holy height, from heaven he beheld the earth, 20 [21] To hear the groaning of the prisoners, to release those doomed to die.” (R) 28 [29] The children of your servants shall abide, and their posterity shall continue in your presence, 21 [22] That the name of the LORD may be declared in Zion; and his praise, in Jerusalem, 22 [23] When the peoples gather together, and the kingdoms, to serve the LORD. Whether Jesus is performing miracles or simply teaching the people about the Kingdom of God, the crowds are drawn to Him. We have to ask ourselves why this is so in order to understand something about the nature of the Gospel. What I am alluding to here is the natural drawing power of the truth. Whether in word or action, truth has a power and beauty that attract people to it — not all people, but a lot of people. We need to believe and trust that as we live and share the Gospel with others, people will be naturally attracted to what we say and do simply because it is the truth.

Matthew 14:22-36 (or Matthew 15:1-2, 10-14)
22 Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and precede him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. 23 After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When it was evening he was there alone. 24 Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it. 25 During the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them, walking on the sea. 26 When the disciples  saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. “It is a ghost,” they said, and they cried out in fear. 27 At once Jesus spoke to them, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” 28 Peter said to him in reply, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” 29 He said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw how strong the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” 31 Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” 32 After they got into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying, “Truly, you are the Son of God.” 34 After making the crossing, they came to land at Gennesaret. 35 When the men of that place recognized him, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought to him all those who were sick 36 and begged him that they might touch only the tassel on his cloak, and as many as touched it were healed.

my reflections
t h i n k : Truth has a power and beauty that attract people to it.

SABBATH

Take Courage !

Occasionally, you come to read a Gospel that strikes a chord within you. For me it is the text of today’s Gospel. It would have to be one of my favorite texts in the Gospels — full of adventure, suspense, terror, misunderstanding, fear and success.
It is the evening after the crowds have just been fed. Jesus has told his disciples to cross to the other side and He will meet them there.
The sea is a frightening place in Jewish culture. It is the place where the demons seek to live and rage. The waters were the primitive places of the dead. So when Jesus walks across the lake, they are afraid because they think He is a ghost. Notice that Jesus sees the disciples’ fear. He speaks to them, “Do not be afraid.” Peter speaks up to confirm that it truly is the Lord. He puts himself to the test — to approach Jesus on the waters. All is going well until Peter recognizes something strange — he gets distracted, looks at the water beneath his feet and begins to sink. Notice that as he was beginning to sink, Jesus caught hold of him before he sank. Peter is courageous; he takes the risk of faith by coming to Jesus. The other disciples are less than courageous. They do not want to leave their comfort zone.
The image I like in this Gospel is that of Jesus holding Peter by the hand. I have often tried to meditate on this scene. It is not an easy thing to pull someone out of water. Jesus would have to use all His strength to help Peter. This is a beautiful image of salvation for us. Jesus has given every effort to save us. His whole life was given to us, even to the point of death on the cross — what an effort from the One who has loved us, given His life for us and washed away our sins with His blood.Fr. Brian Steele, MGL

Reflection Question:
Think of the effort Jesus has made to save you from your sins. What will you give in return? How will you thank Him for His great effort?

Save me, Lord. Amen.

St. Peter Julian Eymard, pray for us.
