THE MAN ON THE CROSS

So that the cross of Christ might not be emptied of its meaning. – 1 Corinthians 1:17

I was probably in Grade 4 on that summer break when I joined the Daily Vacation Church School (DVCS) — a Protestant Bible summer class for kids. One of my playmates was a Protestant, and his parents invited us to join the one-hour Bible study every day, assuring us that free snacks would be served after. We happily agreed.
There I noticed that the cross in their chapel was bare. The crucified Christ was missing, and the pastor explained that it was because Jesus had already ascended into heaven. Oh, that’s right, I thought, and I understood.
But in our Catholic churches, I get a different feeling up to now when I solemnly stare at the heartbreaking image of Jesus hanging on the cross, wounded and bleeding. I am reminded of the reason for His suffering and death, and I tear up at the thought that I am a part of that reason. Then, I long again to be worthy of His cross.
Does the cross that you’re carrying now burden you? Take heart. He is with you. Look at the crucified Christ and be reminded that He carried the biggest cross of all so that you may live. Nova Arias (nova.svp@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
What do you think of when you see Jesus on the cross?

Jesus, may the message of Your cross be alive in my heart every day.

SABBATH

ARE YOU READY?

I thought only the brides are traditionally late in their weddings. In the Gospel today, the groom delays his coming. In ancient Palestine, as we hear Jesus telling us, the groom could take hours to arrive. Imagine! You are the sponsor at the wedding and two hours later, you are still waiting for the groom or bride to arrive. Would you wait?
In the Gospel, Jesus narrates that there are 10 bridesmaids waiting for the coming of the groom. Some were wise; others were foolish. Why would that be the case? Perhaps the more experienced are used to waiting around. In order for themto be safe, they had extra oil in their lamps - just in case. At midnight, the groom finally arrives. Imagine rising from your sleep and not having any oil. It is late and it seems impossible to buy the extra oil. This becomes a problem because those who have come prepared are wiser. The others have to go elsewhere. What a sad occasion it turns out to be for the foolish. They are not permitted entry into the wedding feast, after all that waiting until midnight. They are foolish because they were not vigilant and prepared for the coming of the groom.
The call of the Gospel today is to stay awake. We do not know the hour or day of the arrival of the Son of God. We can be sure that He will come — but when, we are not so sure. We need the grace to be vigilant.
I remember back in the novitiate when we were often called to keep vigil with the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. Those were inspiring times if one could stay awake. However, if you were rostered in the early hours of the morning, it was a big challenge. One does not only need plenty of grace to stay awake and pray, but matchsticks as well to keep one’s eyelids open. So are you ready? Do you have lamps burning brightly for the Lord? We should always be ready to greet Him whenever He desires to come. Let us be willing and able to enter when he calls us to himself. Fr. Brian Steele, MGL

Reflection Question:
Is there oil in your lamp?

Give me the oil of Your Spirit burning every day and always, Lord. Help me to be vigilant and ready to do Your will in my life. Amen.

St. Honoratus, pray for us.
