BUILT TO LAST

“Our bones are dried up, our hope is lost, and we are cut off.” … Then you shall know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves and have you rise from them, O my people! – Ezekiel 37: 11, 13

Everything I learned in Entrepreneurship, I applied to our flagging business. I envisioned, strategized and bled our savings dry. I held on even if everyone, save my father, told me to give up. All this because I read Built to Last, a book about visionary companies. Its advice: Never give up no matter what. The book extolled 3M, saying, “It had such a poor start in life that its second president did not draw a salary for the first eleven years of his tenure.” Well, I thought I was better off. I got a pittance once in a while. And it’s only been eight years.
But the struggle became too much. I cried out to the Lord for relief. Finally, He gave us cause to move out. Now, I’m with a different business that looks very promising. My niece and I are also planning to resurrect the store online.
Business books say hold on and there’s a lot of wisdom in that. But the Good Book says our hope is in the Lord. He may give us victory over the odds and turn our business into a visionary company. Or He may give us a totally new and better life. Lella Santiago (mirellasantiago@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
God gives us the strength to hold on when times are rough. Or sometimes He gives us the wisdom to move on and start anew.

Lord, guide me in the ups and downs of my life.

COMPANION

1st READING

This is a very bizarre vision that Ezekiel reports. He tells us that God can raise life up from seemingly dead situations. This is an important vision as it affirms the ability of God to create anything He wants to from nothing. Our lives are nothing without His grace and action within them. It is imperative that we learn to surrender all to Him so He can give life to it and make it bear fruit for His Kingdom.

Ezekiel 37:1-14
1 The hand of the LORD came upon me, and he led me out in the spirit of the LORD and set me in the center of the plain, which was now filled with bones. 2 He made me walk among them in every direction so that I saw how many they were on the surface of the plain. How dry they were! 3 He asked me: Son of man, can these bones come to life? “Lord GOD,” I answered, “you alone know that.” 4 Then he said to me: Prophesy over these bones, and say to them: Dry bones, hear the word of the LORD! 5 Thus says the Lord GOD to these bones: See! I will bring spirit into you, that you may come to life. 6 I will put sinews upon you, make flesh grow over you, cover you with skin, and put spirit in you so that you may come to life and know that I am the LORD. 7 I prophesied as I had been told, and even as I was prophesying I heard a noise; it was a rattling as the bones came together, bone joining bone. 8 I saw the sinews and the flesh come upon them, and the skin cover them, but there was no spirit in them. 9 Then he said to me: Prophesy to the spirit, prophesy, son of man, and say to the spirit: Thus says the Lord GOD: From the four winds come, O spirit, and breathe into these slain that they may come to life. 10 I prophesied as he told me, and the spirit came into them; they came alive and stood upright, a vast army. 11 Then he said to me: Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They have been saying, “Our bones are dried up, our hope is lost, and we are cut off.” 12 Therefore, prophesy and say to them Thus says the Lord GOD O my people, I will open your graves and have you rise from them, and bring you back to the land of Israel. 13 Then you shall know that I am the LORD, when I open your graves and have you rise from them, O my people! 14 I will put my spirit in you that you may live, and I will settle you upon your land; thus you shall know that I am the LORD. I have promised, and I will do it, says the LORD.

P S A L M

Psalm 107:2-3, 4-5, 6-7, 8-9
R: Give thanks to the Lord; his love is everlasting.
2 Let the redeemed of the LORD say, those whom he has redeemed from the hand of the foe 3 and gathered from the lands, from the east and the west, from the north and the south. (R) 4 They went astray in the desert wilderness; the way to an inhabited city they did not find. 5 Hungry and thirsty, their life was wasting away within them. (R) 6 They cried to the LORD in their distress; from their straits he rescued them. 7 And he led them by a direct way to reach an inhabited city. (R) 8 Let them give thanks to the LORD for his mercy and his wondrous deeds to the children of men, 9 because he satisfied the longing soul and filled the hungry soul with good things. (R)

Bernard of Clairvaux produced probably what remains the definitive commentary on the Song of Songs. His insight into love and its true nature and power remain forever relevant, maybe especially so to a world and society that seems to have lost sight of the true essence of love. We need to reflect upon what Jesus has to say in the Gospel today about love being the foundation of everything human and seek to apply it to our lives.

Matthew 22:34-40
34 When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, 35 and one of them a scholar of the law tested him by asking, 36 “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” 37 He said to him, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. 38 This is the greatest and the first commandment. 39 The second is like it: You shall love your neighbour as yourself. 40 The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.”
Job 22-25

SABBATH

THE BREATH OF GOD

There are many metaphors that we can use to describe the person and action of the Holy Spirit — fire, wind, breath, water, dove, tongues. A dominant image of the Holy Spirit is that of breath. The ruah(Hebrew for breath) of God seems to be present at the dawning of day where His breath hovered over the surface of the deep and gave birth to creation (Genesis 1). God breathed into man and he became a living being. Jesus breathed on the disciples in the Upper Room and they received the Spirit.
Do you notice something about breath? Breath is vital for life. If you don’t breathe in air, you will die. We need to breathe in order to live. You can’t hold on to your breath forever. How long can you stay under water before you need to rise above it in order to breathe? Just as fish needs water to live and cars need gas to run, so do we need the breath of the Spirit to give us life. The breath of the Spirit enlivens us human beings.
The vision given to Ezekiel is extraordinary. He is shown a valley of bones and is asked to walk among it. They are too many to count. As Ezekiel speaks the word of life, according to the command of God, the dry bones become alive. Extraordinary! The vision is a prophecy for the people of Israel —they were once dry but were to be filled with the life-giving breath of God. They were dried up from years in exile in a foreign land. They were dried up in their faith in God and His promises. God sends them His life-giving breath and renews their lives.
The vision is good for us, too. Often we feel like dry bones. Perhaps our relationship with God has become bone-dry. Our prayer, faith and spiritual efforts are seemingly dead as bones on the field that Ezekiel saw. We need the life-giving Spirit to free us from death and give us life. Jesus says He has come to give life in abundance. What are we waiting for? Let us ask Him to breathe His Spirit into our dryness and experience the liberating and life-giving power of the Holy Spirit.Fr. Brian Steele, MGL

Reflection Question:
Have you asked the Holy Spirit to give you life today?

Breathe on me, O breath of God, and make my life anew. Amen.

St. Edbert, pray for us.
