NOVEL WRITING

“For human beings this is impossible, but for God all things are possible.” – Matthew 19:26

Every November since 2004, I join an international novel writing challenge where all participants are to write a novel with a minimum of 50,000 words in a month. There’s no major prize except the fulfilment of writing a novel. It’s a daunting task especially for a newbie, and some people think it’s a crazy thing to do, especially with a lot of other things to do.
Needless to say, my first year in the novel writing challenge was a failure, mostly because I lost steam in the middle of the month, ending only with over 33,000 words. The next year, I decided to join again just to recover. But as the month neared, I felt an amazing sense of dread. Fifty thousand words is no joke! I could feel self-doubt attacking me before I even started.
I decided to include my novel writing in my prayer time and asked God to help me write His word into my story. With that prayer, I dove in and wrote. It still wasn’t easy, but a couple of days before the end of the month, I hit 50,000 words! Tina Matanguihan (tina.matanguihan@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
Task too daunting? It might need some kneeling before you start.

Lord, help me to trust in You.

COMPANION

1st READING

Pride is one of the major sins in question here. It is the pride and arrogance of the people in seeking to follow their own counsel and wisdom rather than God’s that is their downfall. The people have placed alliances with secular nations before faith in God and acquiring riches and wealth before righteousness and holy living. They are rightfully judged and condemned for this.

Ezekiel 28:1-10
1 The word of the LORD came to me: 2 Son of man, say to the prince of Tyre: Thus says the Lord GOD: Because you are haughty of heart, you say, “A god am I! I occupy a godly throne in the heart of the sea!” — And yet you are a man, and not a god, however you may think yourself like a god. 3 Oh yes, you are wiser than Daniel, there is no secret that is beyond you. 4 By your wisdom and your intelligence you have made riches for yourself; you have put gold and silver into your treasuries. 5 By your great wisdom applied to your trading you have heaped up your riches; your heart has grown haughty from your riches — 6 therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Because you have thought yourself to have the mind of a god, 7 therefore I will bring against you foreigners, the most barbarous of nations. They shall draw their swords against your beauteous wisdom, they shall run them through your splendid apparel. 8 They shall thrust you down to the pit, there to die a bloodied corpse, in the heart of the sea. 9 Will you then say, “I am a god!” when you face your murderers? No, you are a man, not a god, handed over to those who will slay you. 10 You shall die the death of the uncircumcised at the hands of foreigners, for I have spoken, says the Lord GOD.

Deuteronomy 32:26-27ab, 27cd-28, 30, 35cd-36ab
R: It is I who deal death and give life.
26 “I would have said, ‘I will make an end of them and blot out their name from men’s memories,’ 27 Had I not feared the insolence of their enemies, feared that these foes would mistakenly boast.” (R) “‘Our own hand won the victory; the LORD had nothing to do with it.’ ” 28 For they are a people devoid of reason, having no understanding. (R) 30 “How could one man rout a thousand, or two men put ten thousand to flight, Unless it was because their Rock sold them and the LORD delivered them up?” (R) 35 Close at hand is the day of their disaster and their doom is rushing upon them! 36 Surely, the LORD shall do justice for his people; on his servants he shall have pity. Distractions are death to the spiritual life, and one of the biggest sources of distractions here on earth is wealth. It is what causes us to focus on all that the world can offer, but to what avail? Can the world or anything in it offer eternal life? The Scriptures clearly witness to the fact that we will all die, even apart from logic, telling us that our bodies will eventually wear out.

Matthew 19:23-30
23 Jesus said to his disciples: “Amen, I say to you, it will be hard for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24 Again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” 25 When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and said, “Who then can be saved?” 26 Jesus looked at them and said, “For human beings this is impossible, but for God all things are possible.” 27 Then Peter said to him in reply, “We have given up everything and followed you. What will there be for us?” 28 Jesus said to them, “Amen, I say to you that you who have followed me, in the new age, when the Son of Man is seated on his throne of glory, will yourselves sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29 And everyone who has given up houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands for the sake of my name will receive a hundred times more, and will inherit eternal life. 30 But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.”
Job 10-13
my reflections
t h i n k : It is the pride and arrogance of the people in seeking to follow their own counsel and wisdom rather than God’s that is their downfall.

SABBATH

WHAT ABOUT US?

The “eye of a needle” was the phrase used to describe the entrance into the city. The gateways were very narrow that even a camel had to bend on its four legs in order to enter the city. Hence, Jesus used this figure of speech that it is easier for a camel to enter the needle’s eye than a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God. The response of Jesus comes after the rich young man departs from Jesus’ company, sad, because of his great wealth. Why then is it hard for the rich to enter? The answer lies in the sense of attachment that those with great wealth have. A great responsibility is upon the rich to share their resources and not be so possessive of them — all that they have is given by God in the first place.
Everything is possible with God. These very words are the same ones addressed to Mary at her Annunciation, by the angel. Mary was called to believe in the message of the angel; Joseph was called to trust in God’s ways; the disciples were called to follow Jesus, leaving everything behind. There is great joy in following Jesus, but not without cost and sacrifice. That is why Peter utters these very honest questions — questions that we, too, find ourselves asking the Lord: “What about us? Look, Lord, at what I have done for you. Lord, look at the price I have paid! What do I get out of all this?” And Jesus, in all His love and kindness, says you will be given more. The Lord provides.
It is true. The Lord provides for those who follow Him. He blesses us with friends and support from those on the same walk of faith. He blesses us with shelter, food and clothing. He blesses us with skills and abilities to work and to enjoy life. The Lord provides more than we can hope for and imagine, even everlasting life. Perhaps we need to ask Peter’s question to the Lord, “What about me?” And you will see what the Lord has done for you. As you begin to count your blessings, you will be astonished that God is loving and kind in all His ways. Trust in Him and lean not on your own understanding. Fr. Brian Steele, MGL

Reflection Question:
What has the Lord done for you in your life?

For all You have given me, Lord, I thank You. Help me, Lord, to acknowledge Your goodness and provision in my life. Amen.

St. Donatus, pray for us.
