CHILD’S PLAY

“Let the children come to me…” – Matthew 19:14

Many people have a twisted image of Jesus. They think that Jesus was a serious, authoritative, know-it-all, grumpy man who, when He speaks, could be likened to an angry 60-year-old.
If He was indeed like that, I don’t think children would flock to Him.
Children shy away from scary people.
Jesus, on the other hand, is a sweet, always-has-a-ready-smile kind of a person.
That was why children loved to run after Him. He was a person so fun to be with that when people were planning to kill Him, His disciples simply couldn’t believe it.
He is a healer who touched those who aren’t supposed to be touched.
He is a lover who reached out especially to the broken and unloved.
When you come to Him, think of Him as such.
And when you believe this in your heart, you will hear Him say, “Come.”Arun Gogna (gognaa1@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
What is my image of God? Does it allow me to approach Him or to shy away from Him?

Let me not shy away from You, Lord. Instead, draw me closer and closer to You.

COMPANION

1st READING

Israel has not just been unfaithful in her relationship with God but has also acted immorally within. All sorts of sins have multiplied between the children of Israel to the point of purification. The sin has so built up that it has tipped over into something that will be at the same time destructive and purifying. Let us hope that the rebuilding of the nation will avoid past sins.

Ezekiel 18:1-10, 13b, 30-32
1 The word of the LORD came to me: Son of man, 2 what is the meaning of this proverb that you recite in the land of Israel: “Fathers have eaten green grapes, thus their children’s teeth are on edge”? 3 As I live, says the Lord GOD, I swear that there shall no longer be anyone among you who will repeat this proverb in Israel. 4 For all lives are mine; the life of the father is like the life of the son, both are mine; only the one who sins shall die. 5 If a man is virtuous– if he does what is right and just, 6 if he does not eat on the mountains, nor raise his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel; if he does not defile his neighbor’s wife, nor have relations with a woman in her menstrual period; 7 if he oppresses no one, gives back the pledge received for a debt, commits no robbery; if he gives food to the hungry and clothes the naked; 8 if he does not lend at interest nor exact usury; if he holds off from evildoing, judges fairly between a man and his opponent; 9 if he lives by my statutes and is careful to observe my ordinances, that man is virtuous he shall surely live, says the Lord GOD. 10 But if he begets a son who is a thief, a murderer, 13 or lends at interest and exacts usury-this son certainly shall not live. Because he practiced all these abominations, he shall surely die; his death shall be his own fault. 30 Therefore I will judge you, house of Israel, each one according to his ways, says the Lord GOD. Turn and be converted from all your crimes, that they may be no cause of guilt for you. 31 Cast away from you all the crimes you have committed, and make for yourselves a new heart and a new spirit. Why should you die, O house of Israel? 32 For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone who dies, says the Lord GOD. Return and live!

P S A L M
Psalm 51:12-13, 14-15, 18-19
R: Create a clean heart in me, O God.
10 [12] A clean heart create for me, O God, and a steadfast spirit renew within me. 11 [13] Cast me not out from your presence, and your Holy Spirit take not from me. (R) 12 [14] Give me back the joy of your salvation, and a willing spirit sustain in me. 13 [15] I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners shall return to you. (R) 16 [18] For you are not pleased with sacrifices; should I offer a burnt offering, you would not accept it. 17 [19] My sacrifice, O God, is a contrite spirit; a heart contrite and humbled, O God, you will not spurn. (R)

Today we remember the life of an extraordinary witness to the power of the Gospel and faith. Maximilian Kolbe offered his life in the place of one person unjustly condemned to die in a World War II concentration camp. The man subsequently survived the war and was reunited with his wife and children. It is only with the faith of a child that such an action is possible – it is the image of a child’s absolute trust in his or her parents that Jesus refers to in the Gospel and encourages us to imitate in our own lives.

Matthew 19:13-15
13 Children were brought to Jesus that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked them, 14 but Jesus said, “Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” 15 After he placed his hands on them, he went away.

SABBATH

LOVE YOUR CHILDREN

One of the many things that bring me joy is blessing the children. No sooner have I finished Mass that I am bombarded with children asking for “mano”  (taking my hand to their foreheads as a sign of blessing). I remember this episode in the Gospel when that action takes place. This is a beautiful scene whereby Jesus takes time to be with the children, to embrace them and bless them.
It also reminds me of the experience I had in Sydney, Australia, at the 2008 World Youth Day. Our pilgrimage group was awaiting the arrival of Pope Benedict XVI at the vigil site when I happened to look up and saw the pope mobile stop along the way. The window was rolled down and the Pope reached out to a small child in the crowd. This memory has stayed with me until now. In his busy schedule, the Pope paused to bless a child. Jesus, too, in His hectic schedule, stops to bless the children. They are certainly a gift and we must show them our love and affection. One of the questions that a couple will be asked when being interviewed in their pre-wedding seminar is if they will raise children up according to the teachings of the Church. I will never forget a lecture of mine in the seminary teaching us that no one has a right to have a child — it is a gift from God. How true that is.
Psychologists tell us that the first seven years of a child are of utmost importance for their development and identity. If the child is shown much affection, care and love, they will grow up to be loving and secure persons. If a child is neglected, abused or treated terribly this can linger for the rest of their lives.
I will never have children but, in the spiritual realm, I have many children. One of my greatest joys is to give life to them and I do this by living my priesthood to the full. I was asked one day by a youth why priests are called fathers. Isn’t that what we are? Priests are to be spiritual fathers to the people entrusted to them by God. Fr. Brian Steele, MGL

Reflection Question:
In what ways are you able to bless children?

Father, I thank You that I am Your child. Bless me and give me life. Amen.

St. Fachanan, pray for us.
