friends of god

“… I call you friends…” – John 15:15

One of the greatest joys and pride in my life is that I have great friends. Bo Sanchez, for one, often introduces me as his close friend. He may not know it, but every time he says that, it lifts me to high heavens. I even have famous and influential friends. Freddie Aguilar once greeted me on TV in one of his rare guestings. Actually, he greeted my son, his godchild. It made me mighty proud.
Former Bulacan Governor Obet Pagdanganan would always single me out even among a crowd and call me by name. It makes me stand taller.
Now imagine God as my friend — as your friend!
Wow! Allow that to sink in for a moment… God, your friend.
How that happens and how that at all is possible is simply a miracle! But it’s true. Jesus offers His personal friendship to you. A friendship that won’t only make you jump with joy and stand tall with pride.
It is also a friendship that will lead you to an everlasting life of love — starting here and now.
Only a blind fool would reject that friendship. Alvin Barcelona (alvinbarcelona@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
Talk to Jesus now. He wants to be your personal friend. Accept His friendship and start living a great, fantastic life!

Lord Jesus, thank You for calling me to be Your friend. I accept this friendship and will keep it forever. Amen.

COMPANION

1st READING

It seems that Lydia becomes quite important as a supporter of both Paul and the proclamation of the Gospel in general. Jesus had people who cared for His needs as He went about His ministry; the Church needs people who will generously support her in the work of the Gospel today if she is to be faithful to her task. We should all pray about the extent that God  wants us to put our resources at the service of the Gospel.

Acts 16:11-15
11 We set sail from Troas, making a straight run for Samothrace, and on the next day to Neapolis, 12 and from there to Philippi, a leading city in that district of Macedonia and a Roman colony. We spent some time in that city. 13 On the sabbath we went outside the city gate along the river where we thought there would be a place of prayer. We sat and spoke with the women who had gathered there. 14 One of them, a woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth, from the city of Thyatira, a worshiper of God, listened, and the Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what Paul was saying. 15 After she and her household had been baptized, she offered us an invitation, “If you consider me a believer in the Lord, come and stay at my home,” and she prevailed on us.

P S A L M

Psalm 149:1b-2, 3-4, 5-6a, 9b
R: The Lord takes delight in his people.
1 Sing to the LORD a new song of praise in the assembly of the faithful. 2 Let Israel be glad in their maker, let the children of Zion rejoice in their king. (R) 3 Let them praise his name in the festive dance, let them sing praise to him with timbrel and harp. 4 For the LORD loves his people, and he adorns the lowly with victory. (R) 5 Let the faithful exult in glory; let them sing for joy upon their couches. 6 Let the high praises of God be in their throats. 9 This is the glory of all his faithful. Alleluia. (R)

Jesus is aware that the path in front of Him is going to involve suffering; He also knows that it is going to be similar for those who choose to follow Him. He makes sure His disciples are aware of this. That there have been thousands of martyrs for the faith tells us that many have considered the price of suffering and even death a small one to pay in exchange for the gift of eternal life.

John 15:26-16:4a
26 Jesus said to his disciples: “When the Advocate comes whom I will send you from the Father, the Spirit of truth that proceeds from the Father, he will testify to me. 27 And you also testify, because you have been with me from the beginning. 16: 1 “I have told you this so that you may not fall away. 2 They will expel you from the synagogues; in fact, the hour is coming when everyone who kills you will think he is offering worship to God. 3 They will do this because they have not known either the Father or me. 4 I have told you this so that when their hour comes you may remember that I told you.”

my reflections
t h i n k : We should all pray about the extent that God wants us to put our resources at the service of the Gospel.

SABBATH

THE LAWSUIT

In the Gospel today, we hear part of Jesus’ final speech before His apostles. He promises to send them the best Lawyer, the Advocate. Those who are in trouble need lawyers, and the followers of Jesus have trouble knocking on their doors. We know that in the history of Christianity, many of our brethren were arrested, falsely accused, dragged to court, tortured and killed. Jesus says that the best Advocate He is sending His disciples will lead them through all the confusion and bewilderment unto all truth. This Advocate, this “bigtime” Lawyer is not human, but the Holy Spirit Himself, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father. Jesus says, “I still have many things to say to you but they would be too much for you now. But when the Spirit of truth comes, He will lead you to the complete truth.”
In the Gospel of John, the story of Jesus is narrated like a case in court, a lawsuit between God and a world that refuses to believe in Him. The various
characters are then presented as loyalists of either side: allies of God or friends of the world, Godly or worldly. And the case is this: Is Jesus truly the Messiah and Son of God? The first witness in God’s favour is the Word of God, Jesus Himself, the signs and works He does. The second witness is John the Baptist whom the Jews consider as God’s great prophet. And the third is the Holy Spirit and the apostles. On the side of the world, the witnesses are the Jews who refused to believe.
After Jesus’ death, His case is far from being put to rest. The lawsuit continues and is now heard not by the Sanhedrin or at Pilate’s preatorium but in the marketplace of the world. In the midst of all these, the Holy Spirit, the Advocate, the Lawyer of Jesus, calls us to stand for Jesus and testify on His behalf.
We are the modern witnesses for Jesus the Christ. The best and most convincing evidence we can present in His favour is our shining example of striving not only to live according to what Jesus taught but, most importantly, to live like Jesus Himself. Please present your evidence as exhibit A. Fr. Bobby Titco

Reflection Question:
When called to the witness stand, do I have convincing evidence in Jesus’ favor?

Jesus, thank You for empowering us with Your very Spirit. Help us to fight Your battle against the world that goes against the values of Your kingdom. With You, in You and by You, victory is sure. Amen.

St. Aurelian, pray for us.
