WHO ARE YOU?

“By what authority are you doing these things? Or who gave you this authority to do them?” – Mark 11:28

We were invited to attend a prayer meeting in a chapel at a nearby village. We were around 12 attendees. Since there was still an ongoing youth choir practice, someone motioned that we just hold the prayer meeting inside the sacristy. Because we were displaced, some were pissed off until a heated discussion started. Then my husband spoke up, “We all came to attend the prayer meeting. I believe arguing won’t do us any good so maybe we could just start with what we came here for.” Then an already angry couple responded in a loud, sarcastic voice, “What are you saying? Who are you anyway? We don’t even know you!”
A nun was there and she introduced us, then invited the group for a short prayer session. Afterwards, she and the others apologized for how the couple treated us.
During Jesus’ time, people questioned His authority. In our lifetime, there will always be those who will question our identity, our service, our faith. But we can hold on to the fact that we are God’s beloved children and we can just keep moving and doing as He commands. Sol Saura (solmsaura@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
Do you know that all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to you? Go therefore and make disciples of all nations. (Matthew 28:18-19)

Lord, amidst persecutions, allow me to keep living my life for You.

COMPANION

1st READING

What does it mean “to pray in the Holy Spirit?” There are probably almost as many answers to this question as the number of people you might ask. The key is to recognize that if God is in control of our prayer lives through the Holy Spirit, we can be sure that we are not wasting our time daydreaming or wandering off on random thoughts that lead nowhere.

Jude 17, 20b-25
17 Beloved, remember the words spoken beforehand by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ. 20 Build yourselves up in your most holy faith; pray in the Holy Spirit. 21 Keep yourselves in the love of God and wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. 22 On those who waver, have mercy; 23 save others by snatching them out of the fire; on others have mercy with fear, abhorring even the outer garment stained by the flesh. 24 To the one who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you unblemished and exultant, in the presence of his glory, 25 to the only God, our savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord be glory, majesty, power, and authority from ages past, now, and for ages to come. Amen.

Psalm 63:2, 3-4, 5-6
R: My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God.
1 [2] O God, you are my God whom I seek; for you my flesh pines and my soul thirsts like the earth, parched, lifeless and without water. (R) 2 [3] Thus have I gazed toward you in the sanctuary to see your power and your glory, 3 [4] for your kindness is a greater good than life; my lips shall glorify you. (R) 4 [5] Thus will I bless you while I live; lifting up my hands, I will call upon your name. 5 [6] As with the riches of a banquet shall my soul be satisfied, and with exultant lips my mouth shall praise you. (R)

G O S P E L

Jesus confounds the chief priests and the scribes with His ability to confront their questions with one of His own. We need to trust that the Holy Spirit will give us the right words to speak when we are challenged by secular or even anti-Christian attacks. Some of the most profound statements of theology have come from the mouths of virtually illiterate saints. If God can provide them with wisdom when necessary, surely He will do the same for us.

Mark 11:27-33
26 27 Jesus and his disciples returned once more to Jerusalem. As he was walking in the temple area, the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders approached him 28 and said to him, “By what authority are you doing these things? Or who gave you this authority to do them?” 29 Jesus said to them, “I shall ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. 30 Was John’s baptism of heavenly or of human origin? Answer me.” 31 They discussed this among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘Of heavenly origin,’ he will say, ‘Then why did you not believe him?’ 32 But shall we say, ‘Of human origin’?” — they feared the crowd, for they all thought John really was a prophet. 33 So they said to Jesus in reply, “We do not know.” Then Jesus said to them, “Neither shall I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

SABBATH

COURAGE AND WISDOM

Jesus is courageous. He does not cower in fear even when threatened by death on account of His relationship with God. He stands firm and does not shudder when questioned by those who attack Him for His radical teachings about God. He perseveres in doing what is good even when the very good He does is used against Him. Jesus is courageous.
Jesus is wise. He knows what His mission is really all about. He understands the consequences of His radical teachings that clash with the lifestyle and the whole paradigm of the chief priests, the scribes, the Pharisees and the elders. He is sure with the origin of His message and the authority with which He proclaims and lives out His message. Jesus is wise.
Courage and wisdom — we need both as we strive to follow Jesus. Courage without wisdom is dangerous. It may lead us to an untimely death, to a useless death, to a senseless death. It is not dead people that Jesus needs to spread the Good News. Jesus needs people who are alive. Wisdom is required to tame us in our courage lest we die just when we are needed alive.
Wisdom without courage is useless. It may save us from untimely death but may condemn us to a senseless life. People whose lives are without meaning are detrimental to the meaning of the Good News. Jesus needs people who can give meaning to the lives of others. Courage is needed to set us on fire lest we grow cold just when we are needed hot.
“Was the baptism of John heavenly or human in origin?” Jesus asked the chief priests, the scribes and the elders who tried to trap Him. “We do not know,” was their reply. The chief priests, the scribes and the elders responded this way because they lack either courage or wisdom, or both. “Then neither shall I tell you by what authority I do these things,” with courage and wisdom Jesus ended their discussion and exposed the trap they laid for Him. Let us pray for courage and wisdom. May we be courageous in our wisdom and wise in our courage.Fr. Bobby Titco

Reflection Question:
Where is my courage and wisdom coming from? Am I really courageous and wise?

Give me wisdom, O Lord, and inflame it with courage from Your heart. Grant me courage and temper it with wisdom from Your Spirit. Amen.

St. Conon, pray for us.
